Hi Jillsp- I think you should be fine. Yes, the common rule of thumb is to determine the diameter or width of the table top and select a lighting piece that is half of that measurement (the diameter of the table top). Your fixture size should not be determined by the size of the room at all, but the size of the table it is over. If your chandelier is not too heavy, my advice is to have someone hold the light over the table while you take a step back and simply use your own judgment and decide if you like the way it looks. There are two schools of thought here because in general, design is about personal taste and opinion.

I like them both but I love the first one. I don't think it's too big. Although my home's decor is completely different my DR and the table are about the same size as yours. My fixture is 27 wide and looks proportionate to me. I would NOT go with blue beads. A bit of color theory: blue and orange are complementary colors and are directly opposite each other on the color wheel. While they do go with each other, complementary colors have the effect of making each look brighter! Blue next to orange will make the orange look even brighter. I would go with bead colors in the yellow family. They are close enough to orange to not look jarring, yet not add more orange. Ivory, yellow, soft gold, etc.

A simple way to determine a chandelier size is to add the dimensions of the room together in feet and then convert the answer to inches. The answer in inches should equal the diameter of the fixture. So if your room measures 10' x 14' the diameter of the fixture should be about 24" I would get the large
