Another example of using texture and line in the garden
Comments (8)Steve, it would be easier to refer you to the photos of this same garden showing the entire area, to illustrate how a vignette relates to the larger garden. I was trying to use the analogy of the human body as a metaphor for how the similarities of the plants as a repeating element link the entire garden together when one steps back to see it as a whole. From a greater distance, it will be the massed repeating forms and color more so than the textural contrasts that unify the garden, which I think of as the "skin" that ties it all together. I also find it a natural linkage between plants when they are similar in their needs; in this case, all had to be both shade and root competition tolerant because they were being underplanted below existing mature Coast Live Oaks, and also tolerant of drier soils between irrigation cycles, as our native oaks are intolerant of continually wet soils in summer. I also switched out the irrigation system on this front slope from uniform spray to targeted drip so that I could keep the immediate areas adjacent the oak trunks completely dry. This wider view of the front garden is not really at a point where I would use it as a portfolio photo, as the limited irrigation for the oak's health has meant that the plantings have yet to really fill in. Typically, after a year's growth, almost any of my recent garden installations would be completely filled in; this section of the garden has been a tougher one for the new plants. I think you will be able to see that the vignettes of those two plant photos are just a subset of the entire garden, but repetition of plant forms, foliage colors, plant types(multiple layers of different succulents in this case), and repeating the monochromatic house colors with the choice of rock for retaining the slope by the sidewalk all reinforce a common experience. While the individual plants selected have nothing whatsoever to do with a native California Oak Woodland understory plant community, they are all quite well adapted to the conditions, and look "woodsy and shade tolerant" without screaming "exotic" in my opinion. Does the additional photo explain what I mean more so than the text? Browse the other photos in the various Drager Garden sets on my Flickr account if you want to see how much the garden really varies from area to area. The east side of the house with the most sun is the most radically colorful portion of the landscape,(lots of orange against the copper house siding), and the rear garden slope at the back of the house/patio is also less monochromatic in use of plant colors, but still uses a lot of the same plants as here in the front garden. Fire safety issues and deer browsing tolerance as well as gopher tolerance were also prime selection criteria for plantings in this garden. Comments (60)OP's can create a mess dumping their trash to get other's reactions. Sometimes it's intentional and sometimes it's a slip of the index finger. It happens all the time though hopefully this thread wasn't intentional (say it aint so!). It does bring to mind something a dear friend sent to me the other day. Hope you all don't mind... it is a bit philosophical... but since getting it I'm looking at life like a "trash truck" so just wanted to share and sorry if it's inappropriately to deep .....especially before morning coffee!!! ;) One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off from my hotel for the airport. Suddenly a black car raced out of a parking space right in front of us. My driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around, waved his finger and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy....I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!' This is when my driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Trash Truck.' He explained that many people are like Trash trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let trash trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so..... 'Love the people who treat you right...then say a prayer for the trash trucks.'...See MoreSmall home...or 'Not So Big' house?
Comments (16)LL I am not directing this AT you in any way. Just some thing I have noticed in many of my friends. They complain their houses are too small. But they have say 6 sets of dishes for when company comes holidays whatever. OK I am guilty I have two sets of dishes or put together sets and nothing matches but goes together as a set or I choose to use it that way. Then they have decorations for every holiday imaginable and need places to store this stuff. But when the holiday happens they just go out and buy new stuff to store. Or if they are like me I do not even celebrate holidays so the stuff I had just sat in my storage areas. No more all stuff gone. Some times people buy so much stuff to give them the feeling of a life style they would like to have but never do it in reality. I was guilty of this too. No more. This is how I can live in a smaller house. And we spent many many years in much smaller houses.8 years in two houses at 800 SQ FT and 864 SQ FT, Another 4 years in an 1130 SQ FT. So this house is actually large for us. But there again I have my glass room just for that and I LOVE that. So does my husband because I no longer have glass projects all over the house. We have long ago given up having the "guest room". We have a room where some one can sleep should they want to but if it is not good enough for them they can go 10 miles to the motel.I use it as my sewing and reading or napping away room if I need one. I actually even used it as my office the other day when I needed quiet to work on city books. Versatile room. I really used to think bigger is better. I am so glad I am no longer of that mind set. I look around our living room dining room areas open to each other and we could easily seat 12 people here. If we needed so sit at tables I could do it. The area I am speaking of is 26 all the way across, double wide, by 11 on one side and say 15 on the other side. NO it would not be a perfect setting but I am sure every one would have just as much fun. But you need to build what you feel you need to live comfortably. No one can make up your mind for you. You have your needs. We all live differently....See MoreLiving Well in a Small Home
Comments (16)Glad the article has been enjoyed and that we've got some action happening here. It's been rather quiet lately. Oh that we could lose 15 lbs fast. Ha. Those ads on websites are so annoying. You just have to put up with them while you read what you went there for. Very interesting that the average home in UK is 850 sq ft. They must think we're ridiculous over here. Not exactly the land of milk and honey, but certainly of greed and wanting more and bigger, which is just a vicious cycle that gets one nowhere. Emagineer ~ I'm sure your home is lovely and you are working with what you have to create it to be the sanctuary you need in your life. We all can't have bigger and better, or fancier, so we go with the flow of what we do have, creating our own unique living spaces. flgargoyle ~ Your mom's property sounds great! That's really cool. ~ You are so right about living with less being a bitter pill to swallow. It is NOT easy getting rid of stuff, although, the more you declutter, the easier it gets as you see the space around you grow. Scott ~ Can you buy a shed to put your toys in? Your property sounds large enough. You don't have a lot of toys by today's standards and I can understand your wanting to have them so that you and your sons can enjoy doing outdoor things together and that is GREAT! I have a push mower also, a simple one, that, gasp, does use gas, but I don't have a lot to mow these days. I also use an electric weed wacker, and an electric hedge trimmer. I have flowers beds, and garden areas, but at this age am not planting any more. I want to relax more and gardening does take time and effort. (I'll be 60 shortly and things are getting to me more that didn't a few years ago.) Gardening is my favorite hobby though. I work part-time, do my own house work and cook from scratch. I'm getting ready to plant seeds for some fall/winter/spring color. I'm trying to plant more perennials but annuals are great fill ins. I have weeds, as I'm not that gung-ho to get out there and keep everything weed free, especially in the summer heat and humidity that we have. I don't have the time for that. I do what I can to keep things at bay. Those blackberries of yours would be a problem that's for sure. Gardening for me is great therapy, physically, mentally and spiritually. I enjoy it. Living in a smaller place is an adjustment and I'm sure with time you will do fine. You will find different ideas that will work well for you and keep on refining them. The thing is, as with most things in life, is to 'try' not to stress and to relax and do what you can with what you have. Wishing you all lives that are 'living well' in your small homes.
