I have about 20 large, commercial ozone generators which I use in a number of different restoration situations and this isnÂt one of them. Yes I have tried ozone on cat urine and it doesnÂt work. The ozone will clean the surface air and make everything smell nice for a week or two but that nasty cat smell is coming back. Cat urine is super strong and in its dry state its non-soluble salt crystals. These crystals set into most hard surfaces including tile so you can imagine how these crystals embed into carpet, padding and wood subfloor. When humidity hits these crystals, that nasty cat odor comes right back. These salt crystals are resistant to bleach and just about the strongest cleaners. Cat urine can cause thousands of dollars in damage and thereÂs only one way to solve the problem from my experience. Remove all the effected carpet and pad, which is usually the entire house if the cats have been allowed access. Sand down all areas of the subfloor with an orbital screen so a sealer can be applied to a clean and dry surface. Then apply two good coats of B-I-N Primer by Zinsser. Then relay new carpet after the primer has been allowed to dry and off gas for at least a few days but I prefer a week. Warnings: B-I-N Primer is nasty. Make sure you ventilate the area real well and wear the proper respirator. If not your head will be spinning and possibly sick to your stomach from breathing it. Ozone also occurs in nature such as during a lightning storm. Ozone however is not a friendly gas and care should be taken with true ozone generators. Ozone dissipates rather quickly but in concentrations it will kill plants and pets and can ruin rubber products in the home. You shouldnÂt be in the home breathing ozone.

If so, no need for me to ever go hunting and pecking all over the internet when I have a question/problem with any of my fur and feathered babes....I'll just come directly here! Cynthia, Ok, about the Lime...do you mean actual citrus lime? As in, juice? If so, then I'm in business as my neighbor has a lime tree and the limes are always dropping all over her yard and mine because she doesn't do anything with them. If not the citrus lime, what kind do you mean? Joepyeweed, Does Simple Solution have a decent scent? Normally I wouldn't care as long as I could get the old urine smell out of the area but since it's a place to relax I don't want another nasty scent added to the mix. Although, it can't be near as bad as some of the solutions I've tried already. lol Does Simple Solutions come in a concentrate so that I can mix up a garden pump sprayer of it for the week? I'll tell ya both...I had nooo idea old, dried dog urine could smell so bad when it's been dampened with hose water. My gosh, it was infiltrating into the house a whole double garage space away from it. You are both great for taking the time to read my question and respond, and so fast. Thank you both!

Sophie, I had someone replace the rubbery seal (weatherstripping) around the door, but that didn't seem to help. I am going to see what other types they sell. I react to all sorts of things. Perfume smells, fresh cut wood smell, fresh cut grass smells, the smell of people's deodorants, hairspray, laundry detergents.....all sorts of things. My lungs are hypersensitive, plus I get headaches and allergy symptoms, too.

Oakley, I’m glad you got your big dog odor taken care of. When I was reading your notes I thought that maybe you had retrievers. I used to have a lab and they and other working dogs of the retriever variety are likely to smell a bit doggy because of the oil in their coat. Yes it is important to keep up with vacuuming because they shed a lot. You’ll also want to keep your vacuum cleaner emptied because the oily doggy smell can make that reek Recirculate doggy odor, even if you have replaceable bags. The filter was some part of the apparatus gets dusty with dog fragrance. (We have an in-house vac, so the canister is in the garage, so not a problem.) If you have wool or similar fiber carpeting, this can become “doggy” because the oil from the retrievers get onto the fibers. We had friends with golden retrievers and they had large sisal carpets and their home did not smell of their dogs. They were good housekeepers but not fastidious. They were dog lovers and the guy was a duck hunter so his dogs were not roomed often. (With retriever, the oil on their skin that gets into their hair helps keep them warm and buoyant, I believe.) One thing I found that’s a nice fragrance is close. Somehow to scape day project and we’re apparently in my sewing room. It took me a while to figure out where the nice thing clothes smell was coming from until I spotted a few loose clothes. Now I replace them every now and then just a few and it gives a light variable fragrance To that room. As others have suggested, and you said you do this, refresh the air as often as possible by opening the doors and windows and letting a lot of sunlight come in. Be thankful your pups are rolling in rotted seaweed or lobster bait. Your dogs are beautiful!
