Opinions, match can lighting trim to ceiling(white) or do a color

Never have done lighting, redoing the whole home. Husband wants brushed nickel everywhere, I assumed white so it would fade into the ceiling. He wants to do an oil rubbed bronze even in the master bath. He thinks the whites all look like cheap plastic, I don't see it. What's most typically done?

I have brushed nickel and blue glass in my kitchen to match the decor and have white in other areas. the white plastic does look cheap. I think it depends on the size of the can, height of the ceiling and overall decor. I don't think I would like brushed nickel in living areas and bedrooms where there is no other matching decor. I may try to paint my white plastic ones to match the ceiling more closely.

That is an interesting question. I have always read to use white can trims for ceilings and metal trimmed ones when installed in woodwork. However, if the white ones look cheap that would bug me too. Is there not an option to get decent looking white ones?

Thanks everybody for your input. The shaker cabinets are new -- so that's why I hesitate to paint them. True, the lighting in the kitchen isn't that great -- so perhaps it would be difficult for people to notice the difference. I would love, however, to change the hardware. Currently they are the tubular pulls which seem too contemporary for this pre-war apartment. I know I may have to paint the cabinets depending on the new hardware I select. If I can fill in the holes with wood filler and have it paint so it would be seamless, I'd leave it as it is. But not sure if that will happen. If I end up having to paint the cabinets, I figure might as well paint them the same color as the trim/moldings. Decorators White looks good in all of the rooms (with the exception of the master bedroom where colors are more muted) because the furniture tends to run on the fresh clean side.

I agree with applepieorder and RL Relocation as well. That whites do not always have to match totally. Secondly, I notice that you have window sills only (no other molding apparent on the windows. If you want to, you could paint just the sills as a diy project, but you know, I believe I agree with applepieorder that you don't HAVE to. I would enjoy your wood blinds like they are, and make that decision down the road.

If you don’t get that properly insulated, there goes all your conditioned air you spend so much money creating. Who on earth designed that to not have any insulation???? Paint is the least of your issues when you have structural insufficiencies and need the whole thing rebuilt.

If you like teal, go for it! :-) While your inspiration picture doesn't have white trim, usually trim (and doors) are painted white. The contrast will make the teal pop even more. However, it's easier to break rules in powder rooms because they're small rooms. Things that would be overwhelming on a large scale can be charming on a small scale. There is certainly a love on Houzz for intense statements in powder rooms.

There are other white ones, there are metal painted white that look nice to me, I think he just has it stuck in his head that white looks cheap. Thank you for confirming white is typically used in ceilings :)

Recessed lights like the CR6, RT6 come with an integrated white metal trim ring at a starting price < $20.

Of course if your ceilings are not painted white (or an off-white) than that would change my vote.
