nailing 2x4s across ceiling joists in attic

I am trying to permanently fix nail pops in the 2nd floor bedrooms ceilings. My house is 20 years old, poorly constructed, and rickety.

My idea is to go into the attic and attach some 2x4s across the ceiling joists to reduce movement. Attic is built a bit like this:

(Though my attic also has a large beam running through center of the floor.)

Any problem with me doing this? I realize that I'll compress the insulation, but I can always throw more on top. I'm mostly concerned about causing problems elsewhere if I make the attic floor more rigid. Thanks.
