Versigny Rose

Hello,

I'm awaiting the arrival of my spring order which includes the Generosa rose, Versigny. Can anyone tell me about your experience with this rose? I'd love to know if it performs best in full or part sun and what kind of growth habit it has. Is it very fragrant in your garden?

I have another Generosa, Martine Guillot, new to me last year, and I like it a lot. The descriptions I read say that Martine Guillot is a shrub that is susceptible to black spot, but so far that is not my experience. That's why I'd like to hear from you.

I've had Versigny for 3 or 4 years now and it's one of my top 10 or 20 roses. I just love the intense colors, and it has been reliably winter hardy for me in zone 5, though not entirely cane hardy. The foliage stays pretty clean from blackspot, and it stays a fairly tidy bush. The rebloom isn't too great, but I have mine in filtered sun under some limbed-up pine trees, so that may contribute to it. Like most roses, it prefers full sun but has tolerated light shade OK. I don't have much of a nose for fragrance, and I haven't noticed any particular fragrance from Versigny. Still, this depth of colors is stunning, and I am growing quite fond of the Massad Generosa roses in general.

The Oranges I had bloomed ok...Livin Easy was a bloom machine from the get go without any fertilizer used... But I'll try potassium for better health... Only location I have that gets the least sun is out front. That location gets sun from sunrise until 2pm... Other location in the back closest to house gets sun from noonish until sunset... Farther out into backyard some locations gets sun from early morning until 5-6pm other locations early morning sun until dusk.. No trees around our yard or house... Sheila, I noticed your photo above, I always enjoy your rose photos with the house in the background with the tile roof and the grasses in front and the beautiful mature tree in the background. I grow 5 plants of Abe Darby; they were beautiful in the spring, but are now struggling with a rust outbreak. Some years AD escapes rust, but not this one. Another Austin rose to consider to replace AD, is another Austin rose, Queen Nefertiti. The color range of the flowers is similar to that of AD; the disease resistance is better; and the plant has a better growth habit. It is an older one that has been discontinued by DAR, but you can get one from hummingbirdroses.com .

I grew Versigny twice in my zone 5a. The most it can survive is 3 winters, and Cynthia (Nippstress in zone 5, loamy Nebraska) grew Versigny several times and it didn't last long for her either. Vesigny didn't last long for Floweraremusic (zone 5 WA alkaline clay). Paul Bocuse is more vigorous than Versigny for Floweraremusic in her dense clay & drier climate. Was it worth it after it died twice in my zone 5a? Yes, Versigny has the BEST FRUITY scent ever among my 150+ fragrant roses. When I grew it in my alkaline clay back in 2013, the scent is pure heaven: delicious apricot pie and delightful floral, better than Evelyn. Later on My 2nd Versigny near the rain-spout with more acidic clay: that lessened its fruity scent. The only 3 scents that made me exclaimed: "WOW !! this is heaven" are Versigny, Mirandy, and Yolande d'Aargon. Versigny is orange in my black-gumbo and dense clay, rather than peachy-pink: I also have Augusta Luis (less petals) and blooms smell moderate fruity (like a ripe nectarine). Versigny smells far better than Augusta Luis and I prefer Versigny scent over Evelyn and Jude the Obscure. Versigny scent is like inhaling apricot nectar, eating a delicious apricot pie, and being in heaven with roses.

ARRGGGH! Houzz and their photos! I have tried for 15 minutes to upload a photo of Versigny, but the photo button won't work, the Houzz photo upload won't work, cut and paste looked like it worked but didn't upload, and drag and drop does nothing.

HOUZZ - Tamara - what's up? The photo system used to work fine but now it isn't, at least in Safari.
