Why Animals Do Not Touch the Compost Pile In My Backyard?

I have been doing compost in my backyard for two years. It is a great way to enrich the soil, and greatly reduce the amount of trash that my family generated.

A strange thing gradually sank into my mind, with so many animals roaming in my backyard, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, turkeys, coyotes, deers, etc. the compost pile was never bothered.

I have never seen an animal on top of the compost pile, and I have never seen any trace of scratching and scavenging.

I have all kinds of kitchen waste into the compost, anything that could increase the nutrient of the very poor soil in my backyard.

But even in the winter, when snow covers everywhere, a big pile of compost on top of snow was not touched.

Anybody knows why?
