Comments (82)Thanks MKRuby, I look forward to the 6th to see who I'll be trading with, I have already started on my May box in an effort to be on time this month. I hope you can use some of the plants I sent to you. Your in a climate similar to mine and everything I sent does well here. I am excited to see my first trade box too. I will post when it arrives and let everyone know about the goodies I get. Thank you for doing this monthly trade, I know it is a huge undertaking and your very appreciated for doing it....See Morenot a 3 headed dragon candelabra
Comments (11)yes, I had decided that was what it is, and I am glad I did not clean it.(yet) if you look at the sister candle holder you will see its finish is very marred compared to mine.. I thought maybe that was from having polished it too much. I will research how to clean this very carefully before proceeding. I would like to get the dust and wax off but not at the cost of that gilded finish! Thanks again for your help Lazygardens, it is a relief to have my questions answered regarding the pieces origins, finish, age and etc. I had never given much thought to that piece until recently and it was so frustrating not to be able to find the answers... the internet has spoiled me. There was a time I would have gone to libraries and searched for days, weeks, months and years. Even now, I was only frustrated in my search for a day or 2 (thanks to you!). What a difference for information junkies the advent of the internet and forums such as these is such a blessing....See MoreShould I polish vintage brass candlestick holders?
Comments (24)Now we know how many cannon balls it takes to fill Nassau Hall... But seriously; LINDAC92—I respect your POV. And; YES! I have "visited" all those places. I'm also a graduate of The Art Institutes. I have seen some ancient Asian metalwork in the Smithsonian and even the other museums you cited, which still have much of their natural "patina" (define this as you will). My reference to museum curators was given as support of my point. (Which, being); that IF a metal worked piece is deemed to be a valuable original creation of someone such as PAUL REVERE, then the undertaking of any restoration is best left to experts. MANY fine items of significance are ruined every day by well-meaning individuals who attempt restoration but end up applying inappropriate or even harmful methods because they are simply ignorant of what they have in hand. Ultimately, when it comes to antique and/or vintage items of significance, I still maintain, that unless one is cognizant of any given piece's providence, and its real potential market or historic value, that any such undertakings are best left to qualified individuals. THE BOTTOM LINE: Admittedly, the majority of inquires on this forum are in regard to items of much less significance. Still, if an owner of an individual piece plans to keep it for their own personal enjoyment, they should clean it as they wish. BUT, if they plan to sell it to the collector market, it's ALWAYS best to leave it "as is"....See MoreMaker of these candle holders
Comments (7)It looks of pewter to me. I found two other Fohl items on a German ebay site. One was a 'garden candlestick' of brass with no indication of vintage, and one was a little oil lamp with globe and wick of pewter. The seller said it was made in the 80s/90s but what century? All of the items were very modest/simple design. Hard to tell by that if they're old or new. Very hard to find any information. I see a lot of engraving at the bottom of your picture, and it is not large enough for me to make out what it says. Is it just a series of numbers?...See Morebradleyd_svh
