That is So Cool. One of the closets can be accessed from two rooms; a house near me (1960ish) has one like that.

The bathrooms are awesome, odd, but awesome. Those shower doors!

Why did they make windows like that? My friend just moved into a house with bedroom windows like that, she's figuring out how to put covering on them. And it's an older style than you'd think: in Christmas in Connecticut, the house has such a window. (CiC is my SGG, IYKWIM)

MCM is not my favorite style, but I think that's a beautiful house and setting! I hope whoever buys it doesn't rip out all the beautiful flooring and tile. I especially love the aqua and yellow bathroom. I'm sure the small kitchen is a goner.

Oh, I LOVE it. I'm a MCM fan and this is a great example. I'd just give it a spit and polish and have that awesome stove professional painted and I'd move in. Although the jury is still out on that metal railing in the living room. That might have to go but I'd carefully store it for a future restoration if someone after me wanted it. The bathrooms are incredible. Thanks for sharing.

Can't say I have the urge to rave like the previous posts. My first thought was the designer/owner was a stone mason. Never have I seen so many different types of stone in one place--other than a stone show room. Bet they end up tearing it down.

bpathhome, that window style baffles me too. A quick internet search didn't turn up any info. Maybe it was just the MCM architectural equivalent to fins on cars: pointless, but far out design. Now you've put the bug in me to watch CiC -- gotta see that window!

I've seen the canted picture windows on occasion, and they've always been on a rancher or rambler of some sort. Generally I think this was really uncommon though.

I like it pretty much, except for the patchwork flagstone. I'd probably have to replace that with another stone if I could get that up. I'd like it better without the maroon and in a more ordered pattern like a Versailles pattern.

I'd have to removed the LR fence, too, and separate those rooms differently. I was in a house that had elaborate gates like this on a number of rooms and it was to keep dogs out.

It does have a lot of different stone/masonry going on. But it's definitely got some fabulous to it, as well. I'm not social enough to justify buying that place -- it begs for weekly cocktail parties and shindigs of all kinds! And at this point in my life, having downsized to about 1,500 square feet, I shudder at the idea of trying to furnish a large place like that.

I'm intrigued by the fireplace in the pool house. Did the owners convert it to a cooking area or does it somehow double as a kitchen/fireplace? It still has the humongous grate for logs, but you can see a cooktop to the left and a grill to the right. Love the tile floor and the terrace.

I love the patchwork slate floors. And I love the fieldstone fireplace in the FR. But the two don't work together well. Wonder how to better reconcile without ripping out beautiful stonework. Perhaps a darker mortar in the fireplace to quiet it down and splurge for a beautiful rug? I wonder if the slate extends into the LR. Is that pecky cypress in the FR? Not my fave.

The narrow sun room that overlooks the pool is an attractive space, not sure how functional it actually is. Also, those indoor planters are cool. I had an MCM house once that also had planters -- in places where nothing would grow, lol.

I don't like it either, but I'm not a fan of MCM even though that's when I grew up.

Those windows at an angle make me a little seasick just looking at them. I'd get rid of them first thing.

Awm, I'm with you on the floors, they are wonderful. I grew up in a 1956 house with multi-color slate in the front hall, but they were rectangles of various sizes so it wasn't crazy-quilt, and I liked that. The floor in our current 1964 "farmhouse" is crazy-quilt but all black slate, so not-so-crazy; I like it, too.

In the house you posted, one would put down a big rug, anyway, so the slate would be around the perimeter, I suppose. I like how it continues down the bedroom hallway, and continues out the sliding doors, all combining to visually widen that narrow hall. What a nice feeling that would be, to wake up in the morning and feel like you're walking outside to get your coffee.

I do NOT get the wrought iron completely blocking the living room, except to keep the kids out.

If the sink and DW were swapped, I'd find the kitchen very efficient. Is there a dining room somewhere?

Can you even get doorbell chimes like that anymore?

That home is not what would be defined as a MCM ranch. It's a mish mash of styles and although the 3.4 acres is spectacular, it's probably considered a tear down. There isn't a room that doesn't need to be completely reworked, and the biggest problem is the low ceilings through out.

It's MCM by process of elimination because it's really not anything else...but I would put this under the influence of Googie architecture with a bit of Hollywood Regency thrown in. This seems to be a Midwest expression of midcentury. Check out the time-capsules on Retro Renovation and compare the regional variations.

I like the canted window, but what kind of window treatment do you do for that? I think I'd be splurging on some electrochromic windows.

For the most part, I found the house delightfully groovy, especially the pool pavillion.

Just my opinion, but I don't like it at all. I see no personality or warmth or anything that hits any of my good buttons. I wouldn't even visit it on an open house.

Well, I'll respectfully quibble, bev27. It's mid-century contemporary, but with a Prairie influence (low slung horizontal lines, series of casement windows, massive hearth to anchor the room, the materials & colors used) rather than international influence (glass boxes) or the California atomic age contemporary that we think of when we think of MCM. I saw these types of homes in the midwest when I was growing up in the 60s, which is when I first fell in love with them. The wealthier class built similar houses in the posh section in my town. They were considered chic in their day, though even by the 60s they were no longer in vogue (and the wealthier class moved on to newer, more chic developments -- split levels & ranches with board & batten siding). I loved the tawny brick low-slung beauties as a kid, and love them now.

Anyway, I'd certainly classify it as a type of mid-century modern house. It's not of the mainstream Early American Fantasy school of design and it's not a massed produced box either.

My 1956 MCM in NOLA was similar, but not as large or luxurious. (And yes, the previous owner was a stone & tile dealer!)

Love the spaciousness. Not loving the bathroom color choices much. On the fence about living room /family room fence. Is it cool? Is it a little annoying? Maybe both?

Overall, yeah, Groovy is the word!

The blue with pink bathroom (#24) is spectacular. I would recreate that one completely, if possible.

The window treatments on the canted window would have been hung from the wall above the window just like any other treatment, and they would have backed off the sides of the window completely, probably and stacked on the wall on each side. It wouldn't need to be anything special.

Generally, I think this house shows that people used to have a little bit more fun than they do now. I wonder what all those beige bedrooms looked like before they were "neutralized for resale". There's a fair amount of "goofy" and some downright "ugly" going on here, and I think that's okay--in fact, I think it's good.

Would not do a thing to the bathrooms. Those are awesome. It looks like the kitchen cabinets are maybe steel? Love the bar and entertaining area.

I'd almost buy it just for the bathrooms (agree the pink and blue #24 is just wonderful.)

I was kind of disappointed in the visual impact of the kitchen, but I'll bet the original range (and refrigerator) were pink; that would make more sense with the pink tile backsplash and pink sink. When the original pink range died, they probably didn't have a wide choice of 40" ranges to fill the spot in the cabinetry.

DH and I have been discussing the fireplace in the pool house too. We think it could have been built this way from the start as a multi-purpose space. It could have been used both for wood fires (judging from the soot it was well-used) or for cooking on the grill and cooktop...just not simultaneously! Really interesting.

The iron railing in the LR would have to go, for me, and that crazy pattern floor would probably have to be changed. I agree it will be a tough sell, but I hope it's not a tear down.
