Table Grapes for the Southeast

It seems that most of my table grapes have not survived so I am looking for cultivars that do better here in central NC where Pierce's disease is a problem. So far I have planted Himrod, Mars, Candace, Fredonia, Suffolk and Lakemont. All of them were at least two years old and most of them died last year after a cold wet winter except the Fredonia and Lakemont. All the local experts claim that Pierce's disease killed them even though I never saw any evidence of it on their leaves and they looked fine before winter got here. We have now had two winters in a row with periods of single digit temps at night and daytime highs below 32 degrees - this is not a normal winter for us.

Digging around online I see few varieties available with Pierce's disease resistance and even fewer sources to buy them from. Does anybody have any experience growing resistant varieties? and where did you get your plants?

Muscadines are resistant or immune.

I just ordered some victoria red. It's not supposed to get pierce disease. I ordered from double A vineyards

You should be pruning in late winter and you must leave some of last years wood in order to get fruit. If you prune off all of last years wood, you will get nothing. You can tell the difference between one yr and older wood by the color of the bark.

I don't like Cherry tomatoes. (Ducks as rotten tomatoes come flying at me LOL). I like grape tomatoes because they are sweet, but still have the tomatoey flavor I'm looking for. I've never met a cherry I liked. I think I also don't like the shape of cherrys for my salad. But I hear very good things about Black Cherry, so I'm going to try that this year. Still, I want a grape tomato as I like them for my salads. The 3 I mentioned are what I already have seed for. I don't think I want to go to the trouble and expense of paying $5(with shipping) just to get seeds for a grape tomato.I checked the exchanges section and unfortunately no one was offering any fabulous grape tomato seeds, so these are my options. By the way, has anyone ever tried sweet pea curant? It sounds so flavorful.... and cute too.

Victoria Red is the only non-muscadine table grape that is resistant to Pierces Disease. This is one of the main diseases for table grapes in the southeast. It is seeded and usually has one or two seeds per grape. It also has a loose cluster that helps with preventing rot. You will still have to spray but it will not be as bad as tight clusters. All other table grapes will be short lived due to pierces disease. If you like muscadines there are several varieties that would do well.

I've grown all those except Diamond Muscat. Have grown Summer Muscat and it has great flavor but small berries that crack for me. I'd like to try the Diamond as I've heard it's good. If you haven't tried a Muscat throw one of these in. If you can spray some, mainly for powdery mildew, I'd recommend Flame, red, Summer Royal, black, and Princess, green. I'm eating Princess right now and it's amazingly sweet. Summer Royal is the best tasting and makes superb raisins. If you don't want to spray go with the hardy more disease resistant seedless like Faith, Hope, Joy, Gratitude, Glenora, etc

I plan on getting a Victoria Red (even though one guys blog showed them heavily infected with PD). I was also looking for Conquistador but have had no luck finding a source. Hey, I just noticed your handle jvsand5! How's all the tropicals doing? I need another Luc's Garcinia if you will part with one and I'm looking for anyone stateside with Eleagnus latifolia or So Shang. I have ordered cuttings from Oscar but none of them rooted and I have seeds coming from Luc but I think they are held up on the border since it has been almost a month.

garymc - I have another section of the yard devoted to Muscadines so that area is full. And I have some wild grapes (Possum grapes? whatever they call the little tiny dark ones) rooting and they seem immune to Pierce's Disease.

I actually just ordered So Shang seeds from Oscar. Haven't sprouted yet though.

I was also trying to get conquistador but have had no luck finding them. I'm also looking for orlando seedless if you ever happen to come across that one. I have a Tari's burgundy bunch that grows well. It's pretty decent tasting.

Sucks to hear about the victoria red and pierce disease. Hope they survive down here.

I don't have any extra of the garcinia anymore. I just have 2 in the ground.
