Santa Fe New Year's (lots of pics)

DH, DD and I ushered out the old year in Santa Fe yesterday. This is a beautiful town no matter what time of year it is, but especially so during the holidays. I took some pics as we strolled around and thought perhaps some of you might enjoy them.
We had a long, lazy lunch at one of our favorite restaurants, Tomasita's. Margaritas with chile rellenos (ray-EN-yos) and blue corn enchiladas was the perfect lunch to end 2014 with.

Santa Fe was especially festive, being decorated for the holiday and for our much loved governor, Susana Martinez's second term inauguration which was also yesterday. We'd forgotten that it was yesterday, and were initially surprised at all the people there for it.
Every so often, we enjoy wandering around Santa Fe's scenic Plaza, shopping, window shopping and people watching. Here's one particularly beautiful shop window right on The Plaza. Can you tell New Mexican's LOVE our turquoise?

I took this pic from The Plaza looking towards St. Francis Cathedral. That's one side of the famous La Fonda Hotel (The Inn at the End of the Santa Fe Trail) there on the right. It was an overcast day and we had snow again last night.

We wandered through La Fonda. It's interior is lovely and I always enjoy it's beautiful art and handcrafted furniture . There were many people wandering around in there, dressed in their finest for New Year's Eve and/or our governor's inauguration festivities. The historic St. Francis Cathedral (featured heavily in Willa Cather's classic, "Death Comes To The Archbishop). Our governor was going to be attending a special mass here before her (re)swearing in and the tv reporters were already gathering as I snapped this pic. They were just to the right out of the pic.

Mine were only potted. They faded to grayish white with red speckles. Since, the ones out front have suffered from mold/fungus issues with the leaves turning all sorts of red and brown. Small green offshoots have formed below the spent bloom cuts I made but they won't have enough time to make new flowers this year.

I meant "invisioned". I was doing a VISION STATEMENT for my church group & this came out like automatic writing. I am trying to find out if there is such a community that already exists, or if it's one I'm supposed to start. There was much more to the statement, but the essence is that the community is as self-sufficient as possible, & teaches values to the children & even the adults who have warped values. Some poor people don't get the same chances to know right from wrong because they are just trying to survive. Some people, myself included, have never owned a home. I would like to be part of a place where people respect one another & have common goals. I think learning to garden & live off the land will be a REAL ISSUE in the near future. I want to be part of the solution, not the problem. And "yes", I do want to impact people in the place where I'm living. I'm 65 years old, have raised my children, learned a little about life, & am ready for a way to impact this Earth in a good, healthy way. So....if anyone out there knows of such a place, let me know.

Hi Cactus Dude, I thought you just recently moved to Tucson from Albuquerque? Well, I understand your fears about your tender plants, and I wish Santa Fe were a bit milder than it is, although I do love the climate here overall. I will try to assuage your fears in any event... first, Santa Fe is really only one zone colder than many parts of Albuquerque (2,000 feet elevation difference corresponds to 10 degrees of temperature difference, the difference that 50 miles north makes is neglible). Yes, on record is some extreme cold, just as in Albuquerque, but don't believe anyone who tries to convince you that Santa Fe is colder than ZONE6. The AVERAGE annual minimum is certainly not colder than -10! Last winter for example, was a very cold winter here even for old-timers, and the lowest we reached (on two mornings) was -4. Otherwise the lowest I had seen here was -2. I would say that 0 degrees is the most appropriate design low temperature for lanscaping here in Santa Fe. Even many plants listed as being hardy to 10 degrees have been thriving here for years. Many of your more cold-hardy succulents and cacti will probably be fine outside with southern exposure and appropriate drainage. I have a beautiful cactus and succulent bed along a south wall of my house, with many species from the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts. I also grow a few more tender cacti (saguaro, peruvian cereus, orchid cactus) as well as numerous tropical fruits in an entryway sunroom. One more thing, don't worry about heating costs. A well designed greenhouse should certainly not need supplemental heat in Santa Fe! Even those plastic-covered hoop houses grow cool season crops throughout the winter with no supplemental heating. By well designed I mean that it should have enough insulation compared to glazing (the north wall needs no glass after all) as well as heat storage to hold the warmth of the day. If even a slight dip below 32 would spell disaster for your plants, (which I doubt) you can easily throw in a small electric heater for those rare cold AND cloudy times. Anyway, good luck with the relocation process!

Here a couple things to check: 1. Sometimes, the rod that you push/pull to clean out the ashes from the burnpot can get a little tough to move back & forth, because clinkers build up. Make sure that the plate in the bottom of your burnpot is fully closed and "seated", with the cleaning rod pushed all the way in. Even a little bit of space or air flowing through there might upset the vacuum switch, which will keep the pellets from feeding. 2. Unplug the stove. Make sure the snap discs are not tripped (push them in gently just to be sure). While you have the stove unplugged, go ahead and unplug your control box (the big, clear plastic box). Wait a minute or two, and then plug it back into the slot. 3. Plug your stove back in and see if it'll feed now. That's about the only troubleshooting that you can do as a homeowner (other than making sure your stove is clean and free of excess ash and clinkers). ~Most~ problems are caused by a bad control box. The dealer should have one in stock, since Quadrafire uses the same control boxes for many of their stoves. If he's coming out to check your stove, he'll probably swap out the control box.

I can't see the pics on my iPad, but our college friends who live here now lived in Santa Fe from 90-99. We visited I think in 95.....so pretty! They loved it there but a new job took them elsewhere. They loved Santa Fe....she would love to move back but said they probably couldn't afford it in retirement.

Since I've seen your pics for the last few years and a really good friend of mine has been going there the last couple of years, Santa Fe is definitely in my near future to go.

Love your pictures, Lynn! New Mexico is one of our favorite places, especially Santa Fe and its surroundings. I recall La Fonda so well, also dined in La Plazuela, and enjoyed exploring the public areas of the hotel. The silkscreen print over our fireplace is from a Canyon Road gallery; it's titled "Lamy, N.M." after Bishop Lamy. You are fortunate to live near this charming town. We'd like to visit at this time of year; the lights must be incredible.

And love the photo of your daughter, who looks like such a Southwestern girl!

Beautiful Lynn! And I also noticed the abundance of lumanarias along the walkways. When we lived back in IL, one of the money makers for our civic association was putting together a package of sand, white sandwich bags, and votives that each homeowner would purchase, and put out along their sidewalk on Christmas eve. If there were leftovers, we would use them at the homes of neighbors who were not going to be home. We liked to keep the 'gaps' filled in. It was something we looked forward to every year.
