Any Log Home Kitchens out there?

Good Evening -

We're going to be starting a semi-remodel of the kitchen in our log home. We're keeping the same cabinets but getting new wood floors, solid surface counter tops, new apron front sink, dual gas range and an over the range microwave with new cupboards/shelving around it.

At the present our electric stove is built into a counter that crosses the room to create a U shaped kitchen but we will be moving the new range to an outside log wall and removing the counter to open up the kitchen.

I'm looking for ideas for a back splash on the log wall behind the gas range and under the new microwave. It is a true log wall so it's not a smooth surface. All of the pictures I see show a back splash on a sheet rock wall or some type of smooth surface, not a log wall. Do I even need to worry about it?

Any suggestions &/or pictures would be greatly appreciated!

HI, Shelby,
I am unable to offer suggestions as I am in somewhat the same position as you. Will be remodeling our log cabin kitchen and will need a backsplash as we are also removing a peninsula, where the electric stove currently resides, and placing an induction range on a log wall. So we will be looking for options for a backsplash, also against a true log wall. I will be curious to see what suggestions you receive.

We used a backsplash made out of the granite on the outside wall. On the inside wall which is flat we put a backsplash out of tile. We are going to tile the flat wall up higher to the top of the cabinets. I hope this helps.

KA, Elbal, dianalo, boxerpups, clueless and katsmah - thanks for all the nice messages!!! I am really happy with the new space - I just feel calm and peaceful when I look at it. My gf says that the only downside is my husband will not know when I am mad - can't slam the cupboards anymore with the soft close thingies. However, the old ones looked like I must have slammed them with an ax :) Clueless, the dead DW was the reason we needed a new kitchen. When it died we decided to get a built-in b/c the old one dug holes in the vinyl floor and sounded like a 747 landing in the kitchen. So then the counters and the vinyl needed replacing as well. And the sink was a mess from so many years hooked up to the dishwasher, so that had to go. And clearly no one in their right mind would re-do that kitchen and not replace the cupboards!! Boxer - I can't believe you remember the slate! That was my dream, along with the black quartz, but I am so pleased that after looking at all the pictures you posted I decided on the more natural colors instead. The bark color counter just fits with the whole cabin thing - and it has flecks in it that are the same color as the pine walls. Thanks for noticing the leaf hardware - I like it a lot! I will post the floor pictures and pinecone tile when it all goes in, I am still messing around with the lights, trying to recycle what we have but may replace one of the more Victorian-looking numbers that came with the house :) Thanks again for all the help and inspiration!

So my husband strikes again I'm afraid. The contractor put some natural wood around one side of the doorway that came very close to matching the other side. I was planning to just leave it natural, but while I was at work my husband told the contractor to stain it this dark color (I think this is revenge for not having the stained accent wall!). I don't hate the color but now I'm stuck with deciding how much of the original woodwork to stain so it doesn't look stupid. Do I just stain the inside of the doorway? I feel like it's one of those things that one you start, it's hard to know where to stop. I was thinking maybe stain the perimeter of the logs that the vertical beams go into? Any advice? Besides getting a good divorce attorney!

I agree with the above poster. If you can get those posts to work in your favor and become part of your decor rather than stick out by themselves, I would. I have them in my house and they weren't designed like the above picture, and they are a pain in my rear end! Could you do like the picture above and have the longer part of island stationary on that side, and still have your L shape but make it moveable, so a floating island so-to-speak? You could leave it attached to the long part of the L but doing kitchen prep, etc., move it to the center of the room or closer to your workspace and make it more functional? Just by the looks of your design, the L shape works, but then there's a pretty huge open space in the middle of the kitchen....unless of course you want to bite the bullet and get the best of both worlds....have your L stationary all the way around but make it deeper and better proportioned to the whole room (in which case, you'll need more than 3 feet of granite). If this is your forever home, I wouldn't skimp on that kitchen for one second to get it the way you want!

Thank you for the reply. I love your cabinets! Our gas range will be on our log wall and it is slightly curved so we can only go just so high with the solid surface counter back splash. There is nothing to really support the solid surface much higher than maybe 8 inches or so. I was hoping to find something to go from the top of the range to the bottom of the microwave above it.

pmaddogs - someone did suggest that we make a frame around backer board out of wood that could be scribe cut to match the curves of the logs and then tile or whatever inside that frame. So far that is the best suggestion I have heard of and we may give that a try. I'll post pictures if we do and let you know how it goes.

As you know, the log walls move so you can really only attach at the top or make adjustable attachments if you're actually attaching to the logs at the top and bottom which makes it even more complicated.

I don't know, maybe other log home owners either don't put stoves on log walls or don't worry about it :)
