Hey, JoJo... Do the directions on the Soap mention rinsing the leaves after application/before sun exposure? I've seen bad things happen to plants that were soap/oil treated and then put back into the sun. Sadly, I even toasted a pepper plant in just such a fashion :-( Josh

"This tree was planted about 2-3 months ago, with ammended soil in full sun." Generally, it's not good to amend the backfill soil when planting trees or shrubs. Amendments frequently cause drainage issues and root development problems. "I'm not sure what type of fertilizer it has been given, but nothing within the past week." Trees and shrubs don't often need to be fertilized. Improper fertilization can cause serious problems or death of the tree. Have you had a soil test that indicated a need for additional nutrients? When you say it hasn't had any fertilizer in at least a week, it sounds like it may have been receiving mega-doses of something prior to a week ago. Surely you aren't fertilizing the poor thing once a week! "It was watered for between 30 min to 1 hour every other day and looked fine until a few days ago." Wow, that sounds like a lot of water! Have you been checking soil moisture in between waterings? I don't know what kind of soil you have or how much water you have been supplying, but your description definitely raises a red flag for way way too much water. Are you sure you are not drowning the tree? Trees can die from too much water as easily as from too little. With the information given, it's impossible to say for sure what's happening with your tree, but it sounds like overwatering may be a likely suspect. Other planting issues may also have contributed to the problem. Details of how the tree was planted (planting depth, condition of roots at planting, how the roots were conditioned for planting, type of native soil, relative amount and type of backfill amendment, etc, etc) might lead to further insight. Believe it or not, my Dr. Huey on the east side by the house where it's total shade all afternoon had curling leaves like that this evening, had the hose going for other things there, so I watered it, didn't ever water it for all the 30 or so years I had it after it reverted to rootstock and seldom before, first time watering this year today. Then last year I dug it out, trying to get all the roots, just couldn't get all of a huge mass which I had to cut in half to get most of it out, remainder very deep. Last year before I dug it out, the deep freeze did affect some of it. Well it came back, and I let it do its thing like before. It never had any PM or much else, and I knew what that was before I got into roses because the lilac is often covered with it, no sign of that but I'll look closely tomorrow. I decided to give it a reprieve and let it grow, but there were two, when it blooms, if it is the second one that was there, the easiest to dig out, I'm whacking it because it didn't have such nice blooms; there is a difference in Dr. Huey's from photos I've seen here and my own experience. It's only been in the high 80's and low 90's and very humid, it's been much hotter than that many summers past, some in recent years, going over 100.

I grew some basil a few years back that got the same thing. I just picked off the afflicted leaves and removed them from the area before disposing of them and it cleared up on my plants. I believe that it is a fungus of sorts which is why I say not to just drop the leaves at the base of the plant but to remove them from the area completely. You may also want to watch when you water it for a bit to make sure that you are getting the leaves too wet which would make for an ideal habitat for things to grow.
