Jasdip you can buy a high heat tape at the hardware store. We have one made by 3M that was used to tape the joints on our woodstove pipe/chimney. I don't have a label to read because it was left here by the previous owner, but I did a search and see that there are several available. Just search for High Temp tape. HTH Kym

I'm concerned about the washing of the lid, glue would work great, if it can stand the heat. The tape will work, if it can get wet :-D

I'm always one to MacGyver stuff and I'm looking at that appliance wondering if you could use a glass bowl(heat safe) or a stainless pot (or bowl) over the top of it since the plastic bowl is cracked? I guess it would depend if the top is a standard size width like 10". Just a thought. Otherwise the heat proof tape used on the outside. Seems like you could get away with minimal washing, you'd just want to use a different bowl to eat out of.

What about contacting the company that makes Stir Crazy and ask if they sell replacement tops.

On plastic, I use "Superhold - Plastic Surgery". It's made for plastic. It worked quite well, better than super glue.

Jodi, I did look into that right off the bat, it's almost the price of a new machine. If I can't fix the cracking, I'll probably end up by doing that, since the new machines don't work as well as the one we have.

Edited to add that I went to the website and they don't ship outside of the US at all.

Try some clear wide packing tape. I used that once for a temporary fix on a large plastic bowl that was cracked. It's been about 5 years now and I've used/washed that bowl dozens of times and the tape is still holding and secure.

Just another thought, have you asked on Freecycle if anyone has one? Maybe someone else has one sitting around collecting dust. I for one have been using a paper bag in the microwave to pop mine.

I asked for a corn popper on Freecycle, and this was the only response I got. I think most people use microwave popcorn :-)

When the lady wrote, she did say that it had a crack or two in it, and I told her I was willing to give it a try. We love the machine, so we want to see if the crack will hold and not give way.

I've got the packing tape on it, nice and tight. I think we'll try it out tonite! :-D

AG, do you just use regular popcorn in a paper bag? It doesn't get too hot and burn the bag?

All I do is take a school lunch sized bag and put 1/4 cup of regular old popcorn (I bought some GMO free bagged) drizzle a bit of olive oil (very little) sprinkle with popcorn salt. I then turn the top down about a half inch and put a piece of masking tape just big enough to hold it closed about an inch long. I lay it on its side and pop for 2 minutes and 10 seconds in a 1100 watt microwave. I put it on a paper plate to absorb the oils while it's popping but that's optional.

Bo not use super glue. Its a cyanoacrylate (sp?) and many varieties melt at 150 F.

Have you tried cruising the aisles of kitchen wares to see if you can find a bowl that might fit? If you do find one, you may need to add vents.

Hmmm, I wonder if that would work jemdandy.......putting a glass bowl on top but something small under the edge to lift it to let out the steam.

Think you should put the exact measurement of the bowl on paper and the model number of the popper in your wallet, purse phone case whatever so you will have it on you. If you stop by chance at Value Village or any of the Sally Ann stores, they usually have an abundance of unwanted small appliances, and or parts of the same. When and if summer ever comes keep your eyes out for yard sales. You would probably be able to pick up a whole new to you popper for under $7. If it works as well as yours you are a winner. If not you still get a cover bowl for cheaper than you would replacing it. If you are going to use a glass bowl, try slipping a couple of round toothpicks under it to let steam escape.
