We are going to a 50th bday party for DH's relative this Saturday in Mass.. My default gift is 50 instant lottery tickets and some Dom or Cristal.

Does Mass. sell instant lottery tickets? Where are they sold? How ugly are they?

Yes, they are available in MA, and are sold in convenience stores and supermarkets, among other places. Some places even have vending machines.

As for the esthetics, beauty is in the eye of the gambler.

Denise, your villosa looks like it has huge dark leaves! Pretty! I'm waiting for mine to decide to grow. I think it is reserving judgment as to whether or not it likes it here. Mike, how's the LED panel working out for that case? Any recent pics? My original terrarium is having issues. Mainly, it's those darn snails. Well, not exactly. I have these teeny tiny little pindot shiny black insects crawling around. They seem to appear en masse. At first I thought they were nothing, but now I believe they are juvenile bush snails. I can't say for certain, which is why I say not exactly, but I do notice things start looking crappy after they show up, and then I start seeing a snail or two. I'm pretty sure snails don't just pop up out of nowhere, they have to be baby snails first. They are not, however, in the terrarium in the pics above. GG, my terrariums (I have three) are in my room. The one pictured above is on top of my dresser. I used to put my makeup and such on top of my dresser, until I realized I always put my makeup on at my desk. And that terrarium needed a home. So up on the dresser it went. It is much easier to care for up there. It used to be on my floor, and that was a huge pain. It was also not set up at all when it was on the floor. Just a place to put some cuttings. I needed a place for my deflasked Aerangis modesta seedlings to graduate to, and this was perfect. (By the way, anyone grow Aerangis species orchids? Need an Aerangis modesta? I have 20!) Anteater was my first strep. I had a bunch, and then got super busy with work and lost them all. I loved Anteater though, so last year, I got myself a new one. This one took a loooong time to get going, and I actually thought I'd lose this one, but it came back, and is doing alright.

Thanks for the additional info and advice to stay away from b&b. Is that an across the board recommendation for trees or just specialty conifers? I just bought Picea glauca 'Pendula' from my local nursery in the smallest size they had which was a #6 pot. Love all the wonderful and unusual shapes and textures in the conifer cultivars but I have had pounded in my brain to vary the species I plant lest some blight/insect takes down all my trees. Which is hard to do for evergreens in zone 5a heavy clay, neutral to slightly alkaline soil. I have loads of the ubiquitous Picea pungens 'Glauca' planted by the previous owner. Also, a line of what I believe is Pinus strobus but should probably post a pic for someone with more skill to ID. As evidenced above, not my strong suit!

So there is no way to put something in them to stop them from filling up with white plastic pebbles from my self cleaning cat box? It looks really bad... I was contemplating putting clear caulk in there... That's disappointing to hear that Bellawood is low quality. It was one of the most expensive ones in the store I got it at. For future reference, what are some higher quality brands? Can they not be found at a place like Lumber Liquidators? Should I have stayed away from prefinished floors? Kind of wish I could just refinish them to fix the places that are damaged. I wish the contractor had recommended replacing the subfloor, but he probably should have used a leveler on top of the existing subfloor even if he wasn't planning on replacing it. One of the things I am most unsatisfied with about the job. Frustrating to gut your entire apartment and then still have unlevel floors...

Here's a random observation for the morning...I only took 2 cuttings this fall to try and root over the winter and both appear to have taken. After reading one of the other threads about biochar I took a handful of small chunks of burnt pine from the fireplace and mixed that into the soil when I planted them. That is the only new difference from all my other failed cuttings (I do not have a good success rate! These are #4 and #5 out of hundreds of attempts). It may or may not be what made them both work, but I thought it was interesting to note.

Yes, and you can find them at almost any convenience store. I haven't seen one up close in a long time, but they have soooo many different ones, I'm sure you could find one that matches the recipient's style! Or decor...

Son and DIL gave the whole family lottery tickets for Christmas one year and we sat and scratched. It was a dud. Is the idea to give a gift to the schools instead of the family?

I took a hostess gift to a friend hosting a cookie baking party last month-- I had a selection of local, artisan spices and last minute, I picked up 5 "Cookie Dough" instant tickets to add to the package. All duds lol.. but wouldnt it have been fun had we had a winner?!

One of my siblings gives powerball tickets in Christmas cards-- never had a winner there either but I think the gift of chance is kind of fun. I don't buy lottery tickets otherwise so I guess it's a novelty.

The idea is that lottery tickets are kind of a cheap thrill for most people. Plus, it's almost offensive to get something valuable for a grown man, KWIM? Like what would you get him? It almost has to be gag like or sentimental. His gift already includes a sentimental framed photo.

As far as being duds, yup probably. Come to think of it, I think I would be very upset if they had a huge winning. I am way too immature to be gracious about that. I may need to rethink this!

The first few years my sister gave lottery tickets, she made a big production of having everyone sign a doc stating that winnings over a certain amount must be shared-- handing out special pens and not giving the ticket gifts until the "official" doc (with seal) had been signed. It really added to the fun. I think it was an exceptionally big pot that sparked the first gifts but we've been getting them for years now.
