which tablet

Shopping for a friend's 11yr old GD who wants a 10" tablet for less than $200. I'm considering the following & included an 8" also.

Asus Transformer Pad TF0310 10.1" 16GB

Toshiba Encore 2 10" Intel Atom 32GB

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8" KitKat

I use an iPad & am unfamiliar with other tabs. Your thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated. TY

My friend said that it must have the larger screen. I've decided against the Toshiba which has Windows 8.1 and the entry level Asus Transformers have too many negative reviews... So I'm now stretching beyond $200 to $219.99 for a refurbished Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1" Tablet 16GB
at Walmart. Hopefully, this will be satisfactory. Thanks for any thoughts.

You know my friend wanted a tablet just for email and games since her hubby hogs the Ipad and they don't have a computer at home anymore. She didn't want to spend for another Ipad. At Christmas she bought an emerson tablet for $50 at big lots I think it was. I had to help her set it up. It had the Google store and really was nice for the price. I got to play on it and it was quite peppy for the price. Also had a front and rear camera and memory card slot. Now it was only 7 inches but for the money I don't see why something like that wouldn't be good for a child to bang around on. Heck I was going to get one to just have an extra tablet for back up but they went fast. Mary

As I stated above, can be used with a keyboard dock that comes with a USB port which I did not purchase. No can do. The big lots here did have some type of reader or tablet about a month ago but it was not the lookbook it was some other brand I had looked it up but there was not much out there about it. The sylvania tablet is working really well. I still have to go buy a micro sd card so I can load it up with stuff, I do not own any of that type of card. It is pretty speedy at going online and surfing and watching youtube videos is very good and smooth not choppy but I do have high speed internet. I am impressed with it so far. Just wish it was a 10" but it has a lot of fonts and sizes.

no you do not have to use wifi only if you want to get online with the unit do you need wifi. However to have wifi all you would need is to get a wireless router and plug your internet connection into it and set up your own wifi, it is not something extra you pay for, if you have internet you can have wifi. The look book can be used as an ereader with out using wifi, that is only if you wish to get books directly from the kobo book site. However I would suggest going somewhere that does have free wifi and run it because there is a major update that it has to do right off and it has to be done through wifi so you could visit someone that has a wireless router or go to a restaurant that has a wifi hotspot and do that update then thats it. The lookbook does come with a cable that you can use to move stuff from the pc to the lookbook, I am not fond of that method and much prefer the SD card that way all your books are contained on the SD card and not in the unit, should you have to do a factory reset on the unit if the books are stored on it you would lose them, I put mine on one Sd card and can use that same Sd card in any of my units. Except the sylvania it takes the micro SD card. The Sd cards are so cheap now anyway, I just picked up an 8Gig one for around $8 on sale, so many places have them on sale. And if you happen to need one of the usb plug in memory card readers those I find all the time for $6. I have 3 in packages on my desk right now price was $6 so I picked some up for friends. The kobo website has an app that you can download and install on your pc so you can use that with the lookbook also. Now on the sylvania tablet you would really want to be able to have wifi access to use all of the features on it since it is very much like a mini computer you would need to get online with it. It also comes with the cable to connect it to the usb port on your pc that is pretty standard with all of them. I had to call several CVS stores to find the ones that had these. It is hit or miss but you can talk to a manager and ask them to give you a rain check and to try to get some at that store. to keep things from getting confused we are talking about 2 different items on this thread! The lookbook which is basically just an ereader but can connect by wifi to the kobo website to download books directly from there. The sylvania 7inch touch screen android tablet which is able to connect by wifi and do much of what you can do on your pc, you can surf, email, watch videos, listen to music etc. And it has the ereader apps included along with many others, and many more you can easily install some free some you would pay for. There are numerous brands of these little android tablets out there now, most are quite similar in what they do, this one was a good deal at the sale price. I also have the Pandigital Novel which I really like too, they are very similar in what you can do with them.

