avast antivirus problem

Hi,
I have Avast Antivirus software on my Dell Lattitude D630 Laptop. I tried to download a Gimp program and my software went into a freeze and the antivirus software will not open with the normal password I put in the password many times and it won't accept any password as the correct password even after it was changed!!!! Any ideas about what to do???

What software are you referring to ? It's not clear.

Are you saying Avast is responding to the Gimp download as something malicious ? It's not clear.

What about trying to reboot, then see if you can open Avast.

I use Avast and have never had to put a password in to open it. Are you talking about another program and you feel Avast is blocking it? Sorry, but I'm not clear on your questions either.

I had the exact same problem when I renewed my Avast subscription 3 days ago. It says "Missing runtime error" Or something like that. Went to Staples and they messed with it for over an hour and couldn't fix it. Finally took it to a friend who is a computer geek and as soon as I told him about installing the Avast, he knew what it was. It has something to do with the Firewall of the new Avast. He had to reset it to allow things to work. I know nothing about computers but maybe that's enough info to help you.

I would recommend Spyware Terminator. It integrates the ClamAV antivirus program and scans for both spyware and viruses. Spyware Terminator has realtime protection. I'm not sure I understand the problem, Gringo. Are you saying that the recovery partition/reserve is completely gone from your system? That it was accidentally removed/deleted? Off the top of my head here are a few of thoughts. > Perhaps the hard drive is failing. If that's the case...back up your system asap and get a new hard drive. > If the hard drive is OK...the only way I know to get the recovery partition back is to do a reinstall of your operating system...from scratch. If this is required...again...back up to a disk whatever you want of your existing system because a reinstall will return your system to what it was when it came out of the proverbial box. > You can try sfc. /scannow from Command Prompt as Administrator. It might help but I don't give much hope for it. However...the end result of this type of scan might give you an answer...or a clue...as to what's wrong and why it disappeared. If you get more facts...please post them. I doubt that this problem had anything to do with Avast but I wasn't looking over your shoulder over the last several days when you've been dealing with the Avast issue. Translation...I don't know what you did before you ran the Avast tool I posted.

If you've checked the things that could have an indirect effect by choking resources - ie, you don't have too many windows open at the same time, you've cleared cache and history in the browser, your hard drive isn't near capacity and has been recently cleaned up and defragged, then you may be stuck. An old version installation of something like an antivirus program is likely to be auto-updated with the periodic check for threat profiles, which should happen no less than weekly. Meaning, you're fighting a losing battle. The old version will likely get replaced with the first update. If you can't find happiness with Avast, it may be time for you to try a different security program. A recent thread in this forum had a link to an article containing independent ratings. Good luck.

The Avast software stopped my downloading anything from www.gimp.com. My computer froze and I tried to shut down Avast and it came up looking for a password. I haven't seen this before either. Now when I click on any Avast Icon on any part of my computer, there is a dialog box that asks for a password!! I have tried uninstalling the Avast software; I need a password to uninstall it!??? I think Avast sees Gimp as a "virus", but the password created for this account doesn't work on my computer. It does work on the other two computers. (But not my laptop.) I can't even update the Avast software, so it is of little use in the longrun!!! I called Avast and they say it works on 2 out of the 3 computers, so tough DoDo!!! To put it nicely!!! Thanks for the attempt at help! Any other ideas????? Ayn

Start in safe mode and open Command Prompt (admin) and run the command;
del %ProgramData%\Avast Software\Avast\aswResp.dat

maybe you'll get lucky, its a hidden file so if you want to browse to it to delete, you have to go to folder options in control panel and unhide system files probably

If you really did go to gimp.COM instead of gimp.ORG then Avast was right to try to stop you.

Gimp.com seems to be just a parked domain. However, unless you're blocking ads, you might possibly get an ad for a Gimp from a bad source.
