Deflated footballs

Does anybody have an opinion on the controversy surrounding the New England Patriots. I realize this team is not universally popular outside of NE but I am a huge fan. Several players live in my hometown which is fifteen minutes from Gillette Stadium. Please tell me it isn't true Tom.

There have been other cheating allegations and incidents involving the Patriots over the years.

There hasn't been a lot of uproar or outrage expressed across the league. Does that mean everyone does it, or that it's not a big deal and no one cares?

I'm from NE so although they're not my home team anymore,
I still root for them. Also, Brady grew up near here. A friend of mine knows his family very well.
That being said, yes, I think the balls were deflated on purpose.
If they were, then Brady has to be held culpable because no
equipment manager or ball boy would ever do it without orders.
I also believe there's no particular uproar because many qb's
adjust their balls out of the parameters required by rule.
At least there's something interesting to talk about in the 2 week break before the SB.
I still have to root for NE over Seattle.

Why not fill it w/Quickcrete? That's what I used when I filled the area between the two cardboard tubes to make the first garden column. Also put it in a gelatin mold to make concrete beads for the "Bead Pole". It's what I'll use to fill a jr. basketball to mosaic instead of a bowling ball. I used the kind w/rocks, but when it's unmolded, it comes out smooth as can be. On the basketball I AM wondering if I shouldn't dig a hole in the dirt to sit the ball so it'll hold it's shape????? Anyone ever tried this? I HAVE read that someone cut one in half, filled both halves, then mortared them back together, but that sounds like it would make a seam too noticeable.

Football- it is honestly so refreshing to see others as disinterested in the game as I am. I live in the Texas panhandle, essentially the birthplace of all the movies and TV shows based around "Friday Night Lights". You may think those shows/movies are exaggerations, but they aren't. NOTHING matters more around here than the local, (oftentimes Podunk) high school football team/s. It is nice to interact with others who are equally unobsesssed with the game. Schick- I'm not gonna lie, that fence is dreadful!!! Drywall screws?!?! Really?!?! What genius came up with that idea?? Remind me again what area of the country you are in? I keep hearing you say this is the best time for outside/attic work and I keep thinking you must be in the desert if it is that unbearable the rest of the year but your outside pics show green!! I'm confused! ;) CEF- don't worry, HGTV has been a guilty pleasure of ours since we got married. Like Doug, we don't have cable so we don't normally watch, but anytime we have stayed in a hotel or a hospital, we have had the channel on HGtv 24/7. We even joke that its a good thing we don't have cable b/c every time we watch those shows, we get inspired to DIY something!! If we actually had cable service, I'm certain our list would grow exponentially. Doug- I can totally relate to the mental imagery comment. There are only 3 rooms in my house that I can walk in to and NOTenvision my future plans/changes/remodels. They are the 2 kids bedrooms and the front/main bathroom. I walk in my bathroom, I invariably start envisioning the future and plan for it, my bedroom, the same. My LR, DR and kitchen all still need finishing details and/or cabinetry to make it work. My pantry, still needs shelving, counters and flooring. My mudroom/laundry room still needs the lockers and command center. The basement (900 sq ft) still needs to be framed up for 2 bedrooms plus a common area and the bathroom needs to be finished. As for me, our 1300 sq ft addition is, apparently a side job for the drywall crew so we are getting squeezed in around the "main jobs". They were here for a few hours Saturday, several hours Sunday, none yesterday and they showed up today around 5ish and worked until 10 or so. That is the living room area, they still need to finish hanging the rock in there and then the entire area needs taping and mudding. I'm glad we hired a crew to do it but at the same time I'm annoyed and almost ready to pick up a knife and some mud and just finish it myself. More than anything though, I'm ready to move away from the perpetual reno I've been living in for a year and a half. (Don't worry CEF, I KNOW you got me beat by a long shot in that area!!)

Annie, I've found there's a lot of differences between the wheatberries from different farms. If yours aren't working, you might try finding one with a tested for that crop higher protein level. These might not apply to you, but are some of the things I've learned for 100% whole wheat, home milled, bread: If you mill at home, and aren't looking for a sweet flavor, you don't need any sweetener. What the honey is for in a lot of recipes is hiding the bitterness that whole wheat flour develops when it sits awhile (weeks) and starts to go rancid. A little acid, besides dealing with the anti-nutrients, works as a dough conditioner and retards mold growth (if we leave an end long enough to mold it's the free flour on it where it starts, not the bread itself). Ascorbic acid is fairly easily found as vitamin C crystals. I figure a jar may last me forever. It does add a little complexity to the flavor, which you might notice as acidity, but won't taste sour like vinegar. Handling the risen dough as little as possible, helps keep the gluten from being cut. It does not like "drawing a tight cloak". Like that saying about teaching a pig to dance, drawing it around like that just annoys the bread--the gluten breaks rather than stretches. A better way to shape, if necessary, is by folding, lightly. Do your best not to degas because it may not reinflate. If you're willing, adding vital wheat gluten makes up for the deficiencies of the protein content of the wheat. Re hydration, I always do a soak. A soak is where you either make up the dough for a long rise (at least 8 hours), or just combine the flour and liquid and let that set for at least 8 hours. This can be done in or out of the fridge. It takes awhile for the wheat to hydrate and what seems too dry turns damp and sticky. Whole wheat also takes more hydration than white. The best proportion I've been able to find, and have been using, but haven't tested extensively enough to know for sure from my own hands is 5 tsp. water for every cup of whole wheat flour that you substitute for white flour. Also be careful of the rise. If it doubles, it's probably too far gone. Aim for half that (1.5 times the original bulk). Maybe a little more. I haven't found a lot of good recipes, but that's common to all of the ones I do have, and if I miss and it gets to double on the rise, I don't get any oven spring. Oh, and no double rises. It doesn't want to be punched down. I found this recipe in a surprising place when I was looking for a low cleanup (water saving) daily bread: http://www.instructables.com/id/100-Whole-Wheat-Crusty-No-Knead-Artisan-Bread/ It's a good recipe. I've been playing with it, adding in other grains, and mixing in seeds and all. Overdoing that can also interfere with the rise, but I've got it to where I like it, and I prefer the multigrain flavor. I don't know if any of that is helpful to you. I've been on the same journey for a year, and had some sourdough flats of my own. :) Great sympathy here!

