It's the clipped lollypop standards that just don't seem right in the application here. I think they'd be be more effective as focal points to design garden beds around somewhere other than in the front yard - like one would design gardens around a fountain, statue or other garden art. How do you feel about low maintenance succulents between the walk and porch; one of the grasses as an accent? Something I'd love, but can't have much in the way of in my climate. As for additional shrubs under the window like a row of boxwood - that might get to look ordinary and tiresome, especially if mercilessly sheared. There are always two schools of thought regarding foundation planting on this forum - some like it, some don't. I have the "usual" foundation plantings, mirror image arborvitae, mugos, and yews. My house is a center hall colonial so that arrangement worked. It's lived far beyond its usefulness now - 40 years and I can no longer keep it in check, so it'll be ripped out and I'll have to face the replacement dilemma myself.

Basic tip: Use your entire canvas as your design space; that is, all the space from the house to the property line. That doesn't mean you need to fill it, but USE it as part of the design. There is a tendency, when looking at a flat photo, to do flat design, as in flat against the house, usually with disappointing results. Three-dimensional design doesn't come naturally to everyone, but it helps to look out your windows to imagine how you'd like to frame your views, or where you would like to focus your views from inside the house. You will get more replies by adding a few more photos from different angles, some further out and some closer in.

First off, I was going by the numbering at the top (16 of 44, for instance) and didn't see the numbering at the bottom until now, so several of you labels are off. Sorry. The numbers I've used below are your labels. :) 2 could be strawberry or mock strawberry, or maybe something else 4 is a weed 5, 34, 36 and 41 could be Echinacea or Rudbeckia, or something else 7 might be a milkweed, snip a bit of leaf and see if has milky sap 15 could be Jupiter's Beard, Centranthus ruber, it will have salmon pink flowers very soon if it is 17 could be Valerian or Peony, or something else 18 is extremely cool and I would love to know what it is, I hope someone will recognize it! 19 could be Moonbeam Coreopsis 20 might be Hydrangea 23 is a grass that has volunteered in the middle of your lily of the valley 24 looks like Goldenrod, Solidago, to me 25 is a weed 26 and 35 might be Veronica 27 and 28 might be weedy honeysuckle, Lonicera 38 could be a Centaurea montana seedling 40 could be Rudbeckia (a different kind than the others), Plantain (a weed), or something else 42 the plant in front is a Hosta, the ones behind could be Dame's Rocket 45 could be Dame's Rocket
