I think under-potting is usually a good idea with any succulent. I didn't have any idea what a 'paddle plant' was so I googled it, and what I read was it takes medium light--hmm, and I put mine in full sun in the summer!) and that its leaf edges are red when it gets enough light and all-green when it doesn't, so you could check that way to see if it's getting enough light. It also says to water very sparingly in winter. Used to be we used soil and sand, but then they came out with perlite, which is much better for lightening potting mix. Also soil is very different in different parts of the country, and I don't know about yours, but mine is Totally unsuitable for potting. You could probably just buy a bag of cactus/succulent mix. Possibly should wait a couple weeks or more for bare glimmerings of spring to re-pot, and in the meantime maybe stop watering it at all.

I'm a bit late to this thread. We lived for years in the TX hill country and had large numbers of whitetail and axis deer roaming our patios nightly. I kept a pot of Kalanchoe luciae outdoors all summer, and occasionally I'd find a nice round deer bite in one of the paddles, but it never was a big favorite with them. The occasional deer bites sure do show up on the big round leaves, however, so you have to have a sense of humor about the resulting look. That was nothing compared to the complete destruction of many other plants, though, so I didn't mind the occasional chomp mark. My hat is off to anyone who gardens in areas with large deer populations (or equally challenging rabbits!) It's not easy! Best of luck to you.

Give them plenty of morning sun more gradually, fertilize lightly, and watch the watering, the yellow one is a hybrid, and by the leaf color I would say had plenty of fertililzer. Pinch off the flowers down to the next set of leaves to keep it in flower, like you prune a rose, or pansies to keep them in flower, it may like some cooler and partial shade, not in a western exposure, in partial shade to keep it alive and well, where you live it may be able to tolerate the heat. The nurseries make them flower artifically.Norma

Old post resurfaces! Whee! First, I'll say Beautiful pix of your plants, Mara! As far a Kalanchoe luciae 'Fantastic', the only pic of that so far is the one Succulent120 posted. I bought one the other day at the C&S show: Can't wait till it grows up! I believe the 1st pic, posted by the OP is Kalanchoe luciae. See link (way) below to a very good explanation of differences between it & Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, including pix of their flowers...the best way to tell apart! And for the question about curved leaves, it just depends on the conditions in which the plant grows.
