Comments (8)It is really hard to make comparisons between whites based on pictures, so take this with a grain of salt--I thought that based on the manufacturer pics of the Luminesce seem "cooler" than the Torquay, and look correspondingly worse with the Canvas. I did some imaging, and couldn't find a counter I liked better than the torquay with your cabinet combination. There are lots of cream and light beige quartzes that I think look really good with the Canvas; the problem is that they don't look good with the slate (the slate seems to run cool). If you are set on the slate, I think their dove white would work better with it. If you prefer the canvas, maybe there's a different dark stain that would work better (Peppercorn?)....See MoreHelp with adding cabinets to gain more counter space
Comments (11)I'm not opposed to cook tops in islands or peninsulas but your set-up is really poor. There isn't any venting, at least none that I can see, and there isn't even close to the recommended counter on each side of the cook top (min of 12" on one side, 15" on the other) or behind it (9" minimum). And you've got a tall thing - the wall ovens - splitting up a decent run of counter between your sink and your cook top. No wonder you want to add more counter! Someone must have been drinking when they came up with this lay-out! Even if you're only going to be in this home for another 5 years and you likely will be the last owners, it would be a more pleasant 5 years if you had a more functional kitchen for a minimal investment. Are your cabinets modular units? If so, it may be possible, without too big a ding to the budget, to rework the lay-out using the existing cabinets, gaining a much more functional lay-out and your desired goal of more counter space. For instance, I'd take advantage of the wall jog and move the fridge to the deeper section of blank wall with the wall ovens to its right. You'd have room to add pantry cabs between them. This would give you a "wall of tall" with lots of storage and a more open feel to the sink side of your kitchen with more continuous stretches of counter. It would also allow you to move the cook top off the peninsula to the wall where the ovens currently are, giving you more counter between sink and cook top and the ability to add venting over the cook top. Doing the above would eliminate all the odd angles, which would make it less costly to redo the counters. It would also make installing new counters DIY friendly. If this is a possibility, provide us with room dimensions and sizes of the existing cabinetry and we'll help you come up with a better lay-out than what you currently have....See MoreCan I make this a seated counter top ? Comments (24)In the first plan, I do like the closet placement in the master, but both bedrooms limit furniture placement. The Second plan makes furniture placement more flexible. It is unfortunate that as you walk in from the front door, you see the kItchen before anything else; at least the first plan leads you through the labyrinth to a view out the windows. And in the second, entering from the garage forces you to walk around to the bedrooms. If you could combine the half-bath and full-bath, you could have the laundry also be a walk-through to the bedrooms (and I just love having circulation opportunities in a house)....See MoreColor suggestions for kitchen cupboards, counter tops and tile floor?
Comments (6)I think you will get good feedback if you post some pictures of the style and colours you like. Spend some time browsing kitchens here on Houzz and pick some that make you happy. Now, for your kitchen, I find the centre placement of the handles very dated. I hope when you are painting that you will remove those pulls and have the holes filled. I assume you are happy with your current layout since you are keeping it. Have you considered refacing your cabinets with new doors? I'm worried the arched tops are going to continue to make the room look dated even once you spend money to update other items. There are several companies that do refacing. You might look at Semi Handmade for profile ideas. If you chose this option, the bodies of the cabinets would be painted onsite but the new doors could be factory painted. You'll want to remove the wallpaper and also the heavy valance over the window and the wood valance too above the window. The room looks a bit dark in the pictures....so removing the heavy curtain will help bring some light in. You may also need/want to consider some new lighting. If you are going to get new counters then also get new backsplash. I know some folks have had success painting tile but I think it may be temporary success. I think you should start with counters. Go shopping and see the slabs in person (not always possible these days). When you find something that you like, then bring it home and start choosing your cupboard paint colour based on the counter. The last thing to be chosen will be backsplash. Wall paint colour will need to work with the cupboard colour and the counters, so it all has to tie together, starting with the least changeable element - the new counters. Please take the time to gather some inspiration pictures. It will help you narrow down your choices (solid colour counters, lots of pattern, small veining, large dramatic veining - all of these are out there waiting for you)....See Morevirginia lynn
