Green Country Seed Savers Network/ Sunday November 9

Just in case anyone would like to come, we're having another meeting this coming Sunday afternoon. Among other things, we're planning to discuss the processing of squash seed. There are always folk who come with extra seeds and plant material. I know Ron Cook is planning to bring some sweet potatoes for those who would like to grow their own slips in the spring.

I couldn't find anything on the web site that tells where the meeting is going to be held.

Sorry! My mistake!

It will be at Napolis Italian Restaurant, on Muskogee Ave., in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. That's about a mile and a half North of Walmart, on the main drag through town.

Debbie, sorry i haven't posted, but i was thinking about you and Gary and hoping that he gets better soon. It's sad about Bijoux too - you get attached to these animals. Hope you post soon and let us know what's happening. Snow is falling here as of this morning. There's not much accumulating as it's still just above 0, but it's supposed to be like this all week, so it looks like this is it for us. Still, the mild temperatures and sunny skies have really gone towards shortening the coming winter - fingers crossed that it's like this at the other end and we don't get snow in May again! Last weekend was so nice! I was outside the whole weekend, and i think the weekend before too - can't remember for sure. Anyway, i did EVERYTHING! The plants i haven't been able to get back into gardens were planted in the vegetable bed, all the containers dumped (some i brought inside quite awhile ago), leaves applied as mulch to some of the gardens and some of the more tender plants (Miss Morden Sunrise now wears a cardboard box filled with leaves in the hopes that she won't die right back to the ground again this year), and all my containers are picked up, organized and stored! Whew! I even hung my Christmas lights out! Audric, glad to hear that your Craft Fair did so well. I haven't heard about ours, how much they made, probably because the parents organize it and not the teachers. If it was the teachers, they would have been making a big deal of it in the staff room! LOL Are you a teacher, Audric? What grade? I'm a library technician at our school here. Well, i must run as we're going to town this morning. We're going to have a sulking dog because dh asked his mother to come with us so now the dog has to stay home. He loves to come with us and knows all the fields where there might be cows or horses and gets all excited when he sees them! Last week when we went past the buffalo farm, he leaped into the back of the van and stuck his nose out one of the vent windows! It was quite funny! I thought that the design software would help us set limits on numbers of plants per area but since it has yet to arrive in the mail perhaps Martie is right we should continue on so we dont loose too much momentum. I still however would like to plug our choices into a digital design and will share my attempts and ask for guidance with that as we go along. Below is the list of chosen plants for the vegetable beds although still in the kitchen garden lets move on to herbs (again another area of gardening that I know nothing about). This game is a creation of mutual effort so if you feel strongly about one thing or another or have a different vision please let us know. Should we move the fennel, garlic, and onions to the herb garden or are they considered veggies? The herb garden is 30 x 30 which will allow for nice wide pathways and easy access to plants. Clematis 'Polish Spirit' - Vtskier Turnips - Cady Rhubarb - Mad Gal Spinach 'Prickly-seeded ' - kt Carrots 'Early (Scarlet) Horn' - Bug Tomato 'Early Cascade' - Nhbabs Peas 'Sugar Snap' Tee Pee - Cady Beans - green, yellow and purple with Dill - Mad Gal Basil 'Lettuce leaf' - nhbabs Fennel - Florence - kt Asparagus - Vtskiers Apple 'Golden Russet', espaliered - Martie Eggplant - Bug Swiss Chard 'Ruby Glow' - Cady Onions - Martie Cherry Tomatoes - Vtskier Garlic Nhbabs Globe Artichoke - kt half-dozen sweet bells if they have freezer space for winter use, 4 'Mexi-bells' if seed were still available (slightly warm, wonderful for salsa which I put up in dozens of pint jars each year), 2 Jalapeños, a 'Cayenne' and 3 'Thai' peppers for both heat and their beautiful, compact size. - Solana French Breakfast Radish - Bug Red Leaf Lettus - Mad Gal Cady its your turn to choose an herb.

Jeanne, South Carolina...nice win yesterday!! I used to go to Notred Dame / USC games every other year when ND was out here playing. The tailgating is a blast and I love the games but it became so much work once it was time to get to your seat. Of course, major changes after 9-11. The last time I went to a ND/USC game (after 9-11), after tailgating for several hours, we headed in to the stadium an hour and a half hour prior to kickoff and did not get to our seats until halftime. I am very BIG on security but decided tiz better to watch on TV...LOL! Jayeanne, your Crimsin Tide.....are you OK after that devastating loss yesterday? Great game...but that final second......oh my!!! And my beloved Fighting Irish.....they lost, of course, to Stanford, which I expected would happen. However, Stanford did not blow them away. Final 27-20. Turnovers, turnovers, get ya everytime!! Jeanne, thanks again for Football In The Garden...FUN! The FOTESSERS, great group! Happy Sunday!! Annie

Lots of good information, interesting people and some wonderful samples. Even a beautiful day for a drive, what more could you ask for! I enjoyed the meeting and it was fun to meet George.

I would have loved to have gone to the meeting, but its about a 100 mile drive and caring for ageing parents is a 7 day a week job.

Would have loved to meet everyone and learn a bunch. That newer truck we bought? Been in the shop the last 2 weeks. It's ready now.. but darn it. lol Maybe next time.

I understand. If the meetings were even as far away as Tulsa, I would probably not be able to make it myself. My vision for Green Country Seed Savers is that we will gradual build a network (somewhat overlapping) of grass roots gardeners/seed saver, probably using the website as our central "meeting place." But various local chapters will develop, so, for instance, though anyone would be welcome in any local meeting, there will be local get-to-gethers say, in the Ft. Smith area, Tulsa and Oklahoma City, etc.

Yesterday's meeting was wonderful! Though some may not notice it, I am, however an introvert. So, after such a time as we had, in which I spoke A LOT, I needed to recharge a bit.

I was glad to distribute ten samples of Woods Mountain Crazy Bean. This variety ought to be widely grown in our region. I am so impressed with it. Here's a link to what I managed to put together on the variety in regard to its history and culture.

Most everyone had something to ask or to share. But we did talk about our interest in promoting regionally adapted varieties and multiplying knowledgeable gardeners, able to propagate and distribute these varieties to others, who will then learn to do the same. We had a brief demonstration of how to process a winter squash, along with a discussion both concerning the terms "pumpkin" and "squash," as well as the advantages of growing from the species c. moschata. Grasshoppers, and how to deal with them, came up several times.

David and Linda Hickey brought some really great garlic. Ron Cook brought roots of Ula, a Hawaiian Purple (inside and out) sweet potato, which I believe he received from a USDA agent. Ron also brought samples of his Heavy Hitter Okra and commented that he is getting something like $12 per dried pod, right now! He gave them out for free. Ken Goodpasture, who does not do Internet, brought some hot peppers, to share, which some believe are Tabasco. They were really nice. I am probably forgetting something. But you get the idea.

We hated to miss it, but had to help my Dad with winterizing pipes and seeing to a lame cow. Next time.
