Time to give up on my onions?
Comments (3)Thanks for that. Last year was my first with the vege garden and I'm figuring things out all the time- The onions were in the corner of my vegetable garden that gets the least sun - and probably also has poorest soil in the whole garden. It's very light and thin compared to the dark and heavier soil in the other beds. Also no worms in the planter box. It grew really good tomatoes and the nasturtiums are very happy in there. I'd planted the onions there so I could 'forget' about them till they were ready- it being the quiet back corner of the planter box where not much ever seemed to grow.... I've pulled them up and put some flowers (echiums, nasturtiums and borage)in instead -along with quite a lot of compost in an attempt to improve the soil. I was working on the theory that if the plant centre sold the seedlings then it was a good time to grow them. I have recently found the actual seeds for the same onion variety and they suggest planting in September for harvest in around March (the end of our summer and about 7 months of growing time). So far everything has taken about a month longer to 'mature' than the tags suggest. I guess they're a guide and not a promise....See MorePeace Lily - Time to give up?
Comments (2)Please post a photo if you can. Leaves and roots if possible. A link to it is fine. :) Take a look at the roots. If they are bunched up pretty close together, I would split the plant in half, replace the soil one more time (make sure it is loose and fast draining), soak in a sink for fifteen minutes, fertilize, and see what happens. Either put the other half in a new pot or discard. Depending on the color of the leaves, it could also be getting too much water. Any mushiness in the roots? They prefer to be watered just as the leaves start to droop. That promotes new flowers. Always cut off flowers that are fading. They like clean leaves. Check for spider mites or other issues beneath the leaves. They aren't very susceptible, but it won't hurt to check. A photo would really help. Check how pliable the leaves are. If they are tan and mushy, too much water. If they are yellow and crispy, not enough. Those are the main issues I can think of at the moment. :)...See MoreIs it time to give up on these?
Comments (2)I have some seeds that I started on 02/27 that still have not come up. I attempted to germinate about 6-7 different types and only the jalapeno's germinated in 3 days. The rest still haven't come up. It doesn't hurt to let them keep on. I have some labuyo that took over a month to germinate. My first try with chiltepin took about 2 months to come up. Comments (5)I am so sorry for the pain you're going through -- But (and this may not help) it doesn't sound all that unusual for 15-year old boys... That's a notoriously difficult age for boys. Difficult for them, with all of the hormones hitting, the physical awkwardness, emerging sexuality, social issues, budding manhood, need for privacy to sort things through, inability to process feelings verbally... And difficult for parents because they really want to help, but the kids absolutely can not let them in at that particular stage. They're separating from their parents -- trying to stop being 'children', but absolutely clueless about how to be 'adults'. Unless they're one of those 'Teflon teens' who are always good-looking, well-coordinated and popular, they're probably desparately confused about their place in the world. Totally in-between... Honestly, if all he's doing is shutting you out, please know that that is normal, even in intact families, and don't overthink it too much. Once he is able to drive and spend more time outside the house, things will probably improve dramatically -- really. And by the time he's 18 or 19, he'll probably be really nice again. I suspect Dad is really enjoying his new relationship with his son. Many men don't seem to know how to relate to young children, and his son's 'emerging manhood' may have been exactly the clue Dad was waiting for (but didn't know it) to recognize something he could bond with. I imagine he's feeling really important in his son's life -- like he finally IS the mentor and 'example' he was always supposed to be......See Morebeesneeds
