Which vacuum cleaner is best?
Comments (49)Well, this is my SAD saga regarding vacuum cleaners! I was married 50 years when my husband passed away last summer, so I have seen A LOT of vacuum cleaners! The one I remember very well is a Sears canister over 20 years ago that cost me at that time about $400.00. It was nothing but trouble. So bad, in fact, that it went in the trash. My Mom also purchased one and so did my best friend. Both of those shortly went in the trash, also. Then came the Hoover Dimension 1000 canister vacuum. I brought it with me in 1988 when we moved to a new location, where we still are now. And the Dimension 1000 still runs! That's nearly 30 years! But the hose desperately needs replacement (as the wiring runs through it to run the power head) but I doubt I can still get the parts. I should have replaced it at the time, when it cost $100.00, but I had no idea how these vacuums were going to go downhill. I have it all taped up with electrical tape, but I'm afraid to use it. So it's sitting in the basement. I still have an older Hoover Windtunnel upright with the "Dirt Finder" that actually works! The entire vacuum works well but it's extremely heavy to push. I found that with the newer ones, the "Dirt Finder" doesn't work--I was actually told that in a Hoover store--and the rest of the machine doesn't work, either. Again, I was told in a vacuum store that the newer Hoovers are no good. Well, that vacuum was sold in my last garage sale for $5.00 and I was glad to be rid of it. Now, to the present time...I purchased a Dyson DC 41 for $600.00 about three years ago and it just quit on me. I hemmed and hawed about what I should get to replace it and I wish I had seen this forum before making a purchase. Believe it or not, I bought another DC 41 because WHEN it worked, it was great! Fortunately, since it now is an older model, it was somewhat less expensive. Now I'm hoping I will have better luck with this one. I also decided it was time to replace my heavy, aging Hoover Windtunnel, and I purchased a Shark Rotator Powered Lift Away (the pet model) for upstairs because I love the ease in which I can get under the bed. This set me back about $350.00, which I didn't think was bad, because I LOVE this vacuum. And I have 7 cats in the house (yes, seven) so I'm glad I got the pet models in both. But I have it less than a month, so only time will tell. Had I seen this forum, I would have looked into the Tacony products, a Simplicity or Riccar. After all, I spent enough money that I could have considered one of those. And there is a vacuum store right up the road from me....See More'Impossible' to carpet without seaming + Lowes problems
Comments (7)Nope ..what they did is a disaster...but it saved you money.the cuts should have been 15 x 13-00 15 x 13-00 and a 15 x 4-00 approx. We normally add about 3 inches each to the bedroom cuts so they would be 13-03 each but thats irrelevant to this situation. the hallway...which you had better not been charged for would be about a 15 x4-00 (guessing) so they should have saved you about 60 sq ft of carpet..they let the carpet fly out to the hallway from both sides and then scabbed 2 pieces of waste between the 2 ending points creating 3 side seams. No Way..it was a measuring mistake and they need to find the same dye lot...back it off to the doorways and buy you a 4 ft piece and re seam it in. If they do not have the same dye lot..tell them you want a discount or you can force a total replacement...If the dye lot (same one) is not available to them ...there will be a slight shading difference at the doorway. Was it custom ordered or in stock? Believe me, what they did is not right...and it is an easy fix and I can not believe they are arguing with you at all. oh, wait ii is Lowes and they are not carpet people...learn from this as a good independent would know better than this. It isnt the end of the world for you though..it can be fixed pretty easily. Now the last question is..are you going to be willing to pay for the extra 4 feet (60 sq ft) That's cushion and carpet although they had enough waste for the cushion so tell them to scratch that. Also, the grief factor may nullify the charge for the extra 60 ft of carpet. But it is material that is needed so you have to let your conscious be your guide. we would never charge you for the new piece, but we would not make that mistake or I would be choking someone. It really is carpet 101 and the manager is either a dumb a** or is cahoots with the installer. Check your invoice and post how many sq ft of carpet they sold you. I am curious...They will make it right..it is a no brainier and they should not be arguing here. I would print this post and show it to the manager if they give you any shadow of being reluctance here. let me know what the sq footage they charge you for and then let me know how it turns out. Good Luck. Sorry about the grammar..but I get irked when I am writing this because they should just get out of the carpet business. Go to my3cents.com and read about Lowes..what a stinking joke...but hey, they know how to market themselves and they pay these managers good money too...hard to believe..See ya....See Morehelp me choose a vacuum?
Comments (36)I have a rainbow that is around 20 years old. It does not smell. If you are lucky enough to have a vac that actually lasts several years, you should have it professionally serviced/cleaned, if you cannot clean it yourself. Not only will you not have a problem with smelling, it's just like anything else - a car, a sewing machine, etc. and taking care of it will reward you. But, even though my rainbow is great and works well on hard or carpeted floor, with having all hard floors, I wanted something lighter and easier (not a canister, not tons of attachments, etc.) and bought a Dirt Devil 360° Reach Pro Bagless Stick Vacuum. It's kind of like a vacuum/dust mop combined. I use it most of the time and pull the Rainbow out for a deeper clean and when I want to use the attachments, etc....See MoreNeed help buying vacuum for Berber carpet, light cream
Comments (17)Thanks Graywings! I went with the Shark because it can be both upright and canister. With all the area rug and multiple surfaces and nooks and crannies, seems like I'll be using the smaller brushes more anyway. The Shark is somewhat heavy in the upright position and unwieldy to maneuver, although not THAT heavy and not impossible to maneuver. It's just my house is so crammed full of stuff to vacuum around! I can't complain that the vacuum is cheap plastic and then turn around and complain a sturdier one is too heavy so I have to pick my poison! Now I need to figure out how to deal with spots. I have one almost every week, and the spray cleaner I have isn't cutting it. Very worrisome, it leaves behind an area discolored and sticky feeling. Gonna have to look into a spot vac/wet vac too I think. Dad bought one so I might try his out first....See Morecat_mom