Do I believe it? Yes, Do I think the players are in on it? Some of them, yes. Past that, unless the league takes a firm hand in it, it is going to continue. Do I think it would have made a difference in the outcome of that game? No.

That being said, I am not a Brady fan, never have been, so.........Go SEAHAWKS

Oh, I disagree that this needs to go to Hot Topics. Why can't we have a conversation here? The fact that people may disagree isn't a reason to send this to Hot Topics. Hopefully people here can "discuss" - rather than fight.

Lots of people care. As a New Englander, I feel that, if the Patriots cheated, they should be held accountable and "outed". If they didn't, or if it's an accepted practice, let's get on with things and focus on the Superbowl.

For those (not here, specifically, but in the world) who hate the Pats and are assuming them guilty because of that, c'mon. Same to those who love the Pats and are assuming them innocent because of that.

I agree with Suzieque. This isn't some volatile political brouhaha. People are passionate about their sports teams, but the world isn't going to change because of that.

I think it is pretty hard to believe that someone didn't do this when 11 out of 12 were deflated. It's unfortunate that they thought they needed to do this to win.

I give a lot of credit to the Colts player that called attention to it. The Patriots won by a big margin. Why did they need to cheat?

I do wonder if anything will come of it.

The other victims here are the Baltimore Ravens who had a pretty close game against the Patriots in the divisional playoff the previous week and who, it is rumored, tipped off the Colts to the under-inflated footballs.

I don't not watch football so there is no bias towards the a team. If they did do it, they should be eliminated from the Super Bowl IMO. Anything less and I lose all respect for the NFL. Anything less rewards cheaters. Yes, they could have easily won anyway, but that isn't the point. They have probably been doing it all season, thats why they need to be held accountable.

The owner of the Patriots and the NFL commissioner are close friends. Nothing is going to happen. But then, the NFL has shown it horrid "leadership" all season long. That's where there needs to be a change.

For once I am happy to see a winter snowstorm take over the news.

I am sickened by the idea that this topic has been the top or second story on news day after day. Are we so small-minded that THIS is *important*? Everything there is to say about this was said in the first five minutes after the story broke. Do we have to call in Elsa to Let It Go?

I'm with Chisue, on all the news programs and weekend shows, they talked about 2 psi under-inflation. Apparently this isn't the first time, AND they said that it really is neglible.

Has no one thought of the fact that *both* teams benefit......everyone who catches the ball? I don't get it.

The news only reports what people want to hear. Not everyone of course but enough people to keep their ratings high. Everyone has different interests and sports are a huge interest in this country.

Suzieque, it's unfortunate for the Patriots but their past actions regarding cheating have tainted how the world sees them. Piping noise in, stealing signals? They are seen as a dirty team to the rest of the world (the rest of the world that cares, that is)

I have learned a few things about football that I didn't know before this happened.

I didn't know that each quarterback picks out 12 balls to use during the game. Those balls are used by each respective team only. The only time an opposing player would touch their footballs would be by means of an interception. That is how the situation came about during the game with the Colts.

It seems crazy to me that the players should pick the footballs. Wouldn't all the balls be the same?

I also didn't know it had been suspected in the game against the Ravens.

While it isn't the most important thing going on in the world, I do think it is newsworthy. This is big business and a lot of people follow these teams. Nothing wrong with that.

Actually I just learned that each team even at the high school level brings their own balls. I guess this has happened for years. I think both the coach and the QB (and probably most of the players) knew about this. They said on the news tonight that the locker room attendant is a "person of interest." Seriously, how dumb do they think we are? The locker room attendant wouldn't act alone. It seems they always blame those in the lowest position. Go Seahawks - normally I don't root for the Seahawks but I do now!

Locker room attendant???? LOL LOL LOL. They really DO think the rest of us are IDIOTS. I'm annoyed more at that than I am by the deflation. It had to be Brady who passed the word. And, no.....nothing will be done about it. And this, too, will pass......

I have NFL mobile on my phone and get updates when anything significant happens. When I got that notification about the locker room attendant as a person of interest, my reaction was the same as yours Redcurls. They need a fall guy, and it's not going to be Brady. GO HAWKS!!!

And I don't mean the locker room attendant who
has been seen going into a small bathroom with
the balls. The whole world knows that he wouldn't
deflate balls without instructions from above.
Throwing him under the bus is just classless.
Although Seattle is our nemesis, I think I'm
actually going to root for them.
