My first Gritty Mix......need suggestions. (pic)
Comments (8)First, that's a pretty little seedling, good luck! The seedling has tiny shallow roots and the top layer of gritty mix does dry quickly, how are you checking the moisture level? I have no experience with seelings, but I do screen turface and granite at 1/16" through 3/8" (can probably use 1/4")....See MorePro Mix BX in GeoPots, did I do this correct?
Comments (10)Thanks to all for the advice thus far. However, it seems that in the process of gathering intel for a good growing medium, as a newbie I significantly misunderstood what was suggested to me in the weeks leading up to now. My goal was to keep things simple. I have very little time to do gardening work and I take advantage of every spare minute I have to that end. When I was asking around for a growing medium a couple of weeks ago, I was hoping I could find one that I wouldn't have to mix in ratios and one that was already rich in nutrients so all I would have to do is worry about watering. That was when I learned about Pro Mix BX. I even went the extra mile to find a local retailer of Pro Mix BX and fortunately within a few days I found one within 10 min of my house and bought 4 compressed bales at $28 a pop. After subsequently receiving my GeoPots in the mail, I thought I had everything I needed to start my containers. However, it seems that all I really had (based on the above responses) was two pieces of the puzzle. What it boils down to is that basically I have one growing mix ingredient and even that ingredient requires something to be added to it if it is to be used alone. Lets just say for argument's sake that I have no time to go back and re-fill those containers (which is actually a true statement) with a 5-1-1 mix or something like it. Am I destined to have a disappointing crop this year? I thought my biggest problem was going to be keeping the Pro Mix in the GeoPots moist considering they are fabric pots. Based on the responses above, it seems like I am going to have the opposite problem. I am not in a happy place right now. Could this end up being my biggest gardening mistake ever?...See MorePotting Mix correct?
Comments (10)I finally found pine bark mini nuggets but they don't look very 'mini' to me. Here is the mix that I made today - does it look right? It was very 'barky' is that normal? The mix is 3.5 buckets of pine bark, 1 bucket of BM1 potting mix, and about half a bucket of compost. I added a little compost because I wanted to get BM8 and it has compost in it but I all I could get was BM1 and it doesn't have any compost. When I pot the plants and water them, it seems that all is left is the bark; that is okay for hostas to grow in? Should I add some BM1 on the top? Confused, Potheads - please help!...See MoreHelp! Container potting mixes all disappointing...need suggestions
Comments (16)Hey Z, I started by mixing hundreds of gallons of 5-1-1 over the last 3 years and it's a pain. Now I use three things: Kelloggs Patio Plus, EB Stone Cactus and Promix (or Sunshine). Kelloggs with added pumice is 90% the performance of 5-1-1 with pretty much none of the hassle. It lasts for much longer than any other peat-based product. Also, Patio Plus is cheap, mostly because peat is more expensive than the bark used in Patio Plus. It holds a little more water than 5-1-1 but isn't nearly as retentive as Promix. I use Promix for seed starting or veggies like lettuce. Finally, EB Stone I use for all my cactus/succulents. Both Patio Plus and Promix can be found at Home Depot (at least in CA). For you, if you're growing outside on your balcony, I would say go Patio Plus. Patio Plus has "organic fertilizer" aka manure and it smells all kinds of funky. For indoors, I'd go EB Stone. Even though it's for cactus, it's still really solid mix that will last a long time. Blue Ribbon is great, but still peat-based. It will only last 6 months or so. But those six months the plants are happy. It's also "organic."...See Morebkay2000
