Comments (25)Anne... I should have qualified my comments about roses with a spreading habit with "of course, it depends on the rose." because as Ralph Moore often said, "Just when you think you know the rules, the rose changes them!" I grow Green Ice in a container, but the rose does have a spreading growth habit and does just fine in a large container. The canes on the rose are very flexible and the rose makes a beautiful "weeping"plant. I have seen it planted next to a wall and instead of spreading it grew up to be a small climber. I have also seen it pruned into a small rounded shrub. So even if a rose has spreading roots, some of them are good container roses. On HMF, the rose 'Happy' appears to grow as wide as it is tall, so I am not certain that it would be considered a "spreading" plant. However, there are other variables that might make a container rose look unhappy .. no pun intended. Growing roses in containers requires very good drainage, so if your plant isn't looking good, that is one of the first things to check. In my old garden, I used to move my container grown plants to different spots in the garden to see if siting of the rose was causing the problem. Too many variables to write in one post ... lol. I added a photo I particularly like of my Green Ice just for fun. Smiles, Lyn PS ... if you click on the name of the rose, it will take you to the rose page for GI. Then click on the PHOTOS tab and you can see a few photos showing how others are growing this rose in their gardens. Comments (44)The advantage of LED's. light shines in one direction so if all the led's are pointed in a narow range forward, then most of the light will hit your trees. The life expectancy of the LED bulbs are 50,000 hours but the electronics in it probably won't exceed much over 6000 hr. You and I loose. The multi color lights is largely a gimmick. Single color bulbs are less efficient than all spectrum bulb. So lets put all the diodes in all spectrum instead of having a group of one color combined with a group of other individual colors. Citrus trees are slower in winter because of many reason with one being less light. trees are genetically coded to sow down to day length, decreasing solar angle, light wavelength shifts as the solar angle changes through out are seasons. BR40 CFL - 23 Watt - 120W Equal - 6500K Full Spectrum Daylight this is the best bulb for your trees and will look good in you living area. check out this company's link and check out Home depot or other for equivelent. If you value time and don't mind reasonable sipping cost than just get the above. Home depot may have a 6 pack going for much less. They may not. Kroger's will rip you off on these. No rush you have 5+ months left....See MoreWhat's your favorite quote about cooking?
Comments (47)I don't remember where I saw this one, but it struck me as so funny. I was thinking about putting in in a corner near the floor in small script letters...... Very stupid to kill the only servant in the house. Now we don't even know where to find the marmalade. -Agatha Christie...See More"Repotting" container citrus into ground
Comments (62)Lets get back on topic then, Mksmith wrote this: Pip even the PDF you linked eludes to that. The bathtub effect is when you dig a hole, put the plant in it and backfill with something OTHER than what you dug out. Infact unless i missed it that PDF says nothing about removing all the soil around the roots prior to planting. Putting a plant already potted in 5-1-1 in the ground with the 5-1-1 still there is putting a plant in and backfilling with something OTHER than what you dug out. Now in this case backfilling only refers to the containers volume. Normal potted plants don't hold the amount of air 5-1-1 does. Once put in the dirt that air space can become water space. Not an issue for dense potting soils. So a 5 gal potted plant would have a 5 gal bathtub effect. Not a good thing but not a huge deal. Once you get to 15 gal potted plants id be worried....See Morejosephines167 z5 ON Canada
