This annual neighborhood swap was Posted today on my little alert list. I went last year, and it was a good one. I really like the Hosts, Kat & Mike. Hope to see you there! Please see my list for anything you may want me to bring, or you can email your preferences, and also stop by most afternoons to pick up stuff when you are in NE Portland. Will update the list soon.

Hi everyone.
If you haven't heard, it's time for the 2nd Annual Brooklyn Plant Swap.
Sunday, April 23rd, 10am - 2pm
3522 SE 8th Ave., between Rhone & Rhine
Last year we had a terrific turn out. I think everyone was happy to get rid of unwanted plants and thrilled to take home some new & fresh ones.
Soooo, bring your divided and spreading, your too bigs, too pinks, or extra veggie starts. Please mark your plants clearly. Don't have plants to share? Bring pots, tools, seeds, books or a bag of potting soil.
Master Gardener Helen Hiczun will be on hand to answer all your gardening questions. Also, we'll have hand outs on propagation, dividing and water conservation.
Please feel free to call if you have questions. Spread the word, the more who participate, the more selection for everyone. Thanks & hope to see you there!

I'm going to try and make it...more for the social aspects this year...will have hellebore seedlings (H. x intermedia and H. corsicus), variegated Iris foetidus...will post more on my trade list later as I get them potted. E-mail me if you want any of these here. I'm not going to bring a vanfull of stuff as I've been known to do...but will pull together what I'm able.

This turned out to be a very rainy day and a small Swap - altho I know my hastily-dug stuff went to at least 6 households. Pistils Announcement Board says the next one is May 1 - please plan to come - rain OR shine! For the person who asked about Daphne Odorata - they have rooted plants - at $12 And I plan to take to them a big bag of cuttings - as I think they'll have better success at rooting that many of us...and prices are more than reasonable for the space, labor & trouble. I bought a neat Sambucus Nigra -also just $12. The Purple Black-leaves will look great in any part of a garden. Can't wait for it to grow! Here is a link that might be useful: Sambucus Nigra

I have quite a few perennials that I would like to give away to someone who would come get them. I just don't have time to pot them up and label them. I don't want anything in trade, I just hate to compost them but they've got to go making a new seating area. Many are not fancy though.... I have: Brunnera, plain green species Oriental fountain grass Hellebore seedlings, H. foetidus "stinking hellebore" Feverfew Rose campion Lamb's ears Sedum 'Autumn Joy' Squill asst white and blue Muscari, grape hyacinth, common blue one Lily of the Valley Viola odorata 'Lianne' a sweet violet cultivar Aquilegia, columbines, dark blue single flowers Unknown large growing yellow hardy waterlily

Hi 888, Basically a Host sets and publicizes a date, site/hours, and simply provides space for at least a dozen people to spread out their stuff. It's good to confirm that a few greenhouse gardeners can be there early, to ensure a range of good stuff. Tables are nice, but not necessary. Shade and watering cans (or hose), are nice - and the Host usually decides what to do with leftover stuff. For example, perhaps invite new homeowner neighbors to come the next day and take all thwey want, or Post a list here on GardenWeb, Craigs, or Donate all to a non-profit. Some ideas are in this Post, but you certainly can keep it simple. (One of the best Swaps I attend each Spring is advertised as a 1-hour Swap, with no food involved) http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/okgard/2004013529013835.html People with lists here may pre-arrange Trades, and try to early, with the pre-arranged, labelled, items. You can invite a Garden club to put a listing in their newsletter...perhaps the Fuscia people - but hey'll need to know all sorts of items are welcome. Several people on this GW list can help to publicize your Swap, and we often have our own email lists for this purpose. These people include OldHerb, NeonKatz, pdxJules and my new friends Lee and Ellen...who just started a monthly garden Club that includes frequent Member Swaps. Hi Milo! I lived near Portland Maine for a winter - and MAN! I don't know how you and all the poor plants and critters can survive that freezing weather. Why not come out to Portland (that's OREGON, son!) for a visit? The Pacific NW is an incredibly verdant place with lush colorful gardens - blooming 12 months a year - even tho we have 4 seasons. Don't try to do Seattle or Vancouver in the same trip - as the Portland area can keep you happy for a LOOOOOG time, rain or shine. For others who peek in at this thread - MAY 1 is another Plant SWAP at Pistils nursey. Same general info...and when you are in the Mississippi Ave neighborhood - look in the alley behind their fence - they set out freebie plants for others now and then. Often they are just dormant - but not pretty enuf to look saleable. Not all is labeled - so be cautious how you plant any mystery plants - and control seed or spread - Just In Case. Generally, quality nurseries like this only stock highly desirable non-invasive plants. But I picked up a pot that I think is HOPS - in the freebie alley spot - and will plant it to control possible enthusiastic root spread and 15' high climbing tendrils. (I'm hoping it shades my sunroom - from a big pot) Milo - free micro-brew and Classical Chinese Garden tour if you come out here by September! Bargain flights Boston (or from East Grenwich) to PDX - have done it many times.

I will be there, hopefully along with my mom. I went to it last year and had a great time, and got the most amazing bamboo. :) I don't know what exactly I will have but probably ajuga, euphorbia starts, a bronze fennel or two, maybe some dwarf bamboo and whatever my mom brings!
