Hi there! I had SO much fun at past Plant Swaps, that I figured I would try my own hand at having one. Therefore, I'm hosting the first annual NORTH PORTLAND PLANT SWAP!

Saturday, MAY 13th

10am - 2pm

7411 N Huron

(one block south of N Lombard in the University Park Neighborhood)

Come Share your gardenÂs bounty! Bring plants to share and trade with other gardeners. Meet other area gardeners and plant enthusiasts. Share knowledge and ideas! Build Community!

All plants welcome!

If you donÂt have plants to share, feel free to bring gardening tools,

books, and seeds!

And Please mark plants clearly for easy identification!

The 6th Annual North Portland Plant X-change is Saturday May 20, 2006. It is listed as only 10 - 11 am. The parking lot at 7215 N. Ivanhoe in the St. Johns neighborhood. Questions? Contact is Abby at 503-285-7621. I got the flyer delivered, but won't be in town : (

Missed your note, but I saw your Plant Swap sign on the way over and back to the Annual St John's Parade - so I missed it. It you have leftovers that you want gone - please bring them to the next Swap -
or offer them here.

Hope you had a good experience!
We still neeed a Fall Swap host in PDX, I think.

This is our TENTH ANNIVERSARY!! Wow, time really flies. The date for the Spring 2014 Plant Swap is April 26th. 10am SET UP STARTS and browse....11AM swap OFFICIALLY begins...immediately afterwards...LUNCH! Bring ALL your extra plants, if it grows, it will go! Including Houseplants! Also any garden related items, Hoses, Garden Art, Tools, Containers, Etc. We are having it at Park Circle in North Charleston, by the Gazebo. There are picnic tables, bathrooms and LOTS of room for kids to play and even more room for plants, parking and food. Pretty much everybody in Charleston is familiar with Park Circle....there are numerous ways to get to it, depending on which way you are coming. If you want or need directions, e-mail me, TheCitrusGuy@netzero.com I will get it and respond ASAP. The way we swap will be the basic Free For All. I will say go, everybody will grab ONE (1) plant and take it to their hiding area. After everybody has a plant, we repeat the process. Nice and Simple! We like to do a Pot Luck style picnic and encourage everybody to stick around and participate afterwards, if you so desire. There will be plates and napkins and such, Please bring your own drinks and a covered dish for as many as you can. The socializing is as much fun as the swap itself, please try to give yourself enough time to stay and enjoy yourself! If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. Happy Growing Folks!

Hi Milo! I lived near Portland Maine for a winter - and MAN! I don't know how you and all the poor plants and critters can survive that freezing weather. Why not come out to Portland (that's OREGON, son!) for a visit? The Pacific NW is an incredibly verdant place with lush colorful gardens - blooming 12 months a year - even tho we have 4 seasons. Don't try to do Seattle or Vancouver in the same trip - as the Portland area can keep you happy for a LOOOOOG time, rain or shine. For others who peek in at this thread - MAY 1 is another Plant SWAP at Pistils nursey. Same general info...and when you are in the Mississippi Ave neighborhood - look in the alley behind their fence - they set out freebie plants for others now and then. Often they are just dormant - but not pretty enuf to look saleable. Not all is labeled - so be cautious how you plant any mystery plants - and control seed or spread - Just In Case. Generally, quality nurseries like this only stock highly desirable non-invasive plants. But I picked up a pot that I think is HOPS - in the freebie alley spot - and will plant it to control possible enthusiastic root spread and 15' high climbing tendrils. (I'm hoping it shades my sunroom - from a big pot) Milo - free micro-brew and Classical Chinese Garden tour if you come out here by September! Bargain flights Boston (or from East Grenwich) to PDX - have done it many times.

I'm new to plant exchanges -- how does it work? Do you just show up with plants you have to swap? What if I see things I want but no one wants what I have, or the other way around... could someone explain the general procedure to me? Thanks!!

What exactly does a plant swap host do?

I have a huge driveway in SE Portland on a quiet street with plenty of room for parking...

Hi 888,

Basically a Host sets and publicizes a date, site/hours, and simply provides space for at least a dozen people to spread out their stuff. It's good to confirm that a few greenhouse gardeners can be there early, to ensure a range of good stuff. Tables are nice, but not necessary.

Shade and watering cans (or hose), are nice - and the Host usually decides what to do with leftover stuff. For example, perhaps invite new homeowner neighbors to come the next day and take all thwey want, or Post a list here on GardenWeb, Craigs, or Donate all to a non-profit.

Some ideas are in this Post, but you certainly can keep it simple. (One of the best Swaps I attend each Spring is advertised as a 1-hour Swap, with no food involved)

People with lists here may pre-arrange Trades, and try to early, with the pre-arranged, labelled, items.

You can invite a Garden club to put a listing in their newsletter...perhaps the Fuscia people - but hey'll need to know all sorts of items are welcome. Several people on this GW list can help to publicize your Swap, and we often have our own email lists for this purpose. These people include OldHerb, NeonKatz, pdxJules and my new friends Lee and Ellen...who just started a monthly garden Club that includes frequent Member Swaps. Saturday the 15th is the next outing and Swap if you want to join us.
