Salvia coccinea?

It looks likes salvia coccinea, a.k.a. tropical sage. It also comes in pink and a white. Hummingbirds love it. The plant self seeds readily and is long blooming. Once established, I find it to be quite drought tolerant.

Definitely Tropical Sage. A great little native for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. When grown from seed, they will flower first year. They are fairly cold hardy, but I actually prefer when the foliage gets killed by a freeze because the plant comes back far lusher in the Spring. They will get up to 3ft tall and wide if allowed to. While they come in white, red or pink, I have one variety that has red flowers and dark, almost black, calyx and it makes for a very striking plant. I took cuttings last fall but none of them took. I am hoping this one comes back from roots. Swallowtail Garden Seeds has seeds for a few varieties, you can find them under 'Annuals', though they are perennial here.

Thanks everyone. Lovely little flower. I didn't recognize it as a salvia because the flower looks somewhat like a lobelia. Michael, were yours killed off by that hard freeze last month? I wonder what temp below freezing they will survive without leaves freezing. I have a few seeds. Let's hope they sprout.

They weren't killed off, just knocked back. Only the ones on the north side actually go back to roots. But they are usually root hardy.

They produce alot of seeds. I have one in my sunny bathroom that is blooming now. They reseed for me and are very easy to grow from seeds.
