Tomatoes in 4 gallon pots
Comments (29)One gallon , by volume is a lot of roots. Separate the roots from soil mix (rinse it off ) Put its in a 5 gallon bucket and fill it with water. Now take the roots out and observe how much the volume/ level of water is reduced. That is the volume of roots, without anything attached to them. Another way to look at it: If the AVERAGE roots diameter is 1/16th of an inch , one gallon of roots will be about 6, 300 foot =2100 Yards. Lets take a more conservative estimate of average root diameter = 1/12". In this case one gallon of roots will be about 3500 feet long. If you think of average length of root to be 5 feet per root, then you should have about 700 individual roots. Somebody mentioned leaving finer roots behind. Even if so, finer roots don't have much volume. I am talking about TRUE volume not the visual appearance. Check this one! This is a typical double decker tomato root system. Mine were just like that when I pulled them out at the end of season. Even if you double or even triple it, it is not going to add to a root mass of one gallon....See MoreHow many tomatoes should I plant?
Comments (23)Last year I wasn't sure how many plants to plant and I wanted to have a good variety, so I grew about 12 different varieties, 2 of each, for a total of 24 plants. It was just me and my wife, but I figured I wanted to try out a bunch of different varieties and figured on some possibly being duds, dying off, etc. Well, even with last year being terrible for tomato growing, I still had enough that we were eating tomatoes for lunch and dinner (hadn't found a breakfast tomato dish yet, heh), making salsa, bruschetta, and tomato sauce by the gallon, I gave 10 pound bags of tomatoes to my parents and in-laws, friends, people at work, etc... And even with all that, my kitchen counter, island, and back patio table were covered in tomatoes of varying degrees of ripeness. I didn't can any tomatoes since I frankly didn't expect what I got and was overwhelmed, and since I've never done canning, I was afraid to mess it up, heh. Those we didn't use, we gave away to friends and family. For the coming year, I want to can some, but additionally I was thinking of donating extras to local charities. That being said, I'm cutting back a little this year, from 24 plants to 18 total - I figure I'll spread them out a little more than I did originally (my garden got a little crowded towards the end of the season) and I also figured that if this season turns out to be any good at all, I should likely get even more tomatoes out of less plants. In my opinion, since you plan to can extensively, make sauces, etc., and you seem to have a short season potentially, I would still think that 50 would be enough - but being the person I am, I tend to think you should grow as many as you can comfortably. If you have extras that you can't can or use fresh, etc., I'd just give those to peopl who can use them. I am of the train of thought that I'd rather have my yard used for growing things I can eat rather than silly grass (and some weeds), heh....See MoreWhere should I put this cherry tomato container? Stake vs cage?
Comments (4)labradors/Linda, I don't think we can move the upside down container. The iron stake is pretty deep into the ground as it is, and slightly bent due to storm damage, so I am weary of moving it, and have it secured to the staircase with jute. I wish I could hang it off a tree or something stronger! haha. Also, I live in a co-op, and the tree is on "our" side. It also gets significantly more sun here. How much, and what kind of a difference will it make if I transplant into a bigger container? I have read 5 gallons is the general rule, but seen so many people post online - and in person - with containers smaller than I am using. Either way, I think by the stairs will become the permanent spot. The container is hidden from street level by a bush in front, and there is already an upside down plant, there, so it won't look random if it's up against the steps. Agressive? Dang! I got cherries instead of bigger tomatoes for two reasons: I thought they'd be faster to grow, and I thought the plants would be smaller. ha! Thanks, you guys!...See MoreHow many tomatoe plants per 55 gallon drum cut in half?
Comments (6)Be sure you have enough drainage holes in each half. I grow in half whisky barrels that are about the same size and drill six holes in the bottom as well as four to six holes on the sides about 2 inches above the base. When I had fewer holes, I had problems with soggy soil in the bottom....See Moresuncitylinda
