Log Home Kitchen update

Hi all - just another note of thanks for the advice and encouragement a few months ago, especially boxerpups. We are almost done with our kitchen, just need to put in the floor and wait for the perfectly functional white appliances to die - which may be several years but I can't stand the idea of ditching them - it is an environment thing.

As you can see from the "old" pictures I keep stuff for a REALLY long time! When those old dark cabinets hit the light of day out in the driveway I could not believe how awful they looked....the new is just lovely in comparison :)

The boombox on the counter is recycled from my office - it replaces that huge old stereo that hogged half of the little counter I had - but I can't cook or clean without a radio!

The opening above the stove is for a 6x6 pinecone tile from Derby Pottery in New Orleans in a moss color - I will post a picture once it is in - ordering right before Mardi Gras delayed things a tiny bit - which I thought was a charming reason!

Those new cabs look nice and fresh...The counter too...

I love that you care about our Earth and consider it..very unselfish of you.

I think I heard music coming out of the boombox as I watched your slideshow...

I want to post a link to the Derby Pottery tile I chose - I really liked working with Mark Derby and love the tile at his place!

I should add that I ended up choosing Viatera Sapporo counters and Coronado Cream backsplash - cabinets are Yorktowne Hickory. My very favorite thing is the soft close feature and the trash drawer - I feel like I live in a castle!

Logcabinkitchen, thanks! The back wall of the backsplash does match the red loft wall. The red wood is actually reclaimed barnwood from a dismantled barn. I don't have any pictures posted on here but I can post a link to the photo bucket album. It's just a small vacation cabin we built, so it's on a much smaller scale then yours, but maybe you'll get a few ideas! Here is a link that might be useful: cabin photos

pmaddogs - someone did suggest that we make a frame around backer board out of wood that could be scribe cut to match the curves of the logs and then tile or whatever inside that frame. So far that is the best suggestion I have heard of and we may give that a try. I'll post pictures if we do and let you know how it goes. As you know, the log walls move so you can really only attach at the top or make adjustable attachments if you're actually attaching to the logs at the top and bottom which makes it even more complicated. I have a log-sided home and would love to see what you've got! But -- when you say "modern" -- what exactly do you mean by that? If you mean updating/re-decorating in line with the flavor of the home that's one thing, but if you mean sleek design/metal-glass-steel looks = no, no and a thousand times NO! Log homes are easy in the sense that they are telling you what they want to be.

@Angie W What colors do you like for a counter? Black, Beige, White? Quartz comes in almost any color or pattern. Have you taken a stained cabinet door and taken it to a slab yard? That's a great way to look at the quartz options to see which you might like. You might discover you want something more natural like Soapstone or granite or quartzite.

I think it is very pretty and keeps with the character of the space.

Pure Lovely. The hickory is divine. You must be so
excited. And I think your choice in counters turned out
super. The coronado cream looks so much better than
that rust/slate color you were thinking of a while back. I
think you made a proper choice for a stunning space.
I can not wait until you get the Pinecone Tile. And good
for you, you found a great tile guy. To me that is half
the battle finding good workers to create such a sweet
kitchen. Your hardware looks really nice too.

Everything looks so shiny and new and SMOOTH. Really nice "new" space! I have to admit that I was afraid you kept the dishwasher. Was that a Pot Scrubber by any chance? We have one and it does a good job but I'm pretty sure it's the loudest DW ever. DH begs me not to run it when he's home ;-) Thanks for the link to Derby Pottery, I may have found my BS. Enjoy your beautiful new kitchen.

KA, Elbal, dianalo, boxerpups, clueless and katsmah - thanks for all the nice messages!!! I am really happy with the new space - I just feel calm and peaceful when I look at it. My gf says that the only downside is my husband will not know when I am mad - can't slam the cupboards anymore with the soft close thingies. However, the old ones looked like I must have slammed them with an ax :)

Clueless, the dead DW was the reason we needed a new kitchen. When it died we decided to get a built-in b/c the old one dug holes in the vinyl floor and sounded like a 747 landing in the kitchen. So then the counters and the vinyl needed replacing as well. And the sink was a mess from so many years hooked up to the dishwasher, so that had to go. And clearly no one in their right mind would re-do that kitchen and not replace the cupboards!!

Boxer - I can't believe you remember the slate! That was my dream, along with the black quartz, but I am so pleased that after looking at all the pictures you posted I decided on the more natural colors instead. The bark color counter just fits with the whole cabin thing - and it has flecks in it that are the same color as the pine walls. Thanks for noticing the leaf hardware - I like it a lot!

I will post the floor pictures and pinecone tile when it all goes in, I am still messing around with the lights, trying to recycle what we have but may replace one of the more Victorian-looking numbers that came with the house :)

Your kitchen is charming!! Everything looks so nice and light and fresh! I'm looking forward to seeing that pinecone tile above your stove. Thank you, BTW, for posting that link--I love their tile! Enjoy!

Thanks flwrs! This is my first time really THINKING about something to do with the house - it is not my gift and when I first posted here it was with dread. I don't like change! But it turned out to be such a nice change that I am a little bit hooked on the process and find myself looking around at other rooms....hmmmm....
