Give it to me straight Will this flowering pear seedling self destruct

This is the flowering pear tree that i took cuttings from. It is a seedling(not named cultivar) growing along the highway. Do you think the branching on this it ok? It is similiar to the bradford but all the branches are not growing from the same point. Im kind of worried about it falling apart later on in life but on the same note, there are other flowering pears that are growing around my town and they are large and have not broken. I'm pretty sure they were not named cultivars aswell. And then of course there are dozens of bradfords that were planted that are all broke up and missing branches but the city does not cut them down. Surely the callery species as a whole is not prone to breakage. So maybe i will have several decades to enjoy this tree?

The angle on the branches really looks pretty decent. better than the Bradfords and Clevelands. The wood is still likely brittle. Unfortunately I predict a longer life for it than the average Bradford. Maybe its flowers won't smell. Unfortunately if it popped up along the roadway then you may be in a zone where they are considered invasive. What does your DNR say about releasing them?

In the spring of 2012, I attempted to graft a Pear scion onto my apple tree using Winter Banana Apple as an inter stem. (All of he grafting i do is "Whip and Tongue" grafts wrapped in grafting tape. I then coat the wrapped union with grafting wax) The parent branch was a Winesap Apple branch with a grafted Winter Banana Apple scion from a few years before. (I actually have two of these paired branches.) I then attempted to graft two "Kieffer" Pear scions onto my two Winter Banana Apple inter stems. The "Kieffer" Pear scions started to grow, but died a few weeks later. This spring (2014) I attempted to graft this Apple / Pear union again using the same Winter Banana Apple inter stems. I had just enough branch on my Winter Banana branches to try this experiment one more time. This time around, I used "Sunrise Pear" scionwood. The grafting was a screaming success! (I had enough "Sunrise Pear" scionwood to graft two branches onto my apple tree, and two more onto an ornamental pear. All four pear grafts were a success!) I have no idea why this experiment failed in 2012 and was a success in 2014. I do not know if it had to do with the pear variety used, or if it had to do with environmental circumstances. I will re-post in 2015 with an update. There are a few different treads on this subject so I will be re-posting on those threats also. Below are pictures taken on 07/27/2014.

It was impossible to hit "Like" after reading your post, Campanula. Hearing about Mr. Campanula's situation did put the gardens in perspective. "Let the woods be woods" is sane advice. I often think that if my dh & I were so lucky as to be able to travel around the world for a year seeing all the sites and gardens I've always longed to see and if there were no one here to water, prune, weed, etc., we would return to woods.... especially considering the way tulip and maple tree seedings take hold in the yard. There's much truth in mxk3's post. A little spark does help us bounce back. Like all of you who have battled droughts and water rationing, this year's garden has become survival of the fittest. I don't expect much from my roses until the fall. And so I've also begun thinking about bulbs and looking again at my John Scheepers and Van Engelen catalogues. Campanula, your mention of T. humilis alba coerulea oculata made me smile. I've circled that one, too! I think its brilliant whiteness will sparkle in the gardens. And that blue center is luscious.

Sandy - Though I now live in NC, I am originally from OK (central) so I know your region well. There are most likely wild pawpaws in your area. They range in damp woodlands all the way to Canada so there is no reason you wouldn't have them. My garden is also large and I went crazy planting and propagating more pawpaws and there is a downside to having a large collection of pawpaw trees - all the fruit is ripe at the same time. You will struggle to eat, freeze, or give away multiple wheelbarrow loads of fruit each day for weeks in late August. I have found that if you have one non relative planted in the same row or very close to a row or cluster of named varieties you will get good pollination. My favorite is 'Sunflower' so I now have a row of them with one no-name seedling as a pollinator. My trees bloom most often in mid February when we have a spell of warm weather. I dump garden debris and leaves at the base of the trees and there are always small flies buzzing around mid winter when it is above freezing. Those flies do the pollinating for me.

HJ pollinating insects cover miles a day in their foraging so there will almost certainly be other pears within flying distance. Birds who eat the fruit also cover quite a distance and they will excrete the seeds far from your yard. You really can't tell if your tree has offspring in the surrounding area. They could be several miles away. GG it's true Calleries haven't been planted here for more than a few decades. It used to be mostly cherries and crabs but pears are widespread now. There're several on the green at the end of my road. I'm out in the countryside quite a bit but haven't seen any seedlings yet. I'll keep an eye open. I do think it's probably summer heat rather than summer moisture that is the requirement for seeding around. Last summer we had a long hot dry spell and there are seedpods on my Hibiscus syriacus for the first time ever. Maybe with climate change Calleries will start seeding soon?

Because it is so beautiful. And yes, I believe the callery pear is invasive in Arkansas, but they are growing in fields were the native trees were chopped down years ago.

If it's your field, you could always cut them at ground level and apply herbicide (glyphosate, triclopyr, etc) to the freshly cut stump. If it's not your field, you could check with the owner and they'd probably be happy for you to do it for them.

The op thinks the pear tree is beautiful and does not want to kill it.

We drove down to Wilmington yesterday, and the interchanges were beautiful with clouds of white pear trees that the NC HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT HAD PLANTED.

They have not yet started to bloom in our neighborhood, but I am looking forward to having the beautiful tree in bloom.

You don't have to own one to enjoy the blooms....especially if they are everywhere and invasive. I'd feel guilty having one and that would lessen the enjoyment. I guess one more tree wouldn't change things much, but I'd still feel bad having one. I like to be a responsible gardener.

There are all kinds of little things we do in rebellion against the state. I am sure I have improperly disposed of old batteries. Guess we are all rebels of some kind. Not like its ok but as long as you read the phamphlet saying not to do it and go look in the mirror and say "ha ha, yes I am". Folks here used to smuggle in dirty coal after it was banned for home heating.

I googled Bradford Pear invasive Arkansas and came up with a quite a few links. some of the state tyoe ones wanted me to download a PDF. This was a edu one that did not.

Regardless they have something or other set up where they ask us to report sitings of wild Bradfords (and kudzu etc) so the state can go eradicate them.

Hmm, I just eradicated a flowering size (20 foot) tree from my backyard with a chainsaw. It was in a fencerow and obviously a seedling. One more bites the dust...it's small compared to how many are out there...but still something.
