My perennial Vinca is coming up every where! It starts to come up in late spring and by summer is in full bloom. It continues to flower through the summers heat (that's nice) but as the fall approaches it dies off and makes a nasty wet looking yellow mess as it rots. Not so nice any more. So yes, it is invasive - at least here in Georgia. The Vinca that is growing in the shade and is being used as a ground cover never blooms so I think the Vinca that is spreading every where through out my yard is an off shoot of the potted nursery plants my wife bought and planted in the garden a few years ago?

A short six days latter and most of the foilage on the dappled willow has browned. I don't have alot faith with this plant at this point. I brougt this up with the nursery in which I purchased them from (this is the only nursery I've had problems with pot bound/girdling root shrubs, in fact 7 in total)...this what he said. "if the plants are not growing out of their pot, usually it means that they are either growing in too wet of soil ,or the planting bed does not have enough organic matter in the soil. Shrubs are different than trees and usually do not girdle themselves as they are always sending sucker growth up and making new roots from these suckers. Yes, ideally a person would like to have plants that are not pot bound, but that is next to impossible to find." Bottomline even with the couple plants out of warranty by a few months he is going to replace them...I thought that was quite classy.

What these look like to me are emerging "grown up" canes on bushes. I get these types of canes on climbers which, when babies, did not climb, but put out small canes. Suddenly, in year 2 or 3, these seriously large climbing canes emerge and shoot up. I do not know if your bushes are climbers or not. Sometimes non-climbing bushes can suddenly put out climbing canes. I would let them alone (stop "tugging" on them - they are very fragile when they first emerge, but get hard and stronger later if left alone) and see what happens. Your bushes could just be planning on being bigger than you thought they would be! Jackie P.S. - feeding the bushes could have encouraged this. However, Bayer 3in1 contains systemic poison that kills polinators and other beneficial bugs. I would just stick to rose food without any poisons in it. P.P.S. Another thought - look way down to where these canes emerge. Are they coming up from BELOW the bud union, or just straight from the ground a little way away from the bush? If so, they might be root stock (suckers) emerging from the roots. In that case, you need to dig down to where they are emerging off the roots and cut them off.

My Jude is definitely of a light if variable yellow color, occasionally perhaps with minor shades of light orange/apricot, but I wouldn't call this an apricot rose. It's yellow. My Austins are doing quite well here in the UK without spray, usually better than my HTs and even OGRs, but it really depends on the variety and climate/position, so any generalization has to be taken with several grains of salt. And as Jeri said, even within any given variety (and not just in roses), some plants are stronger than others. I may be wrong, but I don't think that it's necessarily a matter of minimal genetic variability (although this could conceivably also be the case, given the complexity of genetics), but rather how well they have been grafted (if grafted) and cultivated from the beginning. Budwood or cuttings, even if taken from the same mother plant, don't always take in the same way and some remain weaker than others. Some roses may also be more prone to decline with age than others, especially if not in a perfect position/care. So replacing a declining rose with a new one of the same variety can make a difference without the presence of any genetic difference. Generally, David Austin and many other breeders are now increasingly breeding for disease resistance and performance, not just looks. But even this does not always work, as you can see with Austin's fairly new rose Wisley - a most beautiful rose and great performer which is unfortunately extremely prone to BS and has now been replaced by DA with another variety (Wisley 20008). But generally speaking, the newer Austins are more disease resistant than (some of) the older ones, and most of them are better performers. Within other classes, HTs/floris/polys/OGRs I found that it really depends on the variety, although many HTs can be quite lousy in terms of disease resistance. At least in the wetter climates of the southeastern US, UK and northern Germany. Andrea
