Semi-OT: Birthday Celebration And More

Hi everyone,

Lots of things going on right now (mostly good :) ), and I just wanted to share some food and non-food related news:

My 25th birthday is next Friday! Yesterday, dad and I ate at Red Lobster as part of an early celebration (I also found some materials I need for this year's Halloween costume).

This weekend's workday, I will be making these Cheesy Olive Appetizers (for the first time) to take along (it's mayo, black olives, Cheddar cheese, and chopped onions mixed together, then spread over quartered English muffins and baked until the cheese melts). Last week's workday, I made Broccoli Salad and Orange Lemonade. This weekend's beverage will be some Mint Iced Tea.

Tomorrow's the first day of spring! Yet, Mother Nature's going to give us some snow :/. Luckily, the following days will be warmer.

Happy early birthday, Brad! So what did you have at Red Lobster?

That Cheesy Olive Appetizer sounds a lot like a Pioneer Woman recipe for cheese bread that my oldest daughter loves, but without the onions. If so, I think it will be very well received.

Spring here too, but no snow, thank goodness. I need to get my seeds started, plant some rhubarb and walk the fence to see what needs repair, my animals are begging to get out of the barnyard!

I had my usual: Snow Crab Legs with Walt's Favorite Shrimp (that's their battered and fried shrimp), French Fries, Caesar Salad, and Lemonade. Oh, and one Cheddar Bay Biscuit. No dessert, since I was extremely satisfied with what I had to eat lol.

I do love The Pioneer Woman and have all of her cookbooks and watch her on Food Network with mum. It reminded me of her recipe, too.

I've been Winter Sowing seeds for the past 4 or 5 years and it's always a success (only a few don't sprout for me usually). I peeked in some of the containers today and I see one or two seeds just beginning to germinate. Luckily, I only have a few annuals planted and they haven't even sprouted yet.

Dacaf coffee? Really, Josh? ;-) I don't know... I guess I just always go for the gusto, or something... I couldn't drink decaf coffee, drink a light beer, eat an item because it was low fat, or smoke a light cigarette! If I'm going to go, I'm going to go all out!! :-) I want to really taste my food and/or beverage... and not necessarily consume it just because it's better for me! And before you say anything... ya, I know... smoking isn't good for me, either! It's the last bad habit I have, and I don't do it THAT much! I'm working on it... ;-) Chicken wings are for people who really like to work at eating... they must be, because I can't for the life of me think why else anyone would want to eat the one part of a chicken that hardly contains any meat! I like skin on, bone in chicken drumsticks and thighs, and I like them either marinated and grilled, or breaded and fried, or baked as a whole bird surrounded with vegetables! Seafood and fish are awesome... as long as they're fully cooked! I can't abide the thought that parasite eggs might lie dormant within the flesh... but that's where they might be. Fish and pigs are notorious for carrying parasites. I'd go for the cooked Japanese fish and seafood, but not the raw. Dealing with dogs so much has made me very aware of parasites. I once wrote an article for a breed specific magazine on parasites... the research I did was very eye-opening. And, yes... there are some kinds of worms that humans can get, only one of which is the tapeworm. Fish also contains a little more than trace amounts of mercury and other chemicals, thanks to industrial dumping. It seems to accumulate more in the belly fat of large fish, so be sure to trim all that off when preparing it. In other news... we got some crazy weather last night! We got hit with an ice storm, sort of. It rained or snowed a couple of inches of tiny balls of ice. It was like walking on sand. It was the strangest weather I think I've ever seen! The roads are sheets of ice with a covering of ice balls! It's very slick out there... anyone traveling in it should be very careful! Charades sounds like fun, Al! I haven't played cards or any games in a long time... not since the kids were younger. We're kind of isolated down here... all of our friends live up north. And you guys are scattered all over the country! Funny thing, though... last night, we were talking about a bulb type I want to get, and Old Guy says, "you should get a bunch and send some to your friends... they're always sending you stuff", and I said, "I should... I've got really generous friends, don't I?" And he said, "yes, they certainly are good friends!" So, there you have it... I, too, wish we all lived closer to each other. Can you imagine the fun we'd have together?! Can you imagine all we'd learn together, and what we could accomplish?!! :-) And speaking of bulbs and sending things, I will have care packages for some of you when the weather breaks. Anyway... not much on the agenda today... except hauling more water and chipping ice out of water buckets and horse troughs and poultry pans! I wish the ducks didn't have to bathe so often in winter, but it's what keeps their feathers in good condition, I think. They're incredibly messy! If I can't locate the Day Glo mantis pictures, Mike, I'll be sure to take a new batch next autumn. I noticed several new areas of the gardens that contain egg cases, so we should have quite a nice population this year! Well... it's about that time again... time to make the donuts. Chores call. Jojo, Josh, Mike and Jodik.. I am speechless and wanted to thank you so much for your warm wishes and affections! You are all very important to me as you know and it is such an honor to have met and gotten to know all of you! My life would be very bland without you in it. Many hugs and handshakes to my TRUE friends! Time to leave work and reflect on what I have done all year at the gym. I have been told to go out and just party, but my body is telling me to hit the racks.. I wish I had the money to fly away to some tropical destination as I always did, but this year I have to save money for my greenhouse and the next heating season.:-( Much affection for you all! Semi-OT: educational sources on kitchens and homes

