I remember that photo spread from when I was a teen. The Grace Slick picture where she is holding her daughter China upside down sparked several weeks of outrage. Nice grasscloth on the walls, though.

David Crosby's father was Floyd Crosby, a respected Hollywood cinematographer. He did the cinematography for "High Noon," a great Fred Zinnemann movie & one of my all-time favorites.

daisyinga -- Paper bags! Duh...why didn't I think of that? That makes SO much sense! I am so glad I posted about this. I will DEFINITELY try that suggestion. Not to mention I still have a few rolls of that contractor-grade brown paper (y'know, the stuff they put down to walk on in your house, while they're doing finish work, so they don't scratch your floors) leftover from the renovation. That would be good too, it sounds like; and so easy to roll out! jmzms -- Thanks! :) I hope they do. Since I posted this and have gotten so many responses, I am starting to wonder if maybe the neighbors are, indeed, more "curious" than "disapproving" when they are doing the drive-bys. foxesearth -- I don't want it to be a big pile of rock...and I don't want it to be a southwest garden...I guess I don't really have any pictures (except in my mind) of how I want it to look. I guess I sort of jumped into it, when hubby and I finally decided that's what we wanted out there. At first, we just wanted something to not make the culvert look so...culvert-y...and also to keep the soil from eroding down into it. The rock garden idea sort of evolved from there. BTW, the pix I posted show more of the flagstone in the actual culvert part, and some of those are being removed in favor of more Tennessee Field Stone (the rock used throughout). There will probably still be some of the flag stone left (because it matches the path I'm building down through my foundation plantings), but it will be only in just the bottom of the culvert.

After 51 years of marriage I’m seriously considering divorcing my husband. Asking myself now why I’ve stayed so long in this marriage is difficult for me to answer. I had a horrendous and very abusive childhood, met my husband at 15, and married at 17. We had our daughter ten years into our marriage. I feel he took up wnere my parents left off. He’s stripped me of all my self-confidence, criticizes me everyday and is incapable of empathy. I had a brief affair when I was 50, and he was, as expected, very upset. He admitted to me that he’d spent our whole married life making me feel like I was worthless and unattractive because he was afraid if I discovered how beautiful I was, I’d leave him and find someone better!! I was stunned! How could he do that to me! I’d been such a good wife. I kept a lovely home and did EVERYTHING. He never lifted a finger to help me, plus I worked full-time outside the home. I literally gave everything of myself. Things changed after my short affair, but not for long. Things soon went back to “normal.” As he’s getting older, he’s getting extremely nasty verbally to me, and I’m reaching breaking point. I no longer want to be treated this way. Now I know my worth. I am NOT stupid, nor am I a plain Jane. Far from it. These past three years I’ve taken a long look at myself and I AM beautiful. Both inside and out. He IS very lucky to have me. It’s such a huge step to take as I approach 69, and scary, too. I guess I’ll have to weigh what’s better for me, taking this abuse for the rest of my life, or bite the bullet and start anew. At at times I wish I could just close my eyes and everything would have been done already. I guess I’m just leery of all the “stuff” that has to happen for me to be free. If I could avoid that in any way, I’d be gone today!!!

8ft ceiling 70s ranch home=no crown molding ?

My parents' house was built in early 70's, has original site-built dark oak cabinets with crown molding going all the way to ceiling. My mom just put in granite and tin backsplash a couple of years ago. Their ceilings are less than 8ft (7' 6" or 7' 9" I think?). I don't think there's a minimum ceiling height required for crown, though I think a maximum gap of 6" b/t the top of cabinets and the ceiling looks best if you're trying to bring the crown all the way to the ceiling. Any more, and you'd have a huge filler between the cabinet and the crown. With 8ft ceilings and "standard" 18" backsplash, you'd need 42" cabinets to go all the way to the ceiling. Crown would be less expensive. Something to think about. I agree that crown "finishes" the cabinets nicer than a factory (particleboard) edge, but if your cabinets go all the way to the ceiling then you don't need crown (though you might need a thin piece of some kind of trim to hide any gaps since your ceiling probably isn't flat). Do what you want, not what you think the trend is (I'm assuming you're not remodeling to sell).

These are great! Love the snakeskin boots on Elton's mom, the purple Zappa room, and that Eric Clapton and his mom share the same hairdo.

The Zappa home explains a few things! Love Grace Slick's mother's home, but what on earth was she doing to that baby? And doesn't Elton look so much like his dad?

Cool!

I'm struck by how fortunate people are to have a childhood home they can return to as an adult. I grew up moving; the upside is, you meet all types of folks in varying regions. But I still think having this kind of a long-term "base" is a special thing.

Fun to see where these artists came from, thanks for the post!

Frank Zappa's parents' room with its purple paint and art work was great, and the sofa was especially captivating.

The Zappas were looking to the MCM revival, though; they did not paint the stone on the fireplace!

I seem to recall Elton John's wallpaper in one of my brothers' rooms. And he got his footwear sense from his mum, dig those knee-highs!

Fascinating.. As someone mentioned in the article's comments, in some cases the artists might have financed new homes or remodels for their parents once they'd enjoyed success. But overall, the parents look like they're very much in their element. Heartwarming, interesting shots.

David Crosby's living room (or Floyd Crosby) I could instantly move into. I am such a sucker for big florals on chairs and I love all yellow-greens.

I claim to really like color but I can't picture personally living with the more colorful rooms - but I'd love to visit!

Donovan, my first pre-teen crush!

Did you notice the plastic cover on the chair in Richie Haven's home? I was in a house once that had them on the furniture and plastic runners on the carpet.
