I don't know the difference between the whites but I know many people on GW like dove white. I would remove the 4" bs & mirror. I think you can keep the black appliances. If you really hate them you can get new ones in a couple of years. The tile is fine but looking at your inspiration photos I like the darker hardwood. I think I would pick a wall color after the cabs were painted. Then roll on some samples.

Brass accents are lovely on white. First thing I would do in that kitchen though it put a real outside vented hood above the stove. I have no idea how those owners kept the glass cabs above the microwave clean if they cooked/fried anything ever.

I would remove the granite backsplash if you want a more modern look. I'd also keep the floor tiles for now. Seems uneconomical to replace the floor while keeping the island the way it is. Hold off on the floor and see how you feel about cooking in that layout first. Maybe you'll want a bigger fridge etc.

Removing the backsplash may be trickier than it sounds. The granite backsplash is thicker than tile would be and the counter may not be scribed closely enough to the wall for a thinner backsplash to work.

Crl, if the OP did remove the 4" backsplash and install mirror, could she/should she replace it with a quarter-round? I'm thinking it would be a good idea anyway, to keep anything that might get shoved back from hitting the glass at the bottom?

Honestly, I have never done it so I'm not all that sure. I just have read on here that it's an issue. What kind of quarter round? Wood painted black? Might be hard to match the counter and have it look right, I think?

I love and put in a white kitchen but also like the wood in this one. Agree that the island is really strange looking and if you have a new island with a beautiful and more conventionally shaped countertop as the focal point that will make a huge difference. Changing the flooring would be a huge plus also.

I agree with cawaps & scrappy about your wood cabinets. I like white, and am planning on white cabinets, but I think your wood cabinets are very nice. I also think your island shape is very odd, and would consider making it rectangular.

I think if you leave the island white, and maybe replace the black appliances with white (which will brighten things up & look good with the white island) you'll go a long way toward brightening the kitchen. You can decide about the floor at a later date.

My only thought is, that I really hate seeing white appliances with paired another white on the walls or cabinets. that doesn't match. I'm not a fan of black appliances either but would rather have black than mis-matched white.

Look at HOUZZ photos of kitchens with white appliances - there are many. Look at the ones w/ white cabinets/white appliances (many on there with varying shades of white - doesn't bother me, but it may bother you) and white appliances with wood cabinets & see what you think, if you're interested in going w/ white. I'm planning on white cabs with white appliances. Whether the white matches doesn't really matter to me - but it would drive some nuts.

I agree, I like the wood cabinets and your kitchen doesn't seem too dark to me either. Looks like you have a decent number of can lights, and lots of light from the window too. You could add some undercabinet lighting too, if you want it brighter. Maybe some lights in the glass cabinets too. You can certainly keep the floor tile if you want, its neutral enough for the cabinets color you have now, or white if you do decide to paint them.

I like your wood cabs too. Another thing to consider is two tone. White uppers. Wood lowers?

The one thing I would consider before anything else is squaring up the front if the island. I agree with others on it being strange. I am having a hard time thinking of anything else because I keep imagining it firing up its engines for take off. Haha!

I agree with keeping the cabinets in a wood tone vs white. Although this kitchen in all white would be sharp. I'd wait to replace the appliances (all stainless would be my choice over white even if you paint the cabinets white) as I think with a new island and new flooring they will become non issues. I would use a lighter countertop on the new island to create drama.

While you may like the mirrored look tile, you may benefit from using a glass tile(not ceramic) instead of mirror. Number 1 you can leave the backsplash and 2 you can introduce color with even solid colored glass tile. You didn't mention if you have under cabinet lighting?? With under cabinet lighting and glass tile you'd be introducing both bling and brightness.

Add a nice vintage looking hanging light over your new island and something similar over the sink that is similar looking but smaller in scale.

Hard to see what you have for pulls and knobs but they look like they are white porcelain. There are lots of beautiful pulls and knobs that might add brightness to your cabinets also.

Another idea would be to only paint the cabinets by the frig and the island white. Not a really stark white but something that would compliment the wood in the cabinets. If you chose this option - I'd replace all the appliances to stainless.

Could you install a drawer microwave in the island? It would really break up the look of ALL those cabinets if you put the microwave into island and put in a nice hood. You could remove the cabinet above the present microwave or leave it ( I'd remove it.) Behind the stove you could then install a design tile to create focal interest.
