Comments (11)I didn't answer originally because we're still waiting for our doors to arrive from Scherr's....so I have nothing concrete to tell you about, plus I wasn't totally sure what your question was. :) Anyway, we're doing Shaker style door covers that they are painting. I can tell you that the painting is what is costing us quite a bit more - if you are using one of these companies, I'd be more likely to look at the wood doors if saving money is of prime concern. That said, I was set on a white color, but not their Extra White default color. I paid extra for custom, and I paid extra for them to paint it. I could have ordered them not painted, or painted with two coats of primer. However, I read too many stories about DIY paint eventually coming off and my family is not easy on cabinets. The extra investment is worth it to save me from yelling at them every time they touch the cabinets. What I loved about the company was that I could send them my design straight from Ikea and they set up the order - they are used to working with Ikea base cabs and were easy to deal with. One thing we didn't do is get end panels, fridge panels or the back of the peninsula panels so there are definitely some things we're doing ourselves - those bigger pieces like the fridge and peninsula panels made the shipping and cost per SF REALLY go up. I hope we're doing the right thing but as the guy at Scherr's said to me, if it doesn't work we can always order them after the fact. Again, they aren't coming for a few more weeks so I can't comment outside of the decision/ordering process. In the end, I'm not sure the cost will be *that* much cheaper than ordering from Lowe's, especially when you add in our time, but we'll save a couple of thousand....See MoreUltracraft vs. IKEA... thoughts?
Comments (15)I think that red birch door is beautiful - I love the variation in the wood. It's one of the things that makes wood beautiful to me. My maple cabinets have some variation, in pattern as well as color - maple gets this satiny/swirly thing sometimes - and I love that. This door is beautiful, and the wide shaker style is very striking. Well, you know I like wide shaker - I did mine in Kraftmaid. I think this Ultracraft door is even nicer! To me, it's a very cool, contemporary, updated style. Also, FWIW, usually when I see wide shaker, the center panel is less recessed than on a standard shaker. I think that makes it less of a dust trap. I hate when you go to a cabinet showroom and you can run your finger along the bottom edge and pick up a ton of dust... I'm not HCO (house-cleaning-obsessed), so for me, a shallower edge is better. ;-) Don't know a lot about the construction differences between Ultracraft and Ikea (or about the total cost difference), but I think you should go for the one you *like* better. You're going to be looking at these doors every day. You don't want to look at them every time and say, oh, but I really wanted the other. Oh, the reverse raised panel thing vs. veneer doors - I think there are advantages and disadvantages. Here's a quote from a message from kompy: SOLID PANEL PROS: more durable, solid feel, consistent finish CONS: You can have some 'striped effect on center panels, more $$ VENEER PANEL PROS: less money, no striped effect on center panels CONS: less durable, finish might age differently around the frame and center panel. Comments (24)So with that - the GOOD news is that there's no new door that I would have wanted instead of my April purchase. It was a little annoying that they did the sale so soon after the Spring sale - since there was only one last year - but overall good for most folks. I would have preferred to buy later - but I would have been REALLY cranky if the new door styles had one that I liked BETTER! The steel blue is a little strange - not sure they are bringing doors that reflect what's popular (or maybe I just say that because it's not what I want LOL )...See MoreUnfinished Vs Waypoint Vs Ikea Small budget help please?
Comments (56)The weird part of the layout is the bump out where our daughter's closet is, by the stove. Husband isn't keen on taking that out, so for now it would be a work around. If the one wall comes out (where the "doors" are on the top wall), it will extend that part of the kitchen back out another 3.5-4' by 11'. (the rooms are currently offset, which I couldn't figure out how to show w/the planner so I just went ahead and made it so that wall was eliminated, making the dining area larger. Otherwise it would be like this, and not have a peninsula. There's nothing else I can think that could be changed to do w/the layout and traffic, so if you guys see something, feel free to point it out! The door on the left is the basement, that can't go anywhere, and the door on the right is an open doorway that goes to the living room, so that can't go anywhere. The door on the bottom wall is the patio door to the outside....See Moreenduring
