Just wanted remind people to start thinking about, looking around in their garden, and seeing what they might dig up for the 2nd annual 'Shovel Prune plant swap in the Portland area. We had a lot of fun last year. Hope you can make it. Here's some details---

Rain or shine, gardeners gather to share and exchange plants and knowledge with all. The Shovel Prune Plant Swap is hosted at Pleasant Valley Grade School. Then main parking lot is on Richey Road just north of Foster. The site offers parking, and a small breezeway area with restrooms.

THIS IS HOW IT WORKS: NO SALES, Only exchanges and freebies, please. Tailgating Encouraged. The format for the trade is like a tailgate party. Traders exchange expert gardening information as well as plant materials. In two hours all the deals are sealed. We have plenty of parking. Label your plants with botanical and common names, color, height, width, etc. if possible. Pictures are also great.

FREE STUFF: The last half hour (11:30-noon) you may be able to pick up some free stuff from gardeners if they are willing to give it away. Many gardeners generously share plants from the abundance of their gardens. This is an excellent way to begin your garden and an excellent way to thin out that giant patch of Shasta Daisies, etc.

WHAT IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO TRADE: Cookies and chocolate work like money at the Shovel Prune!

I missed it since I sold my house and had to move. However I bought a house with much LARGER garden - and would love to host a September Swap. (Am also Hosting a Medium Women's Clothing Swap - email me off list if interested in that one...) HAVE: For the Sept Swap I can take cuttings of a Prune Tree I've got that has 5 varieties grafted on. There will be a ton of Walnuts and Hazelnuts for those who want to harvest them. Cheyenne Privet Cuttings for a natural hedge. Wisteria and Honeysuckle cuttings, and variagated Buddelia. Also have MANY Radishes that have gone to seed - so you can take all you like - the flowers taste like radishes and are nice in salads, and as a garnish/seasoning for other dishes. WANT: Your extra Tomatoes, Peppers, and Zuchini - as my move prevented me from having a normal veggie garden! Berries and Fruit Tree Saplings, including Euro and Asian Pear, Apple, Fig, Grape, everbearing Strawberries, Blueberries, Kiwi and more. Any preferences for a Date? We can do this rain or shine as I have a long (covered) carport. Max Shuttle #22 stops at the house, on 105th & NE Shaver. We are trying to see what everyone wants. I have a few parks that we can meet in with pavilions and bbq facilities. We were looking at gloucester, camden or burlington county areas. Another idea was to meet at trees of joy in the allentown pa area. We are going to have guest speakers do a presentation on propegation methods, air layering and springtime pruning. All free of charge, and a chinese auction for plants and cuttings. trades and sales welcome. This is an opportunity to meet local fig growers and possibly learn a few tricks of the trade. We have a forum member that is a chef and will be cooking for all attendees. The date is still open as the speakers need to coordinate schedules but we are anticipating mid to end of April. Looking for ideas and interest.

I'm going-it was fun last year and Duane had some very nice and unusual plants that I was happy to get. Yes, I "shovel pruned" my Epimedium sulphureum, but that doesn't make it any less desirable. I have potted up a number of other things so that they will be well adjusted by Apr.: Hostas, variegated and blue-green; Carex "Toffee Twist"; Daylilies "Fairy Tale Pink", & "Canadian Border Patrol"; Aster "September Charm"; Bulbous Oat Grass; Solomon's Seal; Clematis "Hagley Hybrid" and "Mme. Le Coultre (Marie Boisselot)" and probably more.
