Have you considered looking on Craigslist? There seem to be so many nice ones on ours....especially if you are looking for the smaller size. Then as the boys grow ( assuming they are young) you can replace it with something you may love more.

As an aside...a relative recently replaced their kitchen dining table with an " indestructible" one from West Elm. It and the benches were very expensive! Plus, it is hideous!!!! You have to be willing to embrace the look.

I like the one you have and second repainting it if you are tired of the color/markings. : )

I like that the current table has storage underneath. Depending on what you use the room for, you could put chalkboard paint on the table or paint it in a fun color.

Or modgepodge an engineering print photo on there.

I think in your case an ottoman type coffee table would be best and people could then put their feet up as well since you have no ottomans.

I have the end tables that match this coffee table from Ballard. They're wood but not very dark -- which I think would work better than white in your room. The shelf below is handy and it's 24" wide. The wood is distressed but not SUPER distressed like some similar pieces. Any dings from exuberant Lego sessions will blend right in, though.

i think a table with a light to medium wood tone would work well...not too dark since your sofas are dark.....I made that mistake. I'm not sure how a painted table would hold up with two active boys. Your room is very pretty!

@grapefruit1_ar, I have haunted CL as well as a few reliable consignment/vintage stuff stores, but no luck so far. (There's one DC vintage place that puts all its new items on line, I really wish all these stores did that, since it can be hard to get there in between work & weekend obligations.)

@laughablemoments, @bbstx, @nosoccermom, I've thought a lot about refinishing the current table. It's ridiculously sturdy, but it's seen every kind of kid slobber over the past decade and would need some serious work. I have a long list of hoped-for projects, and I suspect I'll never find the time to do this right.

@sueb20, I just received a Ballard catalog so now I'm studying that coffee table. I think it would work better than the one I linked in terms of tone.

@tibbrix, I would love to do an ottoman - I often kick my feet on the table. But a hard surface is still a must, I think, both for kids' building/drawing/snacking, and for my husband's coffee addiction.

@joaniepoanie, my kids are 6 and almost 11yo, so we should be past the real destructive phase. But in a small house with 2 crazy tall/rowdy boys, that phase never seems to fully end. (And on some level, I'm glad we're still drowning in legos, since I know the next phase involves texting and more questionable video games.)

Part of my problem is that - absent the kids - I'd probably want something along the lines of the glass C&B table we had before they were born. We tossed that one after one of those ridiculous first-time mom incidents where I was convinced the baby fell and hit his head on it; (It was only after an MRI that I realized the lump was from a bug bite!) As the GW saying goes, I need to decorate for the life I have, which means the foremost consideration is indestructibility! Thanks all - I"ll keep you posted on the after whenever that comes!

This idea might be crazy, but...what about one of those storage ottomans that has a lid that is padded on one side, and hard surfaced on the other? Would it be realistic for the boys and hubby to use the hard surface for play and coffee, but flip it over when you want something cozy for relaxing with your feet up? Don't forget about serving trays for setting some mugs of coffee on, too. : )

I bought this coffee table for my DH because he sit on the sofa and surfs the web constantly. I bought the dark wood model but it is available in this pretty off white. Is it beautiful? No but it sure easily stows all his stuff and is very versatile. There are two drawers on the side opposite the liftable section. Your boys could stow a lot of Legos in this table and it is still reasonably attractive.

From what you have said, I would start by cleaning the table with a super strong cleaner. Then, paint it whatever color you like.

I like that it has a lower shelf for books, magazines or baskets. I think it could be perfect. If it is sturdy and your boys are rough housing I'd consider a strong contender of an option.

I went without when my kids were little. Their STUFF took up too much room, sharp corners seemed counter productive and the wear and tear on furniture wasn't worth the waste of money. Mean while DH made one for his mom. We inherited about the time we felt the need for a coffee table in our home. Your space would feel full without a "coffee" table.

What is under the lift-up part? Is it flat and table like under there, a cavernous opening, something in between? I can't see that side very well in the pictures.

I just checked the dimensions of Holly-Kay's table and it is a 44 inch square. I think you need something rectangular.

Check out Wayfair. They have lots of rectangular coffee tables with storage drawers/baskets.

Laughable the half under the lift up is empty. You can stow quite a bit in it. DH has a wicker basket filled with this and that, a throw for when he's chilly and there is room for a lot more. The stationary side has the two drawers . I have fabrics swatches and sample books in the one drawer and Christmas ornaments in the top drawer. It is the most versatile table I've ever had. WTBS, if I was putting form over function I would rather have a different table but this is a work horse and DH loves it!
