Blue Globe Thistle Seed Germination

Help! I so want to grow Blue Globe Thistle. I have seed, but I've never been able to get the seeds to germinate in 4 years. I read it needs to have light. I've tried pressing the seed into the soil and keeping it moist, but I'm not too good at it. Anybody able to germinate these little babies?

Yes, I have. They are a nuisance here but also huge biennial attractors for butterflies, so I grow them and love to tolerate.

One of the best ways to get these seeds to germinate is to winter sow them and you still have time! Look at the winter sowing forums for help there.

Also make sure your seed is fresh, it germinates better. If you need more contact me.

I have tall white phlox in bloom right now. I normally do not let them go to seed. If you like I will do so and save the seeds for you??? I don't know just how long that will be but if you can wait I can try to collect some seeds?

-wieslaw, yes, but a plant may be passive in one location of the globe and a pest or even invasive in another. I don't feel I exaggerated in the least. I'm simply reviewing my findings in my little part of the world and my experience has found Echinops to be pesky devil, lol. ;-) Perhaps the seedlings are easy to extricate in some soils, but in my rather hard packed tough soil they certainly aren't! Anyway, forewarned is forearmed and at least folks can know it does have the potential to become an annoyance... -Brenda, fantastic! What a gorgeous grouping. What variety of Eryngium is that? Is that 'Vera Jameson' Sedum at his feet? Lol! I had no clue they smelled so much like cat poop! I do have a couple plants that smell like skunk though. In the early days of their residence here (when I didn't know it was them making the stench) I really thought that a skunk must be living (or dying) around here! Lol. CMK

Just in case anyone else reads these comments: Echinops tienschanicum is totally hardy for me here in west central Minnesota. So, it is hardier than many books and websites say. They are large, imposing plants but extremely beautiful and very attractive to both humans and pollinators. The flower heads really are tennis ball sized on this Echinops, and are a gorgeous blue colour. This plant can reach 7 feet or more but is usually a bit shorter, though not much! I grew mine from seed and love these plants, since they are so huge and so very attractive to my pollinating insect friends in the garden. There are several different Echinops that people like to grow in their gardens, but this one is by far the tallest and has the largest flowers. Happy growing and gardening to all!

They are so pretty!...I wish the flowers lasted longer tho..pretty cool looking seed pods anyways :) So far I've been able to identify some Dwarf Plains Coreopsis, Blue Flax, and I think what are Black-eyed Susan's...have not seen any grasses germinating yet :( Vera