That's a great website. Waterdamage, I don't have a good foundation of period styles or architectural detailing in my knowledge base, either. The Design Around This threads have made me realize how little attention I have paid to these things, over the years. When I'm considering jumping into a new Design Around This thread, I generally hit Google, before anyone posts anything, looking for any articles I can find to explain the basics. I also use Google Images for visual clues. Slowly I start to build up a fuzzy understanding of some of the most common elements. I won't be as conversant with these elements as others who have been aware of them for years, but it's enough to let me squeak in the door. If a theme is Country French (which I know nothing about) I'll start by googling Country French. That leads to multiple mentions of Provence, so I read about that. Provence is known for beautiful lavender fields, so I read about that. Then I'll Google French art, Provencal art, French iron, antique French, French reproduction furniture, and so forth. Country French colors, rustic tiles, French pottery. I go back and forth between Google proper and Google Images (but Images helps me more.) If I occasionally throw in the word "kitchen" (French kitchen, rustic Provence kitchen, etc) it pulls me back to kitchen interiors, with new visuals of how others have interpreted the theme in their own homes. The above sounds like work but it's not, just relaxed wandering around and letting searches take me where they will. Then, when people post their boards, it makes a lot more sense to me, and each board teaches me new things. By the end of the thread, I think I have a new (although admittedly not deep!) understanding of the period or style. A start, anyway, that I can build on. This is not a very elegant answer to your good question, but that's how I deal with my own inadequacies in this area!

Thank you, everyone!

The big day isn't until next Friday, but I am really looking forward to it! The snow's still lingering around, but it was melting earlier. I think by tomorrow, it should be pretty much gone since it's supposed to get about 50 degrees or so.

Iced tea and appetizers are made for tomorrow's workday. Tonight, we had Domino's for supper and was it ever good!

25 years old? Man! that's old!

100 years ago, 25 was considered middle aged.

Watch out for midlife crisis. LOL!

dcarch, LOL! I would've been old and not considered marriage material 100 years ago. I know unmarried women were called "spinsters". I don't think there was such a word for a man who was unmarried and middle aged. "Bachelor" is the only word that comes to mind.

Doing a lot of reflecting and contemplating lately. I have a lot to look forward to in this life and I hope I'm here for a long, long time.

When dad and I went out to eat the other day and I was doing some shopping, I found an early birthday present for my mum: a copy of the 1965 Cinderella (Rogers and Hammerstein's) with Lesley Ann Warren, Stuart Damon, Ginger Rogers, Walter Pigeon, Celeste Holm, etc., on DVD. She even cried a little when I showed it to her. It's my favorite live-action version of it and first saw it on The Disney Channel when I was a kid back in the 90's. I do love the songs (10 Minutes Ago, The Prince Is Giving A Ball, and others).

This is the Cinderella (from 1954) that I grew up with, and perhaps your mother is familiar with this book as well. Note that on the last page shown here they are "dining" without food! As a child, I thought that Cinderella's gold dress was the most beautiful dress I had ever seen. I have never seen the live-action version, but now I am intrigued.

I'm going to start sowing seeds myself as well, but I had to wait until we got back from vacation, as I was afraid young plants would die from heat and lack of water while we were away the past ten days. I grow herbs and chilies in pots (due to poor soil in my back yard), and some of the chili plants survived while I was gone, but a couple of them dried up. I might need to figure out a way to put them on a drip watering system, as the sprinklers do not reach them.

What are you going to grow? I do not grow as much as I used to, but I still plant chilies, basil, and cilantro every years, and sometimes parsley, tomatoes, and dill. Recently I discovered Gourmet Garden herbs in a tube, and I bought dill, lemon grass, and cilantro, to use for emergencies. I have lemon grass in my yard, and it is a perennial, but the lemon grass in a tube is easier to use, and I do not have to remove tough lemon grass stems.

Hope you have a great birthday next week - my brother turned 50 this week while we were in Costa Rica, and so you are just about half his age (at this time). Nice to have a birthday at the beginning of spring!

Lars, that is a beautifully illustrated book! I love her dress, also! There are several live-action adaptations of Cinderella, but this is one of the more famous ones (it was adapted 3 times for television), and now Disney has released their live-action remake (I LOVE her dress in that, too; I've only seen the trailers for it).

I usually sow flowers, but I've also done herbs. This year, I'm even trying magnolias (an unknown white variety from a fellow online gardener's garden) and lilacs (it's a species called Late Lilac) from seed. We just usually buy our veggie plants (tomatoes and cukes). Not sure if we'll be growing veggies this year, though. They didn't do too well last summer.

Happy Birthday to your brother! Costa Rica sounds nice. I love having an early spring birthday. Everything starts to come alive again :).
