Comments (22)Really, I hadn't thought of it as beautifying the world, but I guess it definitely would. You're all so sweet with your comments. Remember Burma Shave? I don't really remember them, but they did it with lots of small signs along the highway. But with all the laws against and restrictions on everything and anything you might ever want to do even this probably isn't doable. Sherry Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreAdvertising in middle of list of Threads???
Comments (15)Well, there are about 8 of us posting here and more reading. If each of us, and all of you out there who are reading this thread and find ads in the wrong place, click on the link to the advertiser, click on their "concact" link and send them 10 messages, yes, 10, that will be 800 messages minimum they'll get telling them how much we dislike their ads in the middle of the forum lists and to move it to the side, top, or bottom. You can copy/paste and send the same message over and over. We have to see their message every time we read a post, so they can see ours. Perhaps they will see how annoying it is to a forum disrupted in this matter and have GW move it. The downside to this is that GW provides this forum free. They need the ads. If the ad people stop putting their ads here because we bomb them with emails, GW may not survive. So perphaps we should bomb GW so they get the message instead of the advertisers. Other forum are getting this ad in the middle too. I looked today. So GW lined up this advertising campaign well in advance to spring it on everyone at once. That means, if we organize an opposition to these ads, we need to post to the other Forums too so that they join the chorus of opposition and GW won't think it's just those crazies over at that Cactus/Succulent place doing weird things again, and count on the noise settling down after a couple of days. I checked some of the other forums and I didn't see any posts voicing how intrusive this form of advertising is yet. So, to make this annoying advertising techinque go away will probably be more work than it is worth, take more time than anyone is willing to spend, and will likely not result in what we want. GW needs/wants the money. So I think we should just suck it up. Penny (yes, I was a union organizer in a prior life)...See Moreselling: no sign in the yard?
Comments (30)"The area I live (Oak Park, IL) doesn't allow signs at all. I've always thought this was a crummy practice and (no offense to those of you out there) probably thought up by a realtor." Are any of the following Trustees Realtors? Should be easy for you to find out. (From this Realtor, their rationale does not make sense where I live, but maybe where you live) Trustees- Bode, Klem, Marshall, Philbin, Sokol and Fallon and President McClure Oak Park, IL. Village Code 13-2-3: REAL ESTATE FOR RENT AND FOR SALE SIGNS PROHIBITED: The President and Board of Trustees find as follows: A. That a prohibition of "For Sale" and "Sold" signs has been recommended by the Commission on Community Relations on the basis that said signs tend to encourage unfair housing practices and tend to defeat the purposes of the Village's Human Rights Program. B. That a prohibition of "For Rent" signs has been recommended by the Commission on Community Relations for the following reasons: 1. "For Rent" signs presently are used more frequently in areas that have a greater percentage of occupancy of minority residents. "For Rent" signs are seldom used in connection with buildings that have no minority occupants. The use of these signs therefore tends to "signal" that minorities may be more welcome in some areas of the Village than others and this tends to segregate areas contrary to the policy of the Village to maintain an integrated community. 2. A proliferation of "For Rent" signs encourages panic peddling and block busting. 3. "For Rent" signs may give an appearance of community instability when concentrated in a limited geographic area. 4. A proliferation of "For Rent" signs may infer that an area is less desirable than other areas. 5. A system of apartment management that refers tenants to the source of rentals will encourage greater professionalism in apartment management. It shall, therefore, be unlawful for any person to construct, place, maintain or install a "For Sale", "Sold" or "For Rent" sign on any property developed for residential use in the Village. The term "For Sale" sign shall include signs carrying the following or similar words: "Open House" or "Open for Inspection" and shall include any other devices placed on the property to indicate that the property is for sale. In the case of new construction of residential property or conversion of an existing structure to condominium use where a condominium declaration is recorded, a "For Sale" sign shall be permitted on the property until the property or condominium units are sold, but not to exceed one and a half (1 1/2) years after issuance of a certificate of occupancy for a new building or from the date the "For Sale" sign is posted in the case of a conversion. Comments (16)Ditto on the Maytag. My 5 yr old (which I do not consider to be old) dishwasher started leaking into the basement. Being that we are months into starting the kitchen I didn't want to replace it so I had someone come in to repair it. $235.00 later (I nearly fainted for I could buy a cheapy new one for just a little more money which would tide us over until the remodel) the repairman left and I started to do my first load of dishes - with five adults you can imagine how the dish/pan thing got way out of control... my son tells me that there is water coming through the floor in the basement... again! Repairman returns and notices a crack in the tub that he missed and rewrote the invoice for just the service call - if he hadn't I would have done something unpleasant to him. There shouldn't be a crack in the tub after only five years but I am on the hook because it is "so old"....See More- 11 years ago
