Scary Flooring Situation: Layers upon layers

Our house is a late 60's split level. The basement bedrooms have carpet, laid over carpet, laid over those vinyl (Asbestos?) tiles that lots of people used to have in basement floors.

The reason there is carpet over carpet is that when the installers came to put in 'new' carpet, they refused to remove the existing carpet because of the potentially asbestos tiles. So say the former owners of the home. We haven't unearthed the tile layer and had it tested for asbestos.

I'd like to replace the carpet in one of the bedrooms with wood. I'm not able to do any installation myself, so I will have to hire this job out.

I welcome any and all advice about what kind of floor to get/not get, how to hire a reliable installer, or anything else you'd like to warn me about.
