Decision Time: Air Tub or Soaking Tub
Comments (12)I've had my eye on a Toto Clayton tile-in airbath for a while. I can't say they are any better than a kohler or other brand; we just stumbled on it because we'd already bought a toto clayton toilet and thought we might stay in the same line as we redo the bath. As for the step depth, I remember reading about the design work of Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins, who believe that we can defy death through architecture. They believe that houses that are physically challenging to live in are better, and their designs are frankly crazy by any standards we are accustomed to. I rolled my eyes when I first read about their work. One of their designs required crash helmets and hiking boots to tour, and some visitors broke bones. (I couldn't make this up if I tried!). But as bizarre as their designs are (you can check out their website at reversibledestiny.org), it did make me start to wonder, what if our houses required us to move and stretch a little more than they do now? So while I don't want to live in a house where visitors regularly fall and break bones, it seems to me that a navigating a deep step into tub is not asking for that much, especially if you have grab bars in the right places and a non-slip floor next to the tub. I suppose an indigenous hunter-gatherer would roll their eyes at our sedentary coddled lifestyle and think we're crazy to live in a way that allows diabetes and heart disease to become epidemic. So go ahead and get that airbath. Maybe you'll live a little bit longer :-) Here is a link that might be useful: toto clayton airbath....See MoreTub/shower combo or tub and shower stall
Comments (15)I know I probably went overboard, but I have been searching Houzz for shower/tub combos for myself if I decide to go in that direction. Most of these pictures have Master Bath titles - they tend to be small houses or apartments in large cities where space is an issue. They all have a generous sized tub. A few have extra shower bling and even a separate tub filler. All of them have material choices and the level of tile work that you see in a master bathroom. I'm sure that if I searched Houzz I could find just as many, or even more, remodels of small master baths where they have just built a walk in shower. I think the decision to do a shower/tub may be a personal choice because they want a soaking tub - since they are titled Master I'm assuming the bath is not the only bath in the house and they could easily just go with a shower. Comments (1)Just thought I'd mention, I gave up on the teak tray and found a brushed nickel tub tray at Bed, Bath and Beyond, that has a spot for soap, a book, a candle and a glass of wine if you so desire. It's from the Hotel Collection called an Aromatherapy Bath Caddy and is made by better-sleep.com. It extends to a width of 38 inches. Can't wait to use it. Comments (15)I understand your desire to replace seldom/never-used tub with walk-in shower. We put a walk-in shower (without door or curtain necessary) in our previous home, which we built 25 years ago. It was one of our favorite features in the house and, when we built our current home put in a walk-in shower in the master once again. We didn't include a tub to gather dust. However, we do have a second full bath four our adult disabled child. Our child doesn't like showers and only takes baths. However, we included a showerhead with the tub for possible visitors or in case our shower was out of commission for a while. I think, if you're not worried about resale and don't figure on children/grandchildren in the future, you'd be fine without a tub if that is your preference. However, if, like most of us, you do have the possibility of resale in the future then you would have to be willing and able to put in a tub in order to sell the house. While I don't want a tub in my master bath, I wouldn't want to have a home that didn't include an available tub (even if DH and I never use it)....See Moreontariomom