luis, here are a couple of options to think about: - At least for now, T-Mobile offers for tablets a data-only SIM and 200 MB of data free every month. That's not much data at all, but you could purchase more if you wanted to. The big caveat is if T-Mobile has adequate service at the assisted-living facility. Their network is getting better all the time, but coverage can be an issue outside of large metropolitan areas. - AT&T offers data-only pay-as-you-go plans. My wife uses a plan on her tablet that is something like $25 for 1 GB (or maybe 2 GB; the iPad isn't here at the moment). Use it all in a day? Buy another one. Otherwise you can refill up to 90 days after. - The T-Mobile option requires an unlocked tablet. So do some others. Nowadays, though, there's just no reason to buy a tablet locked to any carrier. - There are features on the tablet (whichever one you buy) which you can switch off to preserve data. Your mother probably will not need a Maps application polling periodically for updates. My wife and I each have smartphones and we've shut off "remote data" for hungry apps. For instance, we don't allow app-store purchases with cellular data; we wait till we're home on Wi-Fi for that. Both of us get by on less than 500 MB of cellular data per month. And that amount of data plus way more than enough talk and text for us costs us (together) $40 on Consumer Cellular. My wife's iPad is separate, but that's not much money per month for the times she wants to find something and she's not near Wi-Fi. Granted, that may not be an option for your mother, unless you visit once in a while and take her someplace with Wi-Fi. :-) But it is possible, with limitations. And some money.

Thanks, Mary. I understand what you're saying. She's a bright child and is in an advanced grade for reading. We're on hold right now since I didn't find any bargains over the weekend.

Have you checked on Ebay?

I just purchased a New Acer Iconia w3-810 (Windows 8.1) 64gb 8" Screen for $99.99 Shipped on Ebay. I know you said Windows 8.1 was out, but there are plenty on Ebay that are Android. My first Tablet was an Acer Iconia A500 32gb 10.1" Screen w/ Android 3.0 (upgraded to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich). I really like my Acer Iconia Android Tablet but was ready to try out Windows 8.1 on a Tablet (my 7yr. old Grandson has dibs on my Acer Iconia A500 Tablet). My first Acer Tablet is the reason I went with an Acer again (really good experience)!

I have Windows 8.1 on my Nokia 928 Smartphone and really like Windows 8.1 on it. If I don't like Windows 8.1 on my New Tablet I could always sell it, or maybe give the Win8.1 to my Grandson instead of the Android. He's pretty bright and would have no problem with it at all. Don't think I'm ready to have it on my Laptop or Desktop Computers yet unless I have a Touchscreen!

Anyway, my advice is to look on Ebay!

BTW, Acer does make a nice Tablet

Thanks, Bugs... I don't live in the same state as my friend and her GD. She has decided to let a local friend help her. The few purchases I've made from Ebay were a good experience.

I have had a Galaxy 3, 10.1 tab for some time and love it. It has 16GB, like the Galaxy 4 you are considering. Galaxy has a slot for an SD card, which expands the storage, and you can separately buy a short cable that plugs into the port used for charging the tab and takes a regular flash drive on the other end. I really like that feature, because it lets me load things from my computer onto the flash drive and then view them in my tab. No fear of running out of storage with an SD card and the ability to use as many flash drives as you want to carry around.

I will probably buy another Galaxy when I need a new tab.

I know my suggestion isn't per the parameters you said you wanted, but I just wanted to say that my niece and nephew, who are about that age, have the 7" Kindle Fire tablets and love them. I know they aren't as trendy or fancy as the 10" Apple ones, but they love them. You can buy a new HDX 7" for under $200 and the 8.9 inch is under $400.

My experience with tablets is limited to the Nexus 7, but I got it for free, so I have no idea how much it costs. I do think it's good and has handled anything I've thrown at it. I've treated it as a laptop, so it's had a dozen or more internet tabs up, taken pictures, and had a couple of games up, all at the same time and have had no issues with lag time or other problems.

Not that this really makes a difference, but when I was deciding between getting a Fire and Paperwhite from amazon, I bought both to play with. I opted for the paperwhite, because of my needs and dealing with amazon was so easy. They even said I could keep the charger I ordered for the Fire, but gave me my money back for it.
