Morton5 - About Your IKEA Installation
Comments (35)Thanks guys. The one thing I don't see done very often in IKEA installations is a 2" crown moulding with the cabinets to the ceiling. I know I will have to do a cleat??. I am worried about calculating the height correctly and getting the crown moulding to look level across the ceiling. My existing moulding looks level so maybe things are not too crooked in this 25 year old kitchen. It is interesting about the hanging rail on the base cabinets now. Not sure if I understand it or if I would want to attempt it. Thanks for the Scherr's recommendation. If I didn't have an IKEA in town I will probably lean toward them. I will probably use them for the doors. I just can't decide whether to paint them myself or not. I know their finish would be beautiful but it sure does add a lot to the cost. Comments (5)I'll see if I can explain it better: Instead of building the cab box as usual, I moved the cabinet bottom piece, up inside, just enough that it would hide the metal liner and then fastened the bottom to the cab sides. The metal liner is like an upside down cake pan when installed, and if I had attached it to the finished cabinet bottom, without recessing the bottom, it would have been completely visible... It's been awhile, but I *think* I had to drill new holes for the camlock system, to attach the pushed up bottom. The bottom has a large, square cut out that the blower intake rests over, and is covered with the grease screen. The blower will vent straight out the back wall, directly outside. I say *will* because I'm waiting until DH goes on a fishing trip to finally cut the vent hole. He's having a fit about me cutting an exterior wall hole *rolls eyes*...See MoreMounting Ikea Algot system questions
Comments (10)Hi folks. We just installed Algots throughout our whole house. The suspension rail is optional but very helpful. It has a small lip but supports a lot of weight. We followed some youtube advice and drilled additional holes in the suspension rail so they all landed on studs, then hung our verticals from the rail. The Algot system has three widths (15, 23, 32) so not likely that you would hit studs with all your verticals - without the suspension rail you're relying on drywall to hold the system. Having the suspension rail in the studs helped us feel secure. We followed this basic installation formula: 1. Measure studs, drill extra holes, hang suspension rail. 2. Hang verticals (do not attach to wall), and install shelves at the top and bottom of the system to square everything out. 3. Mark the holes for the verticals, then take everything down and attach anchors. 4. Screw the verticals into the anchors and install your shelves/rails/baskets. 5. Do a dance, you're done! Comments (6)Are the cabinet backs built as loadbearing components? Or is there a separate hanging rail dadoed into the sides? Framed or frameless? Brand? Different manufacturers have different construction and different best practices. However, any screwed directly to the wall need the load distributed as widely as possible. That’s a GRK. Just be certain of the actual cabinet construction so that you are using the loadbearing construction element to attach. Screwing through a back that isn’t loadbearing would be very dangerous. The screws also must go through the shims that are needed to get the cabinets level, plumb, and coplanar. If the shims are not done correctly, nothing is secure, or will stay level. That goes for the base cabinets as well as the wall ones. There are 6 dimensions to a box. Everything has to align in all 6 dimensions. Then be secured properly to each other and the wall so that they don’t shift....See More- 9 years ago
