Recessed lighting - Remodel (yes/no) LED Can and Trim/Engine (model)

Hi,

I want to install recessed lighting in my house (living room, bedrooms, corridor/walkway). I have called some electricians to give me quotes. I have read about this subject on internet and some excellent posts like below

So most of the electrician who came they said it will be better that I install remodel kit and read very average reviews about Halo recessed cans (4 out of 5 electrician wants to use this though - cheaper cost, easily available from HD etc.)

After looking at some sets (fixture/housing cans, trim/engine etc.) I have shortlisted the following combination -

Whatever I have read for the above material it seems to me they are compatible with each other but thought to take expert option about the choice of above materials. I want to use good quality material as i will be paying the same labor cost so I'm fine if there are are best quality and little more expensive. None of the electrician talked about Juno - only 1-2 knew or heard of it. 1 of them said he will do only Nora.

Which wire I should go with the above combination - 14/2 or 12/2?

I'm thinking to propose to these electricians that I will get the material (housing can, trim/engine, dimmer swtich, wire etc.)

Any help in finding the best combination would be appreciated.

If you are getting stuff from HD,

The Cree CR6 module is great and the local pricing may be better than what is available from amazon.

The dimming performance of LED modules varies from vendor to vendor since it depends on the components used.

Since LED modules are used, it would be better to use a dimmer rated for LED e.g. - Lutron's Diva CL instead of an incandescent dimmer.

14 gauge wire is fine for 15A circuits, though some would prefer 12 gauge.

If you intend to get all the material yourself, make sure that you have all the necessary wiring, junction boxes, wire nuts, housings, lamp modules, wire staples, etc ahead of time.

It would be sensible to get stuff from HD/ Lowes instead of from amazon since you'd need to purchase quite a bit and end up having to return/ exchange some.

If you're subject to energy efficiency laws (e.g. Title 24), you'd need to get stuff in compliance.

I will choose LED recessed lights. LED lighting is the most energy-saving way of illumination in the present day, saving up to 90% energy compared to other lighting. Its best if your electrician buys the trims or lets you use his discount at his supplier. Just because your GC won't markup the prices doesn't mean the electrician won't. In any case, you need accurate prices for the trims and that's very hard to do online. If the wrong trims were delivered or were defective then or later, you would be the one taking the hit. [The only building materials I ever ordered online were PVC downspouts and its been over 2 months and I haven't seen them yet. It turns out they were made in Denmark and had to be shipped through Canada to SC and then to MA] The next thing to do is to find the best local supplier, go see the fixtures in the showroom and get real prices. Maybe that will involve more than one supplier. Until that happens you are spinning your wheels.

I ended up putting in Nicor DRD 2" LED lights. Nicor does free assessments that I found very helpful. I've been very happy with the lights. I put in a 5x4 grid, so 20 lights. The symmetric alternate was 3x4 = 12. Knowing what I know now, I'd probably have gone with 12 instead of 20, I like having really low lighting in the evening, and never turn it all the way up. But I'm quite happy with what I did, too, and at the lowest setting, it's nice evening light. Although the LED lights don't draw a lot of electricity, because I have 20, they flickered with a standard Lutron dimmer, so I had to get the Pro model, and now it works fine

IMO the most critical aspect of residential lighting design is the lighting of walls, kitchen counters and cabinets and the light quality and distribution of wafer and giant gimbal units is unfocused and disappointing. There are few affordable adjustable-angle and wall-washer recessed fixtures other than the small gimbal, elbow and eyeball fixtures that extend below the ceiling. Recessed lighting began with store displays and couched accent lighting is still its best use but today's open space designs and giant TV's have reduced the opportunity to create dramatic focus points in a house but that just makes those few opportunities more critical. For a tight budget the most affordable 4" retrofit adjustable LED I've found is the Nora Cobalt with a Haze reflector that matches the Cobalt Click 2 downlight. Its has a Cree COB LED and is Title 24 compliant for excellent color rendering at the price of a retrofit PAR 20.

Thanks very much David for replying and suggesting Cree CR6 as a trim/engine & LED exclusive dimmer from Lutron.

I have re-read the above listed dimmer i.e. Leviton 6674. It has a toggler which lets a user select incandescent or LED.

Since my house was built in 1960 - that's why electrician's are suggesting remodel? One of the electrician is the same one who did recessed lighting for my two neighbors. I do have attic access and it is accessible too with not much difficulty.

Thanks for listing other materials which I will need for this project. I can get everything locally just I wanted to use best quality of material for the important parts in this project as I would not like to have frequent problems (flickering, replacing trim/engine, durability etc.) and upfront cost which I'm paying is the same.

Remodel housing is used when the ceiling is left in place. A hole is cut from the bottom and the housing held in place (against the ceiling board) using clips.

Flickering and other dimming issues could be caused by a number of factors

a. A neutral wire that may float momentarily

b. Dimming range of the light

c. Incorrect dimmer used

d. Electrical noise , ...

And you meant CR4 - if I understand correctly CR6 is for 6" and CR4 is for 4"?

If I go with the above selection - are they all compatible and work? My little study said it will work but wanted to get expert opinions.

Yes.

The CR6 may fit into some 5" cans but is generally used in 6".

CR4 - 4" cans
