Is this a good laptop (for 12yo) - price and spec wise?
Comments (27)So after much thought - we decided to talk to our daughter and let her know that we wanted to get her a laptop - but that we also have concerns about her use of technology - and that we would only do this with a contract. I'm going to be working on the contract for a while - and would welcome any ideas. So far, I know it will include that I have administrative control of the laptop - which will be used to update programs, run antivirus and antispyware - and generally ensure me that I have access (unlike her ipod which she changed her password on so I don't have access). It also includes that all technology (ipods, laptop, etc) will be in the parent's bedroom - from when it's time to get ready for bed - until after school the next day (or the next morning if there's no school). (not having it in the kitchen over night bc. she'll sneak down and get it if she's awake in the middle of the night. She won't sneak into our bedroom to get it.) This will prevent her from using it in the middle of the night (esp. tempting when her friend lives in Vietnam is is available to chat at those times) - and thinking she can have the laptop open in the bathroom while she's getting ready for bed. For now, I am not setting time limits - but will include that those could get added in the future if we think she's using it too much. The reason to not add it now is that she is using it a bit too much. BUT - that's bc. she loves her new Sims game - which is actually motivating her to do her homework as soon as she comes home. For the first time ever, I do not have to monitor her homework and keep asking her to do it (I still pay attention to what she's doing, but it's nice that the impetus to do it and stay organized is now coming from her). She's also coming out of a serious depression - and having some pretty terrific, responsible behavior - so any limits on amount of her free time spent on the computer - when she's meeting all her responsibilities - isn't as pressing for right now. She's also healing form a broken ankle - so in fairness to her, there's not as much active stuff she can do with her free time. ------------------------------- I have some questions about how to set up her computer so I have administrative control. I have that set up on my computer now - and she can use it as a guest. But if my computer is off - and restarts, she needs the password to get on. She doesn't have the password to my computer (which is how I want it). But I do want her to be able to log into her own computer without me giving her the administrator's password. Is there a way to do this? Set it up so she can start the computer and log in as a guest? Thanks. Lynn....See Morefavorite cabinet brands at different price points
Comments (47)I actually drive a Honda Fit and spent more on our cabinets than I did on the car. I hadn't considered it in those terms, but -- yes -- I will spend more on my cabinets than I did on my car. I've also heard that men are like automobiles. That Porsche is gorgeous and SO exciting, but the maintenance will be VERY high. That Taurus sedan is functional and ordinary and will never stand out in a crowd. A Suburban is highly functional and will last forever if maintained. I married a Suburban. I think my husband is a Jeep or a good, solid truck. He's solid as a rock, highly functional, can stand a little abuse, and will last a lifetime. Incidentally, that's one of our goals for the next two years: Buy him a Jeep as we head into retirement, a very real possibility being that he will never buy another vehicle. I drive an Audi Q5 - I lease it as I can't afford to buy one. You bring up a good point: A lot of people are leasing cars they couldn't afford to buy ... others are making payments that are probably beyond what's wise for their incomes. So how does this "game" work for those people? A person might have "Lexus taste" but a "Ford budget". In general, I think semi-custom is probably a good option -- not cheap but not horrendously expensive. You will have many, many options in a semi-custom line, including unusual sizes to fit your space, if needed, as well as better finishes, etc. I agree with you. I started with the idea that I'd go with Custom. My current cabinets are Custom, and they're pushing 50 years old. They really did last well for a lot of years. However, as I've become better informed, I've realized that Semi-Custom will give me 95% of what I wanted ... for not too much over half the price. My agreement with my husband: I'm allowed anything I want in this house, but I have to be sure it's good value. I probably send out a bunch of mixed signals. Currently driving a Hyundai Santa Fe, pre-owned. Previous car, Subaru Forrester, gave up the ghost alas at 184K miles. Unfortunately with my back, SUVs are the only comfortable vehicles. House: quartz counters, IKEA sleeper sofa. Cabinets, custom, but competitive price with standard big box cabs. Currently live in southwestern CT. Moving to rural MA. Clothing: whatever fits comfortably, I have no concept of style when it comes to garb. At any rate, i do high end very selectively, when I think something may call for it. So I would want to know price ranges. We are the same person....See MoreIs $500 sofa a good sofa?
Comments (30)@Sarah Much of the wood furniture in our house are pieces I ‘inherited’ (since they came from relatives who were still alive at the time, it was more of me being the sole person who expressed interest when the opportunity to get the furniture came up) some is over 40 years old, the newest is around 20 years old. Pretty much all will make it to the age where they will officially be considered antiques with my efforts to keep them cared for and clean. Upholstered furniture is slightly different in what to look for to get a long lived piece, and as many are featured in prominent areas (read: people see and use them a lot) it’s commonly these items we frequently want to replace/redo with something that suits the latest trends. The sofa with chaise that is in our main floor living room we bought in August 2017 (special order fabric so it wasn’t actually here until late September) wasn’t terribly expensive at around $700, but it fits the space and our 4 foster kiddos watch tv/play downstairs in the basement family room area that has the ‘wallhugger’ stationary back wood frame futon. The futon mattress is relatively inexpensive to replace, dark gray in color, so if it has to be replaced we’re totally fine with that! The sofa+chaise is a lovely sapphire blue, a nice place to seat guests and where the mister placed the GIANT fancy new tv (the only furnishing that he really wanted to pick out, was that tv - everything else he has put in my hands to decide on!) so he can watch it, and I can simultaneously cook while watching the news/whatever tv show I’m binge watching. Do I expect the sofa+chaise to eventually be a 100+ year old family heirloom? Of course not. But it will make it at least 8-10 years before I’m itching to replace it, and that’s okay. The mister isn’t creating a dented area in the shape of his butt on the thing even though he usually sits in exactly the same spot and the exact same position. So far there hasn’t been any stain-causing mishaps by anyone, all I can ask for really. :p...See MoreDoes a high quality inexpensive sofa even exist??
Comments (8)I doubt that it is considered high quality but I paid $1400 for my sofa about 4 years ago and am still very pleased with it. I have a kid and a husband who are both very hard on furniture, despite this, I have had no problems with the sofa. I purchased from Zgallerie....See Morenjmomma
