I don't think I would want someone's dirty jeans on my countertop. Yuk.

Kind of reminds me of the kraft paper decoupage countertops that I saw on a couple of blogs. lol, HomeChef59, there's a current "Do you wash your jeans?" thread in the KT--seems some manufacturers recommend washing infrequently, or not at all. I hope the countertop manufacturer doesn't have the same recommendation. ;)

I do have marble and I sure don't think of it as high maintenance. Good grief -- with two teen boys who are VERY busy, a messy DH who also cooks, I cook, bake and we do preserving (tomatoes, berries, etc.) and we've got 4 pets in the house. Some time ago, I posted an analogy comparing marble to linen and denim. I wish I'd kept it handy, but the gist was that if you like linen -- even the way it wrinkles like no other fabric, with body and character, and you like your denim soft and worn, you may be a candidate for marble. If you can't wear linen or look in the mirror with it on and not feel the need to grab an iron and some starch and you take your jeans to the dry cleaners -- don't get marble, and you may not be happy with some granites I tested. My sealed marble has had most foods known to the average kitchen spilled or dripped on it -- a number of them, including chocolate, chili and tomato sauce, have been found the next morning. I do not have any stains and I have not had to use a poultice or take any extra measures. I will also tell you that while my house is only 20 years old, it has some of the character of an older home. I didn't want shiny granite in the kitchen. I much preferred the look of an old soda fountain, ice cream parlor or bakery counter. It doesn't look beat up or anything -- just soft, touchable and ready to work with me. Haven't regretted it a single minute. I only regret that it is not as unusual a choice as it was when I picked it. ;-)

Lisa brings up a good point about color usage: You can be a great gardener, as in grower of plants, or a great cook, and not have a great color sense. The clown barf pansies sound like "guy design" to me. The term is not a put down of male designers, many of whom are excellent. It's an acknowledgment that things that are appealing to non-designer guys (some of whom are female) can give the rest of us nightmares. And there are also the "differently-sighted". There are a few different versions of what eye conformation that alter color perception. People who don't see like the majority put together some things that look frightful to people who don't have the same perceptual rules.

I don't know how they do it, but it might be interesting to have the island lighter with the color of the cabinets painted over it, and than wiped off, to just see the dark highlights in streaks? BUT, if having the island darker is your preference as someone said, due to other wood in your home, than when you see the whole picture, and the appliances in play, you will see a different hue in all your surfaces. I don't encourage WHITE OR DARK in a kitchen. DARK is hard to keep the smears and dust off to look CLEAN. WHITE, is going to yellow with time and especially around the cooking appliance where fumes and grease go airborne. So your cabinets are the pERFECT color of a creamy yellow, not a naseous LEMON or an ORANGEy yellow. Light in a kitchen as yours will be very nice and the colors of the walls such as just the right warm taupe color or pale gray, or just the right dusty blue, or even dusty green-gray or gray-green, show you have versatile basics that will stand the test of time as soft good colors come and go, for window treatments and linens. I read somewhere that in paints, the most timeless choices that wear on one to 'live with' long term, lie in the 'dusty' shades family. I think there is some truth to that. Being there in person, you will be able to make the best judge, and you can always ask someone you trust to confirm your decision or guide you to an option you have not thought of, based on all the ideas you have seen here. It's great to have so many options!

I think it is soapstone. Maybe a stone expert can identify them. Soapstone scratches easily but is impervious to stains. Before oiled it looks like a soft powdery gray. Soapstone is great, think of worn denim jeans, they are comfortable to paint in, change tires and do any kind of greasy work but they are not going to look dressy. Soapstone has that lived in comfie look. If you do oil soapstone it may change the color in a dark black green or dark black color. The other idea is that they could be zinc. But I again one of the many stone gurus will have to chime in. Good luck and enjoy them. They will be lovely! some images oiled and now black

I think Paperstone has had denim and recycled money countertops. I think theyre cool and look better than the one linked above. Although im a metal gal.

I think it's cool, though I can't offhand think of a place I'd like to see it. More importantly, though, I have teens in the house: what's the address so I can send the outgrown...again...jeans?

Saw this under the "Most Recent Posts" and had to check it out. This looks absolutely ridiculous. I thought it would be pant legs oriented lengthwise rather than little bits and pieces of jeans all mashed together.

That's the stupidest looking thing I've ever seen. It reminds me of when I made seat covers out of old 501 Levi's in 1974 for our VW bug before my boyfriend (later husband), dog and I took a road trip to Mexico in August, the day Nixon resigned. Do not attempt a road trip in the desert without A/C in August. 120 degrees at 6 pm in Calexico.

Anyway, I'm not a seamstress and I made a paper pattern and pieced jeans together until I had enough. Fastened with tough string strung across the backs of the seats. They were seriously the coolest looking seat covers ever. But that was then. Not on my kitchen counter. That looks like total crap.

Here's the TorZo product used in a kitchen. It's not working for me, although I don't think it looks quite as upsetting from a distance. I think the idea is kind of creepy for food surfaces.

At least the decoupaged paper surfaces discussed in past threads weren't materials that had been worn out by contact with human skin...!

Perspective: Some of you sound like this product is simply old jeans stretched across countertops.

The article says they chop the jeans into bits, infuse the denim with acrylic, attach the resulting chips to backerboard, and then laminate it. It'd be rather like laminate countertops. Very plastic. Very easy to wipe up.

I don't care for the look myself (and I think it looks worse when shown in Mudhouse' picture), but it's not going to be un-washable.

No one's ever said they consider recycled glass countertops to be "dirty", though they are made from old beer bottles (and other types of bottles).

It is not like the fabric is on the surface, so I don't have any issue with that part of it. I don't love it in the kitchen photo, but I like it a lot here:

I think maybe the reference is to the fact that some of the denim pieces look dirty.

Personally, I think it's hideous, but it does make those other "resin pooled" countertops look lovely in comparison.
