Comments (46)We're in kind of a gray area, Ellen. Your plant should be hardy there w/o protection if it slides into a normal dormancy, but temperature can trump the primary trigger for dormancy, which is lengthening of the dark period. The question in my mind is, will the plant go dormant if you expose it to cold but not freezing temperatures for a week or two, then put it outside, or has the onset of growth eliminated the plant's ability to withstand freezing temperatures. I tried to reach a friend who is the president of the MI Nurserymen's Assn, but couldn't get him. I did call another nursery and asked to speak with someone about a technical issue regarding plant physiology. She sounded sure of herself, but wasn't convincing, even though what we decided as best was what I suggested in my preceding post - keep it as cold as possible but don't let it freeze - safe side advice. I spend quite a bit of time working with the folks at a local botanic garden, but I'm not sure that the expertise of the arborist or horticulturists covers something like this, but I'll let you know if I come up with something more definitive. Comments (2)Thanks Kate. I wish I can find the receipt, such an airhead. Oh, well it was only £4. Hate garden centers that don't take care of their plants. of course it was also my fault for not looking closely enough. I am keeping it for now, and see if it recovers, I did the whole spraying with dilute bleach and sprinkle with cinnamon dance.... maybe it will help. Definitely not putting in the ground for now. Wish I am living in sunny north cal again. :)...See MoreTo Water or Not to Water Newly Planted Tubers
Comments (3)Hi Christy: I know others will chip in with advice about watering - I personally water the soil on top very lightly if a new tuber - but most experts say you shouldn't or don't need to until they are at least 6 inches grown. What I will comment on is that you are about to enter the wacky world of dahlias - where sometimes up is down and vice-versa. IMO, dahlias have a mind of their own. I take notes every year and last year my notes say my 'B-Man lookalike' (don't know the real name) gave me a first bloom in late June. This year, it has already bloomed in early May. Most growers will tell you that early bloomers will bloom within 90 days, regular dahlias 105 and late bloomers 120 days. I have rarely found that to be true. Too many variables - amount of sun, how much you did or didn't water them, how good the soil is, whether snails get their feed bags on and destroy the tender shoots, whether you fertilize them and how often, etc, etc. Overall however, the 90-120 rule is close enough. I love my dahlias but they are fickle. Best thing is to just do the best you can getting them going and then they pretty much do whatever they want from there on. Of course I leave my in ground year round so I don't go thru the digging, storing and re-potting every year. Good luck....See MoreRedSun (Zone 6, NJ)
