Green Country Seed Savers/ March and April Meetings

Hey folks,

Here's what I put up on the Green Country Seed Savers website, last night. We don't yet have a date for the April meeting. I hope to get that nailed down very soon.

There was such a large turn out for the last meeting we had, that I want to try meeting at Napolis Italian Restaurant again. They have a large meeting room. Though good, our last meeting was so well attended, and the meeting place small, that some of us probably never got a visual of each other!

Here's the text. I'll include the link as well. Comments and suggestions are welcome, either here or there.

March meeting:
We will hold our next meeting of Green Country Seed Savers on Sunday, March 29 at 2:00 PM. This time I think we'll meet at Napolis Italian Restaurant. Our last meeting had so many people that we should plan on using their meeting room and being able to see everyone at the same time!

Here's a link for the restaurant. Let me know if you need any help with directions.

For this next meeting let's count on coming with information to share on where to obtain good garden seed and varieties, adapted to our climate. Be thinking on this. Also, by this time, if anyone has extra seedlings to share or trade, be welcome to bring them.

April Meeting Idea
For our April meeting I've been talking with a couple of members about the idea of meeting in a park or lawn area and making 5' tomato cages out of concrete reinforcing wire. Of course, this would mainly be for those who want to do this. At the same time we could be sharing seedlings, seed and information. What do you think?

The cost of a 150' role of 5' tall concrete reinforcing wire is a little over $100 for a 150' roll. We can purchase a roll or rolls, depending on demand, and then, each person could pay for the length of wire they use for the cages they make! Many people can neither afford nor use all the cages which would come from a role of wire. But among many, we can do this, saving everyone money. These cages are FAR SUPERIOR to anything one can purchase in a garden center! I personally don't need any more. But I bet there are plenty of people out there who would love to get some!

When I made my cages I purchased the special cutters (bolt cutters) which make fast work cutting this wire. I can bring them. Those who want cages would need to come prepared to haul them home, either flattened out or in tube form.

WOW! Your hellebores are beautiful! I tried to grow 2 plants a few years ago and they didnt make it. I planted them late fall, maybe that was a problem. I have 3 crocuses blooming and my daffodils are popping up. To stop my march-april madness I order plants from Bluestone perennials and have them delivered to me at the end of March. They're to early to plant outside for my cold weather, so I transplant them into larger pots and put them in my greenhouse. I can visit them everyday and seeing green sure helps! I also start my tomatoes and peppers and other perennials. Weather reports say a chance of rain/snow showers for monday night to tuesday! I'm ready for summer!!!

Hey folks! I just realized that I did not post an invitation! Our seed saving group is meeting at 2 PM, just South of Tahlequah, on Sunday. We'll have an informal time of conversation and sharing. A number of us will probably bring some plants or seeds to give away. We'd love to have you come out. We'll be meeting at the home of Sand Mueller. I understand. If the meetings were even as far away as Tulsa, I would probably not be able to make it myself. My vision for Green Country Seed Savers is that we will gradual build a network (somewhat overlapping) of grass roots gardeners/seed saver, probably using the website as our central "meeting place." But various local chapters will develop, so, for instance, though anyone would be welcome in any local meeting, there will be local get-to-gethers say, in the Ft. Smith area, Tulsa and Oklahoma City, etc. Yesterday's meeting was wonderful! Though some may not notice it, I am, however an introvert. So, after such a time as we had, in which I spoke A LOT, I needed to recharge a bit. I was glad to distribute ten samples of Woods Mountain Crazy Bean. This variety ought to be widely grown in our region. I am so impressed with it. Here's a link to what I managed to put together on the variety in regard to its history and culture. Most everyone had something to ask or to share. But we did talk about our interest in promoting regionally adapted varieties and multiplying knowledgeable gardeners, able to propagate and distribute these varieties to others, who will then learn to do the same. We had a brief demonstration of how to process a winter squash, along with a discussion both concerning the terms "pumpkin" and "squash," as well as the advantages of growing from the species c. moschata. Grasshoppers, and how to deal with them, came up several times. David and Linda Hickey brought some really great garlic. Ron Cook brought roots of Ula, a Hawaiian Purple (inside and out) sweet potato, which I believe he received from a USDA agent. Ron also brought samples of his Heavy Hitter Okra and commented that he is getting something like $12 per dried pod, right now! He gave them out for free. Ken Goodpasture, who does not do Internet, brought some hot peppers, to share, which some believe are Tabasco. They were really nice. I am probably forgetting something. But you get the idea. Yes, this group's meetings vary between being pretty organized. with one person doing most of the talking; and somewhat chaotic, with most everyone doing the talking. My wife was there for the first time. She is a good judge on how a gathering is going. Jerreth told me that most people seemed thrilled. We had to run early. But a couple of new folks stopped us to say how happy they were about being there. On another occasion we will do more of the controlled type meeting. I am always thrilled when new gardeners come out! It's simply wonderful to help them to succeed. Bryan, a young man of about 13, was at this last meeting. I had done a presentation on seed saving at his 4H club and invited him to our Green Country Seed Savers meeting. He came! From what his mom told me, I'd say that he's got a lot of potential, as it has always been his bent to be fascinated with seeds and propagation.
