Backsplash idea to go with my vintage tile in my green galley
Comments (16)My thought was to essentially use the Heath tile as a field tile. The wall of green is my concern as well. I am not sure if I am going for strong statement presence for any tile. All the colors are fairly intense and my thought is that they will balance out so that no one color will shout out "look at me". I want the vintage tile to be there and have a presence but not necessarily shout. Also as my kitchen is a longish galley, there is really no perspective where someone sees the vintage tile straight on unless they are cooking or standing in the landing area. I will try to take a couple of perspective shots and post it. On using other 4x4s or cream or white tiles as field tiles. I have gone to fireclay multiple times as their tile time is similar to stonelight but nothing has really clicked. I am not able to picture the pencil liner around the vintage tile picture frame and the continung elsewhere idea. Robotropolis - Negative space for eye to rest --> I think I sort of get it but not sure how to achieve it :) Hopefully the wise ones in this forum will guide me and prevent me from going astray. Localeater - you are right. I do want to use the vintage tile as that has been the inspiration from the beginning and it is the tie in to the hood. Mabel - I specified the colrs based on the BM color sample sheets, The cabinet guys mixed it in the lacquer they use for spraying. I will recheck but the issue maybe the light when I took the photos. It was late evening on a cloudy day with only my splash....See MoreVintage Kitchens - Portland (PDX) ''Kitchen Revival Tour April 16
Comments (46)The Kitchen Revival Tour is this Saturday, April 16. As I understand it, you go to the Architectural Heritage Society's office to pick up tickets, map, and tour materials. I believe they open around 10 am or a bit before. It is a self-guided, self-paced tour of whichever of the houses you choose to visit, so the local and visiting KF'ers will run into each other randomly if at all. But I thought it might be fun to list some secret recognition codes that we and only we will know to look for. Here's mine: I will be the guy wearing chrome-plated Ray-Bans - propped up on his head, if not over his eyes. Anyone else want to post a top-secret, spy-behind-enemy-lines, recognition code? Your dashing yellow silk cravate, the boa feather in your chapeau, green lizardskin handbag held by the second and fourth fingers of the left hand? Just keep it a secret, lest we be betrayed to the stasi....See MoreSchool me on galley kitchen layout!
Comments (50)I posted during your first round of discussions - my finished kitchen has a layout fairly similar to what you're considering. It's a great work triangle for me, even though ours is a corridor galley with a ton of through traffic. Ours was only about 91" wide, so we recessed a CD fridge about 15" and opted for reduced depth lowers on that side. That gave us a 48" aisle which is perfect. We also hung a GE spacesaver microwave on that side, which is incredibly functional. We have uppers on both sides and it doesn't feel closed in at all, perhaps because we opened one narrow end to another room - so the overall difference in terms of openness was already pretty dramatic. Since you asked, I'd make one suggestion - if you can swing 48" between the sink and range, you'll be even happier. I have 36" now, and it's fine, especially since I have an overly large sink with a cutting board on top and I prep over the sink. But if I could have eked another 12" out, I would have done it in a heartbeat (it wasn't possible for me due to a support post for a load-bearing wall that was opened.)...See MoreVintage kitchen needs updating. Small budget.
Comments (67)Ah..(sorry I'm too talkative..)..check your local Craigslist maybe too? People get rid of stuff..and sometimes of new stuff as well-when remodeling for example. The prices are generally pretty good, so you never know. Tons of fridges on our Craigslist..true, I never payed attention to their finish that much.. I know though we bought a new bisque fridge, a smaller one, and pretty modest, for my MIL rental. My DH bought it-have no idea where. Can ask him. But it doesn't look impressive or charming like your stove. It's very basic. Well the whole kitchen is super basic. It's a tiny one bedroom. The location is great though, very central, walking distance to everything, nice parks around-so 1600 per month lol. And you have to do the laundry in the laundromat....See Morehuruta
